Molly's Hips - Need a bed suggestion

I guess I'm finally ready to say it... Molly has hip dysplasia. We are still working through decisions on possible procedures (a tough decision even further complicated by our upcoming relocation across the U.S.). In the meantime, I’ve noticed the ever-growing Molly needs a new “big girl” bed in her crate.

What I’m looking for is something that eases the pressure points for her hips—so orthopedic in nature—but I also want to take into consideration that she seems to get a little overheated at night (lots of panting, even when she has readily available water). So, does anyone have suggestions on beds? Orthopedic is the primary requirement. Cooling also would be a good feature.

I would appreciate any suggestions or advice--even beyond the bed choice.

Thanks,
Brooke

:( Sorry to hear that.

If you haven't already, make sure you tell her breeder so they are aware. (I don't know Molly's history - if she's from a breeder, a rescue or what the case may be).

Does Molly ever lay on a dog bed or rugs now?
I know many OES who are hot dogs (like my Chewie) and they avoid any padded surfaces whenever possible. He moves rugs in the bathroom to lay on the bare floor, used to scoot crate pads out of the way to lay on the bare crate bottom (I gave them up a long time ago!), and avoids carpet , dog beds and even furniture.

One option might be a cool pad. They are a slim, water filled pad that offers a bit of cushion. It might be cool enough to convince her to give it a try, over laying on the hard floor.

I have a friend with a senior Samoyed who has a lot of arthritis in his old age. She has noted he now soaks up sun in the morning, where normally he avoided it all the time (as he would be too hot). Seems to get the old joints moving enough to start his day.
Sorry to hear that :(

I know it would not help in the crate but, Kuranda beds are wondrful and keeps a nice air flow underneath!
Of course mine will not lay on them unless there is another bed on  it

Good Luck with everything going on!
At this time of year with the extraordinarily hot temps we've been experiencing, my 11 1/2 yo girl with mild spondylosis seems to prefer a cooler surface vs her Kuranda and ortho beds, so I give her a quality yoga mat (currently my old Jade mat -- jadeyoga.com) in an open crate with a 45" by 60" piece of poly fleece she can shape in a pile to suit her needs. You'd be amazed at how supportive, comfortable and durable a good yoga mat can be, but don't confuse it with the cheap mats you get for $15 or less. They tear easily and flatten very quickly.

Namaste! :plead:
