Grooming my 1year old

Hello everyone hope everying is doing well

I have been struggleing to get my dillon un-matted :( have tryed meny combs/brushes with no succsess ... untill now went to pets@home and they have a new comb (special one) witch is made to remove matts and lose hair....

It works but my god i get ALOT of hair out from him , im worried if this is safe or not. it doesnt seem to be pulling the hair out and he lets me do it (witch he normaley dont) so it cant be hurting him. i just wonderd if its safe/good for him/his coat???

The "tool" is called Furminator ??

The furminator is a very popular grooming tool here in the States. It does get out alot of hair, but the hair it removes is superficial. Meaning, you are not actually brushing down to the skin and if you have mats, unfortunately, the mats are close to the skin.

Unless you plan to show, I don't see any problem with getting the dead hair out with a furminator but will wait for other experts to chirp in...

Meanwhile, check out the essay on line grooming so you can learn how to brush correctly. The mats can really become bad - like a woven rug that hurts the dog - if you don't keep up with the grooming at one year old...

Welcome to the wonderful land of sheepie grooming :D
No, don't use that on an Old English Sheepdog. That tool is meant for dogs that have shedding undercoats and aid in pulling out the dead fur. OES don't have undercoats like that so using a furminator forcibly tears out (non-dead) hunks of hair. It likely isn't very comfortable for the dog and you'll wind up with a very uneven coat. You can strip out the undercoat using a tool like a Mars rake (http://hppets.com/shopsite_sc/product46.html) and that will just help thin out the undercoat gently and make overall grooming a lot easier. One thing is though, once you start removing undercoat, you really have keep doing it diligently because as the hair grows back, it can sometimes actually make matting worse again.
This is the kind of "Dog" (Ritz) you use a furminator on. It works great for Ritz since he blows his coat twice a yr and sheds an incredible amount inbetween that.

I would never ever ever use it on Lily (oes). I have a dematting comb that the metal comb bristles rotate and I only use it on her matts. It doesn't tear out her coat and for the rest of her fur I use a pin brush.
Thanks for commenting , cant belive pets@home solf me that when its no good for my dillon :(

can anyone reccomend any decent grooming tools !! iv tryed meny with no susscess , shame about the furminator seemed to of really worked too :(
In you grooming kit you need..
Pin brush - not with balls on the end
Slicker brush - les pooches are very good
Matt breaker - looks like 5 hooked razor blades for breaking matta down, then removed with slicker or fine comb
Coat king - for removing under coat, only to be used if not showing, only use in the direction on the hair
Combs - course, medium and fine
Dematting solution - cowboy magic detangular and shine is my favorite
If you use a whitening shampoo then leave on 5-10 minsand if not showing, condition after
Scissors but thats a different topic
Good luck and remember were all here and either going through it or been there. Any problems just ask x

Hi thanks for this!! sorry to be a pain have you pictures/links of the items as im still on a big big learning curv and want the best for my oesd!!!

you say i need a "coat king" for under coat but someone eles says oesd dont have undercoats ??? just abit confused.
OES are double coated, but it's not the same kind as most other breeds.
GSDs, malamutes, akita, and even some breeds like bassets, etc. have the double coat with an undercoat sheds out (blows coat) twice a year.
OES keep the undercoat all the time, except during their coat transitions (puppy to jr coat, jr to adult coat).

So using a furminator is not a good thing.
It's made to help remove the dead and loose undercoat of the shedding breeds, not rip out attached undercoat in your OES. :(
Can someone post a picture of an OES's undercoat...would help a newbie.I do not have a picture or I would post it.
Thank you,
Robin
Tock the Furminator back and got some brushes that would said earleyer :)
