Barking all night

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the great advice from my last post.

I have another question.

When Harry and I go visiting my parents, and we stay over night, he barks all night. He sleeps in the kitchen at their house like he does at his own house. He will go to sleep at first and with an hour or two he is barking crazy and he barks all night. We take him out to relieve himself, we put him back in the kitchen he barks. I've allowed him out of the kitchen to sleep in the room with me, he is still restless and barks. At home he goes to bed in the kitchen and he sleeps 6 to 8 hours a night.

Harry has been going to my parents since I first got him. He actually stayed with them for 2 weeks while I was away. He sleeps in the kitchen with their little poodle that is his buddy.

I've used a bark collar on him and it doesn't work at night, he continues to bark and keep the whole house up.

Do you have any idea why he does this.

My parents are on going to ban him for any over night visits LOL.

I do not have an answer for you, but I hope you do find something that works to stop the all night barking at grandma's house.

I'm sorry and totally understand. The only way Yuki is allowed over my parents place is if she stays in one room ...which is why we spend a lot of time outside while we're there. Have you tried a different bark collar? Maybe one that sprays citronella? That's what we had to use for the first 2 years (yes, years but we only visit once every few months). She only needed it at bedtime. Now she GETS IT ...and we don't do anything AND she's quiet. She just gets depressed and walks in her room. Let's say ...so depressed that when it's time to go outside [to play!!], she still doesn't get excited b/c she knows it's not time to go. Until we open the car door, she stays like that. ...and when the car door opens... she'll spend an hour in the car refusing to leave (but my husband is still packing up the car).

Otherwise, I'd suggest considering a kennel while you visit. My mom hates dogs, is very OCD about her clean house, and in general... I hate being inconsiderate, so I try to make yuki behave as MUCH as possible [which she does] or else I'd never bring her.
Quite some time ago we had my Mom's terrier stay with us and had the same problem.
She was fine all day but after we put her to bed with our dog in the kitchen she started to bark and kept it up all night. Even our dalmo was really unimpressed at the noise and lack of sleep.

By the 3rd night I was beside myself I was so tired. My DH had a flash of inspiration and got up and left the light above our cook top on so that she could see. Not another peep out of her for the 2 weeks she stayed with us. :phew: We figured she was scared in the dark in a strange environment.

It might not be the answer but it's a simple solution if it works. Let me know if it helps.
