Problem With Biting (Not Breaking Skin) - Strangers

Watson our newest rescue/adopted sheepie is having some issues. He was found running the streets of New Orleans - we fostered and them adopted him as he is just a giant goofball and gets along so well with London (our diva sheepie). Some of the issues we have had with him is petrified of the clippers (so we have to sedate him in order to shave him down or even just to get matts out of him as he hates grooming). Issue two - pees and poops on our concrete patio - ok we can handle that too. His biggest issue is that when people come over that he does not know he bites them. Does not break the skin but leaves a pretty vicious looking bruise. This has happened twice now. When my family or friends come over that he knows well - no issues. But let someone new come in and he bites. Ok we either have to stop this or he is going to need to be PTS or rehomed with someone that can work with him. My homeowner's insurance policy excludes animal liabilty due to us fostering sheepies and having three large dogs.

Any suggestions or help?

Oh Wyn, that sucks :(

Can you just put him up when people in question come over?
I know that is not a fix but, it is avoiding the alternative.
:ghug:
We have been putting all three up when someone comes over but one of the sheepies (Sam) knows how to open the door. 8O We discovered this the other day when the lawn guy came over to cut grass. He is one of the two that Watson bit. Luckily he has 3 dogs of his own (labs and mixes) and was very great about the whole thing. But yep - Sam has figured out how to open and even lock the door.
That is not good news :(

Do you think you could try a basket muzzle? Then he could be out, all the dogs could be out. It would certainly make for less stress and maybe be a good starting point for his socialization rehab.
He would still be meeting new people and getting practice and exposure, just everyone would be safe.

Sorry a problem got you to stop back in, Wyn - we miss hearing from you and the mafia!!
Behavorist?
How is he with stuffies? Teach him to greet strangers with a stuffie in his mouth. riley has never been a biter/mouther, but she has chosen to greet people with a stufie in her mouth.

Asia does the same thing...if she gets too excited she picks up a stuffie and keeps it in her mouth until she cools down.
Put him on a leash when strangers come over. Have them bring (or you give to them before they enter) good treats boiled chicken or little yummies Have them throw them on the floor in front of him. Do not let them hand feed him because once he eats the treat (GULP) they have to with draw their hand and there is a chance of a nip. This way he will associate good things with new people coming in Once they are in have them sit (or what ever they are going to do) and not make eye contact. After he is comfortable with LOTS of folks entering then you can move to handing him treats Hopefully he will learn that guests coming in means good things
Good to hear from you Wyn! The leash and treats sounds like a good idea.
Hope to hear from you more often, miss the mafia antics!

wyn,
i'm so confused, the marcello crime family has been taken over by sheepies?!!? 8)
might be why the fbi is more concerned with the northeast. 8)

the treats and leash may also work on getting london to bathroom off the concrete. let us know how the stuffie works out. sounds like a good plan.
Actually he is not a stuffie playing dog. Those belong to London LOL. With Watson being rescued from the streets of New Orleans I have a feeling that his first year of life was spent in a home with no grass backyard (just my experience from living in New Orleans) which is why he is more comfortable pooping on the concrete patio. Actually not a problem with me - makes picking up poop easier.

As far as the biting goes. I think we are going to try a basket muzzle on him.
