Anybody have any idea what this is about?
Probably the bombings that happened this morning: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254705
That would be my guess.... we have several members from Norway, not sure if any are from Oslo but I think so.... hope everyone is ok
yes and shootings at a youthcamp which are believed to be related to the bombings.
Just guessing, but they have an Iman they want to deport but he warned of retaliation. Also isn't Norway part of the war on Libya?

Our involvement in/support of military actions in Afghanistan seems to be the point of contention according to the main Oslo newspaper. It's really kind of irrelevant. If somebody has a gripe, they'll always find some reason to justify their actions.

Some group has apparently already taken "credit". The Swedish terrorist experts - and they've dealt more with these issues than we have - are saying it smells like al Quaida. Who knows till the dust settles some.Probably a good thing it happened on a Friday in July. The country semi- shuts down for three weeks then.

I don't know what the situation at the youth camp is. That to me is truly bizarre and even more frightening in some ways. A former prime minister apparently spoke there earlier today (it's a politically oriented camp) - just skimming the news so far. I can't see the connection. It's been more than a a decade and a half since she last ran the country and she's been the director of the WHO and is involved in climate change issues now and it doesn't in any event seem like she was the target from what I can gather, but...? Just strange.

IF reports are correct, they apprehended a "nordic looking" person in connection with the shootings. Given the incredibly low levels of violence in the country as a general rule, two such horrific events on the same day are unlikely to be a coincidence though.

Brr!

The likelihood of Grete being caught up in either situation is incredibly low, but it would be reassuring if she checked in nonetheless. :(

 This is tragic; HUGE Explosion in our pieceful city, in the centre of Oslo between all the goverments buildings.
And right after that a man dressed like a policeman started shooting at Utøya, camp for young people between 15 and 25, who are interested in politics. The leader of AUF is alive, we don't know how many that's hurt or dead.

We are really in shock. Whats happening to our peacful sivilystion?
Freedom in my town is to go outdoors and nothing dangeres usely happends.

You can read for yourself:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254634

and The new York Time:
http://www.nytimes.com/
I am so sorry this horror has happened in your country. Thinking about u and your countrymen.
:D I am ok! And Joy also!
I live 8 minutes by car from the place that is bombed, the police thinks it was a bomb.
I always drive through the street among the goverments buildings,
were this explosoin happend, when I go home from the city. Not anymore....maybe.

However today I was at my mothers house a little outside Oslo,
almost 20 km from where the bomb blast, at 15:20 norwegian time when this happend.
I heared a bang from outside, my mothers house and wondered what that was......
smb building a new thunnel ? or is there a thunderstorm on its way?

When I came home a friend told me about the explosion
and I could still see the smoke from the center of Oslo around 18:00 this evening.
:hearts: I burn candle lights for the kids at Utøya and the seven persons or more killed in the city
and their relatives.

:ghug:
I'm very sorry for the cowardly attack on Oslo.

Know that the people of the US stand Shoulder-to-Shoulder with you in this time of crisis.

:| Too early to say, why this happens, however as they write in NYtimes:
"Norway is a member of the NATO alliance and has a small fighting contingent in Afghanistan.
It was one of several countries named by Ayman al-Zawahri,
the leader of Al Qaeda, as potential targets for attack."

Norwegian military also bombs in Libya, like you say, and the primeminister and our goverment
have recently, a couple of days ago, declared that Norway will approve and support a Palistina state.
This looks like a carbomb or a suicide bomb. Sorry if my english is bad.
Grete, I am so very sorry to hear this saddening news.
I am extremely happy you were not driving through that part of the city today!!!
Truly is sickening what this world has come to!!! You are in my thoughts and prayers for the families that have lost loved ones.
Again, I am so very sorry.
Hugs to you and Joy,

:hearts: Thanks!.......And you really know what this is about!
I didn't believe the pictures we got from the states 9/11.
Remember I at first thought it was a new horror film made to show the worst sceenery ever.
Couldn't believe what I saw, made me out of my mind seeing the people that jumped out of the towers.
Then calling to US to find out where my friend was........oh, the world cannot ever be the same after 9/11.

:hearts: Thank you!
Prayers to the families.
Psht. Don't worry about language. Besides which you're still in shock.

