OES and barking (or lack of)

This is just a question and by no means a complaint!

The OES I rescued back in May, Dexter, is doing wonderful. I love him to pieces. My question is, is it in the breed to not bark often, or did I just luck out? I have never met a dog who does not bark....at anything.

When I take him on walks, he is always friendly, and when he sees another dog from afar, he looks and takes interest, but never barks. When he is in the backyard and sees people walk by the fence, he will run over and check it out, but not bark. I live in a townhouse, and my neighbors remarked how during the day when I am at work, they never hear him bark, which I am very thankful for and take that as a compliment. When we play, he does not bark and he won't even play growl when we do tug of war.

I have only heard him bark once, and it was when I was teasing him, playing keep away with his "baby". It shook the house!

While I am not complaining, I just find it unnatural for a dog never to bark! I guess if someone tries to break in during the night I can't expect him to be a guard dog...he will just lick them to death. LOL.

This dog hasn't one mean bone in his body, which I love about him, but he is so friendly and goofy, I wonder if he would actually try and protect me at all? (that is not the reason I have him of course, but still I wonder).

My prior dog, a Boston Terrier that I had for 13 yrs, may have been a little guy, but he would have gone down fighting for sure! Dexter just goes down when you rub his belly!

Either way, I love him, but I just wanted to see if its a breed thing, or if it's just my dog, lol.

Our Bentley typically didn't bark unless he was 'guarding' something. Zoey would bark if the wind changed direction when Bentley was around. After Bentley's passing, she calmed down into his role. Caitlyn, well, she's a puppy and barks for no real reason.

I'd take what you have as a gift. He'll bark when he needs to and that's great.

He'll bark when it's important. And yes, he'll protect you. Rule of thumb is OES won't start an incident but they will take a stand & let the others know they are serious. I had 1 that happened to bark more than normal. But she was a very high energy, dominant bitch. Wonderful to train with & compete with as she had a great need to excel. All my others have been ones that bark only when it was really necessary.
I will surely take it as a gift! He is just the most silent dog I have ever met.

Oh and he also a stealth mover! I guess it just surprises me due to his size...I never knew 90 lb could be so quiet! Like when I am getting dressed in the morning, or when I am in the shower, I come out and he is laying right there and I didn't even hear him come in the room! One time when my mom was visiting, she went down to the basement to do laundry. As she was bending over to get stuff out of the dryer, BOOP there was a nose in her behind! He was standing right behind her the whole time.

I do enjoy the fact that I am now the person at the dog park with the big dopey dog who gets along with every one! My other doggie was so aggressive towards other dogs that I could not take him to the park. I was so impressed at the park one day, a particular dog half his size kept trying to mount him ( I know its a dominance thing). Dexter never once growled or showed aggression, he would just either walk away, or sit down so the dog would slide off. He is such a good dog, I can't believe he is a rescue!

I LOVE MY SHEEPIE!
I've had 3 sheepdogs before Teddy and none were big barkers. Only would bark when necessary.

None of the 3 we have had were barkers unless it was worth barking at; if they barked I went to investigate.

Dexter is just finding his bark and defender role so alerts to odd things such as the ice maker, etc. He now acts vicious when the doorbell rings but always finds his new best friend on the other side of the door. He does not join neighbordogs when they bark, often gets a judgmental look and posture.

Lately he has gone to the door or window a time or 2 a night and growled, low and menacing, which is a little unsettling. We have a periodic armadillo visitor and I think he is warning him to not come back. He has been outside twice while the armadillo was in the yard and didn't even notice him. They are not barkers but also not the most aware of their surroundings. We like to say he is focused. :)
Of the 8 OES I've had only 2 were barkers, Daisy could make you crazy. Zachary has recently taken over where Daisy left off  The others only barked if there was a reason.
i have never had any of my oes barkers until my dreamer boy, so be thankful.. he sounds like a sweetheart thanks for rescuing him
I think I am one of the few people with a mix. Chowder is by no means a "barker" but she definitely barks. She barks when something is out of place. A book fell off the bookshelf and no one picked it up or her waterbowl is empty and it should be full of course. She also barks when she wants to play and the other small living thing, be it animal or child, isn't playing with her. Living with two roomies, another dog, and a hedgehog, and sharing a yard with a family we get barks a good amount but they all have "meaning", at least to her, and they are not all the time.
Be grateful, they have huge barks! None of mine have been big barkers....OK, Jack is vocal. :(
Lily isn't a barker but she barks. If she barks at something outside, there is something out there but it usually only is one bark. (thats usually her deep bark)
She has a play bark too but she only usually uses it with my fiance. She yips at him to play with her. He is the only person she does this to but she gets really growly with other dogs when she plays.
She also howls with our wolf hybrid. I gotta get it on video its too cute. :aww: :aww:
Other than that she is a generally quiet dog. Huh I guess theres a reason for her to make noise, she doesn't just bark to bark.
Get down on your knee's and kiss their paws.

I have a BARKER!!!! He barks at anything and nothing. He lives to bark at my other dog.
Kirby is very quiet also.
However, if something is a miss in the neighbor he will let us know. I do think he would protect if need be, but he is watchful and silent most of the time. Sometime he seems to be contemplating the situation. I am very thankful.
