how often to train

We have taken quite a bit of time off from our herding training but Mady's recent success and great videos have made me think that we should take Bella back to do some herding. So I was wondering .....how often are you training and how long did it take everyone to make some strides???? If I remember right Mady has been training for about a year and looked great and so in control of herself. Does she go once a week and for how long at each session???? I saw a video where one OES had things on his legs and wasn't sure what that was about either.

Was it possibly tall boots the dog had on? Many people who are showing in conformation but still want to go herding use them to preserve coat.

As far as frequency, it varies so much. Starting out with a beginner dog and lots of learning needed, every week would be a bare minimum. Otherwise they tend to get way too wound up and also never make that much progress. A calmer dog may be ok w/ less often, but not most. And a hesitant dog need it often too to build confidence.

Once they have the skills and are solid (like at least a year for most dogs) it is more like refreshers.
We've been going once per week for Mady, starting in May. We missed the odd week here and there. So it's only been 4 months really with maybe 14 sessions, and she's coming along well. Of course, Mady is born knowing what to do, most of the mistakes and mess ups are my fault  It would be great to do twice a week, but it's a lot to fit into a busy schedule, considering it's an hour drive each way to the farm.