I've walked down that street, by those buildings, I still can't wrap my mind around it. Just glad you and Joy are OK :ghug:

Pictures from our city:
http://www.abcnyheter.no/nyheter/110722 ... t-i-bilder

At least 7 are killed in the city and now they say that at least 9 or 10 young people are killed on the camp at Utøya.
The police think that this is somehow tha same crime and are suching several places for more bombs.
It's so horrible. About 700 was there for the weekend.
AUF - Arbeiderpartiets UngdomsFylking - have had weekend every year,
for the young people that are interested in politics, since the beginning of 1950's or smth.

Gro harlem Brundtland was there today and our primeminister, jens Stoltenberg, should go out there tomorrow.
Maybe he was the goal......I don't know.

Statsministerens kontor= the priministers office. All the goverments buildings at one place
.....maybe we should change that?
I am so sorry

:phew: It is amost unbelievable.
Nothing like this has ever happend in our city or country before.

A norwegian man, 32 years old, is now arrested at Utøya and in dialog with the police.
He was also seen in the center of our city when the bomb explodied.
He had dressed himself in a policmans suit and we still don't know have many people he
shot at Utøya and how many he killed in Oslo.
Once upon a time we would have known how to deal with traitors/collaborators.

Then again, as Stoltenberg said (translated), "You will not destroy us, our democracy. We are a small, but proud nation. No one will bomb us into silence, no one will shoot us into silence. This evening and tonight we will take care of each other. Tomorrow we will prove that the Norwegian democracy is at its strongest when it matters."

Grete, as you no doubt recall, though it was before your time and mine, we've been down this road before, and on an even more devastating scale, and it only made the country stronger.

So sorry for the families.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

I've been thinking about you all day Grete. I haven't had a chance to check facebook and the forum busy day at work. I'm very sorry this has happened to your country. I'm glad you and your family are ok.

Lisa Frankie and Mattie
I am very happy that you and your family are safe. My thoughts are with those who were affected by this horrible crime.
Hi,

The whole world is shocked about what has happened in Norway. The Canadian news has been filled with news since the event. I couldn't believe the news when I first heard of it - not your peaceable country! I didn't think I had heard correctly.
No country deserves the senseless act of terrorism. I can only imagine the shock and outrage over such tragic deaths and injuries. My heart goes out to the relatives of the victims and the people of Norway.

:hearts: :hearts:
We love you Norway
 84 killed on a youth camp run by the governing Labour Party at an island on the Tyrifjorden lake.
:hearts: I am so sorry for their families. Cannot imaging what they have been through to night.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14259166

The killer was a young norwegian man, he had a Facebook and a Twitter profile.
And he has political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14259989
"The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang quoted a friend as saying that the suspect
turned to right-wing extremism when in his late 20s. The paper also said that he
participated in online forums expressing strong nationalistic views"

He must have been pretty mad too, impossible to imaging how anyone can behave like this.
The latest news:

cowardly act of terrorism, no matter who did it or why.....prayers to the people involved....

So relieved you and Joy are safe.

This is so horrible I am without words.

:hearts: Thank you Ron and everybody for your support!

This has been a horrible nightmare in daylight, going on for hours.
How can one man do so much horror.......it's a disaster.
And we are all in the same boat against this kind of evil cruelty.

I don't know what to say either.

:ghug:
Even though by distance you are far away, my rattled emotions are right there with you....
I'm very glad that you and your loved ones are ok. :ghug:
I am so sorry Grete, and also for everyone affected by this. :(

It just takes one bad person to ruin lives of so many....and apparently no one or no part of the world is exempt from this. :plead:
There are no words to describe this terrible act. I've been following the reports also and cannot imagine the horror of the people affected. Those young people didn't have a chance. People do terrible things to each other.
My prayers go out to those is Oslo...I remember all too well our 9/11 attacks. I live just outside of NYC....We lost over three thousand innocent lives... I am sorry that in this year, 2011, these attacks continue...God Bless your country and God Bless those families effected...We stand behind you all the way :ghug: :ghug:
:ghug: Thanks for all the nice words, thoughtfulness and support.

The city of Oslo is in a way paralyzed to day, and so am I.
(Sorry the text is in norwegian.)

