The purging continues....

Today I did some actual cleaning/purging WITH my husband. Man, what an eye opener!

Three years ago I reorganized the winter hats, mitts, etc. I put them into plastic tubs, and kept the mismatched items in case their mates showed up. Anything that was found got thrown in the tub. Today I pulled down the tubs (note: nothing's really been USED from the tubs as things go IN but never go OUT).

I found maybe one set that was made complete in the three years that have passed. I threw out everything that wasn't matched, plus some things that were in rough shape. Honestly, how many pairs of dollar store, black, stretchy gloves do we NEED? I think the ones my nails have popped through can hit the garbage.

Oh, the whining! Do I know how much money those cost? (Yep, a buck a pair....) What is wrong with me? Why is this so easy? (I must admit, it FEELS GOOD!)

We did the bathroom cupboard (scary, scary place), the medicine cabinet (his alone, and apparently expired prescriptions from 2006 hold a special place in his heart), the hall closet, the two bins of scarves (handmade, part of my yarn addiction), a huge storage area full of yarn, and a section of the basement/furnace room.

There were four large bins of papers stored in the furnace room. They were all 1997 and earlier. I actually went through every single one and shredded nearly everything. When the shredder overheated we burned the rest in the fireplace (yes, it's hot and muggy out today, but when you're on a roll you're on a roll...that's what AC is for).

I feel great, but he finally decided to go out with his cousin to see a movie. I think it was all too much for him. On his way out he asked me to not throw out anymore of his treasures until he got back. I almost felt sorry for him. Poor guy.

Anyway, gotta get back to it. He's only going to be gone for so long, and I need to make the most of things. (For the record, I don't throw away anything of his that has actual value...his "treasures" are usually empty Coke bottles, cardboard boxes, and anything he can pull out of a dumpster that's made out of metal.)

And...best of all....after only six months the giant four way (I think that's how many ways) extension ladder is OUT OF MY LIVING ROOM. (And it was not even brought in there in the first place to be used.)

Purging always feels good.... for the non-hoarders that is.
   Thanks for the heads up, I need to toss the mitten and hat collection as well. I need the plastic container for other things.
Awwwwe poor hubby... :(
I'm right there with you....
Nick and I are moving in together next week so we're both purging a LOT of stuff.

Well....it's more me purging all of his stuff. MUHAHAHAHA
I mean do you still need handouts from your College Writing101 Class? (He graduated like 12 years ago!!)
His collection of rusty kitchen knives make me imagine weird movie plots...
Maybe a "man" thing...My hubby can't part with a darn thing. I usually clean out closets, garage, etc when he is travelling on business. He knows I do it and comes home yelling. wehat did you get rid o? I tell him, if you can tell me what you are missing, you can have it back :lmt: So far, I've yet to have to keep anything of his I threw out! Listen, if its packed away for years and you didn't need it, you DON"T need it...just discard! Don't even look inside...
I feel great..this house has a loft with an attic you easily walk into..husband would let paperwork and anything he didn't know what to do with pile up in the loft and eventually the attic...we bought some great bunk beds for company and eventually granddaughters to go in the loft...my sweetie spent last two weekends...everything important filed...three truckloads to the dump...two truckloads for goodwill, one for habitat for humanity, a few items to house in Ga...loft is cleaned and ready for guest...attic has very little in it...feels great! If we buy something new..something else goes out..no more put it in the attic! I even got rid of nice work clothes since I have not worked in 3 years...closet has so much space for first time since we married 36 years ago. We found it hard to part with sentimental items..took pictures of them and let them go...we decided we do not want to burden our daughter with so much one day...we have been trying to get our parents to sort thru tons of stuff...we also decided it was silly storing stuff we didnt use anymore and daughter doesnt want. It feels so great to be done...did notice husband storing old cards in his dresser when he didnt know I was looking! Wonder how long loft will look like a bedroom...
...nice!~

Going to clean out my mitten bin right now. It's a 3 tiered rack, right inside the door!  :plead:

Seeing I finally put away my last snow shovel 2 weeks ago...I think it's safe to sort and put away the mittens/ gloves as well...

Although - Todd JUST put his Carhartt coveralls away last week - with considerable prompting!!
I keep my winter hats, gloves, etc. in a Christmas gift bag. Which is still sitting on a dining room chair. It's been 96 this week--I don't think I'll be needing them. Perhaps I should wash them and put them away.
Not to throw a wrench into all the winter glove purging but...I snip off just the finger tips and come winter, I can still wear a pair of gloves yet keep my fingers available to train, treat and/or pick up poop...With real gloves I just can't use the fingers properly!
We just sold the house we lived in for 17 years. We have been cleaning out the basement and the garage. I have found mittens without a partner. I even found my high school class ring. I haven't seen it in years. I guess that tells you I am getting old. My husband saves everything. We have taken truckloads to Goodwill and have shredded multiple bags of old papers. I found cancelled checks from 1991!!! It feels good to get rid of so much. Now I have to try and find places for the things we did not get rid of.
Keep up the purging.
I was helping a friend do a similar purge a few years back. She had collected things form three different moves, a short marriage, and four different houses. She had always just boxed up her things and moved them on to her next place. She had books back from college and papers galore. All the boxes had ended up in her cottege in a "storage room" which was packed floor to ceiling. She wanted to renovate the cottage and so the task needed to be done. Her sister and I agreed to help and so my friend started with the large stuff and I decided to tackle some of the papers and books. We finished the room after two full days and she was totally satisfied.......espeically when I found a 5,000 dollar check in with the paperwork. I couldn't believe my eyes and then looked at the date. What bank in their right mind would cash a check that was 3 years old. With out hesitation she said she has the best bank and yes she was sure they would. I couldn't believe it but they did. :yay: :excited: Now I have to remember did I ever submit my cleaning bill to her?????

always look at things before you toss :twitch:
I love to purge. It feels great. Sometimes I find things that are useful but mostly the stuff goes and I never miss it. I am not buying any more large bins. I thought it was a good way to organize but things that go in there just disappear. It is ok for holiday decorations or something that you only need seasonally or for small things (drill bits, picture hanging supplies, etc.). But those general purpose large bins are just clutter magnets.
I have bins for decorations too, I label them and then get lazy putting the stuff away so I still have to go thru them in order to know what I've got.
I have bins (totes) for the seasonal stuff - bet thing I ever did.
They stack neatly, I have different colors for different holidays, so I can just grab the ones I need. :D

And I did get my mitten rack items washed and put away!!
A few months ago I decided to put my house on the market. I went through all three levels and boxed up everything I hadn't used in the last year........arts and crafts supplies, holiday stuff, decorative stuff, furniture, jewelry, toys, anything and everything. I held an auction and made $10,000. What a good feeling to have so much extra space in my house and extra money in my pocket! :D