"Til ungdommen" - "To the young people" or Face the Foe"; Nordahl Grieg.
(Norwegian)

Original Words in Norwegian by Nordahl Grieg (1936)

Music by Otto Mortensen (1952)

English translation by Rod Sinclair (2004) (Fragment)

Faced by your enemies
On every hand
Battle is menacing,
Now make your stand

Fearful your question,
Defenceless, open
What shall I fight with?
Where is my weapon?

Here is your battle plan,
Here is your shield
Faith in this life of ours,
The common weal

For all our children’s sake,
Save it, defend it,
Pay any price you must,
They shall not end it

Neat stacks of cannon shells,
Row upon row
Death to the life you love,
All that you know

War is contempt for life,
Peace is creation
Death’s march is halted
By determination

We all deserve the world,
Harvest and seed
Hunger and poverty
Are born of greed

Don’t turn your face away
From needs of others
Reach out a helping hand
To all your brothers

Here is our solemn vow,
From land to land
We will protect our world
From tyrants’ hand

Defend the beautiful,
Gentle and innocent
Like any mother would
Care for her infant.

"Face the Foe"
( English)
Such a terrible thing. And a bomb is horrible enough, but it is also impersonal, however to walk around and shoot up to 90 unarmed people? That is the absolute lowest a human can sink to, an abyss. I am so sorry for all those families. Grete, the first Norwegian version of the song was beautiful.
Thoughts and prayers are with the people of Oslo. Glad you are safe Grete--take care.
:hearts: Oslo is our town again - the people of Oslo's town.

(People here are standing on the seaside of the City Hall.)

BBC:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14281494

:cheer: It was ment to be a parade from the City Hall to Yongstorget
......too many came to the town for a parade, they had to stay here and sing instead.
They said on TV today that more than 100.000 went down to the town with flowers and roses.
( The norwegian labour has a red rose as their badge.)

Their were people everywhere in the town, and everybody had flowers and decorated our Oslo. :hearts:
I am so glad this happend - we have never felt more united in this town ever before. :D
And the famous Norwegian spirit rises to the challenge once again.
:roses:

Thanks for sharing, Grete. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

:hearts: "If one man can show that much hatred, imagine how much love all of us can show together" :hearts:
(young woman in the Norwegian Youth Labour Movement. In norwegian, picture below.)

We went to down town at noon to day to be together with people for one minute silence
remebering the dead and wounded. So tender, much sorrow, however - we were together in it.

Flowers outside the chuch in Oslo city.

A lot of hugs, tears, hugs, smiling, kids saying so many nice things in their special way.
And a lot of people wanted to cuddle Joy, o'course. We went into the church and sat their for a while.
People were crying and holding hands, hugging, talking and lightning a lot of candles. So peaceful.
:ghug:
Your people and country are amazing.
Very nice to see how other nations handle such a tragedy.
Love all the flowers and singing with love still in their hearts.
Thank you for sharing this video of your people,Grete.
Hugs to you and Joy.

:lmt: Seems like it all happend just before yesterday
and that the first three days where one long nightmare.
(Everybody was Watching TV all the time if there were a TV close....)

Life is normal to me, I shall not complain....as far as I know all of my friends are ok.
Oslo is a small town, the daughter of a friend of mine lost her friend.......and so on.
It's summertime and I don't meet my friends in the choirs, hope they're all ok,
and it is easy to think that people are on vacation.

To day they police think that they will finish the work and know all the ID's
and most of or maby all of the bodies should be known.
(Except from the bodies they might not have found in the buildings, and some are in small pieces.)
 It is hard to watch the news and the pictures of the dead, someone you know might show up anytime.

Friends of mine were a few meeters from the bomb when it attacked, still healthy
- :hearts: Oh, I am so happy for everybody who was lucky that day! :hearts:

The whole country grieves, there were youth from all over Norway in the camp at Utøya.

Foto: Aftenposten.
The police believe there were about 150.000 standing in the front of our City Hall with roses monday.

Foto Aftenposten. It was crowdy all over the city that evening.......and roses and flowers everywhere. This is outside the chuch at Stortorget.
Grubbegaten, which is closed now, is behind the yellow house in the pic, then it is about 100 meeters up to the goverments buildings.
Thinking of you,Grete and your people.
Your country is in my prayers.
These pictures speaks volume to our world.
Thank you for sharing,
Hugs to you and Joy. :hearts:
