Rudie jumped out the window

I got home from being out for 2-3 hours and could not find Rudie. After frantically checking every room I rang my neighbors' bells (I live in an apartment unit with 4 apartments, we're on the second floor). I asked if they had seen him (quite hysterically) and my upstairs neighbor had seen him when she came home freaking out and jumping at the window. This is something he has never done before. I ran upstairs and sure enough there was a huge hole in the screen. I ran outside and started screaming his name, and he came trotting out from under the deck in the back.

We went straight to the emergency vet. He had a small cut on his lip, but otherwise nothing else was wrong. X-rays looked normal and clinically he was fine. He will be staying over for observation because after a trauma there is always a chance of something going wrong.

I am so upset. I've never experienced panic like that in my life. I will be devastated if something is wrong. I'm so scared there will be bleeding or something else, I am beside myself. Everyone is trying to talk me down because he seems ok right now... but the "what ifs" are killing me.

Please keep Rudie in your thoughts.

Rude dog jumped out a 2nd floor window?
OMG!

Have they done ultrasounds to check for bleeding? Is that even the best way to check for bleeding?

Any idea why he would do that?

Fingers & paws crossed he's OK.
Oh my....I am so sorry. Fingers crossed that everything turns out okay. This is actually something I worry about with our Rudy too. He jumps against our window upstairs in a. Similar fashion.

Virtual hugs and good wishes to Rude and to you. :ghug:
Brick or Zeke had done something similar.

I was in my bedroom working on something (maybe painting) and I heard this boom from one of the other bedrooms.
I run in to find Brick & Zeke standing right at the window and the screen was missing.
They looked back at me as if to say "I didn't do it". I calmly called them to me and they came. I pivoted so that I was between them & the open window. I quckly shut the window.
I then went outside to retrieve the screen. It was twisted pretty bad. It's not supposed to go that way for removal. When you take them out, you pull them in. I had to work at straightening the screen frame, which took a little while and then re-install it.

They never did anything like that before and never again.
Fingers & paws crossed for Rudie and :ghug: to you .
I hope everything is okay with Rudie.

I was panicking on your behalf as I read about Rudie. What a nightmare. I am keeping everything crossed that he is fine. Keep us posted and try hard to not think of the what ifs, what ifs suck out your energy and you need your energy for the big huge hug you will be giving Rudie today.
OMG
I'm sorry to hear this. I'm sure it's very scarey for you.
Rudy is in our thoughts

I hope Rudy is ok, please take care of yourself too, you want to be ok when he come home and look you with her big sheepie eyes and ask tell you " I love you Mom"
I wonder what got him so excited/worked up that he jumped out??

How scary :(

I hope he's doing alright today and has no ill effects from his adventure. :hearts: :crossed: :crossed:
8O 8O 8O 8O I hope he's 100% ok! Rudie's certainly a really tough little dog, I'm sure he is ok! Must have been an ice-cream truck going by... After the huge worries of securing your kitchen and gas stove, now you'll have huge worries about the windows. What about crating him? I thought you were considering those custom made industrial strength steel cages someone had linked. If he can tolerate a crate, it seems like a situation that screams for crating.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Sending good thoughts that all turns out A-OK with your Rudie. They can scare the wits out of us,for sure.
I wonder too, what sparked his interest? Please keep us informed.
Robin
My short-changed in the brains department rescue dog broke a window once, but thankfully she didn't jump through it. And in her case it was only the first floor, but still... :twitch: :twitch: :twitch:

She's been crated ever since if I'm not home. Even when I am home she goes in the basement if I'm working another dog outside, which drives her insane. No more nasty surprises, though. :phew:

Fingers crossed for the big dude :crossed: . Chances are he's just fine. It's you he seems hellbent on doing in :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: :twitch:

Bet he was surprised when he went out and realized how far down it was  Hopefully he'll scratch that off his list of things to do, though he seems not to learn particularly well from his mistakes. You gotta give him credit for perserverance, though. The icecream truck theory seems plausible. Or a neighborhood cookout, maybe? 8)

Breathe. It'll be OK.

Kristine
As of 7 am he is still ok. They did x'rays last night and everything is normal, clincically he is normal. The only thing he had was a cut on his lip. He's staying until tonight and we'll have him re x-rayed (even if he looks normal) just to make sure.

I have no idea what would make him that crazy! He never ever goes for the window when we're in the house and we've really never seen evidence of him doing it when we weren't home. The only change was that Dave had a box of records next to the window that he clearly was standing on, so he probably saw all our neighbors outside. Plus there was a concert at the place behind us and I'm sure there were lots of extra people out.

I'm getting bars on the windows.
Oh, Heather! 8O That dog is going to give you a heart attack!

I am so glad that, except for his little boo-boo, he seems to be unhurt. Don't you just wonder what is going on in that tiny brain???

Just throwing this out there, but have you thought about anti-anxiety meds for him? Oscar takes amitriptyline for his IBD, which is supposed to help with the stress component. Our current bout of pancreatitis is the first digestive trouble we've had since starting this med two years ago, and the vet felt this particular episode was autoimmune related. They said this drug might make him drowsy, but I have seen no evidence of that at all, even coupled with Benadryl. With Oscar, we are careful to only change one thing at a time, so we have the clearest possible picture of cause and effect. When we started the amitriptyline, nothing overtly changed with his behavior, but I do think it has helped his tummy substantially.

Anyway, we are glad that Rude Dog is safe.

Well you cannot fault Rudie...he wanted to go to that concert filled with lots of friendly people!
Sounds like he will be OK and hopefully he realized just how far that darn widow took him.
Robin :rimshot:
Holy Cow, Rudy :cow:

You have to stop scaring your mom like that!! 8O

Glad to hear he seems to be doing okay.

Let me get this straight: Rudy busted out and now you, your husband and the good dog all have to live behind bars? :cow:

I'd give you a hard time about it, but I dropped my mattress on the floor so an injured dog could continue to sleep on the bed with me 4 1/2 years ago and I have yet to revert back to sleeping like a human being again - it's easier for the old dog, the young dog, there's always a new reason

All dog people are clearly certifiable. In our case I think we can make the case that the dogs drove us to it, though.

Mark my words, it's a good thing you went to law school: sooner or later the rogue is going to need a good defense lawyer ;-)

Continued good wishes for the trouble maker. 8)

Hope he is doing ok!
:ghug:
Kristine, your whole post cracked me up. I thought Walter was going to make me crazy, but Rudie has somehow surpassed him in being my worst dog.

Good news though, Rudie is doing really well. Eating and drinking normally and overall fine. I paid for 24 hours at the emergency vet so I'm leaving him there until tonight because I am a worrier and I would constantly be checking his gums to make sure they were still pink! I'll pick him up tonight and give him a good talkin to.
I'm betting the "good talking to" will consist of tears, hugs, and lots of "what were you thinking?"

So glad he is OK. Nothing like a good scare to give you that adrenaline energy boost!

:ghug:
Wow how frightening ? Oh Rude dog! So happy he is ok and hope he is! I cannot imagine how you feel! Wow! Hope you can rest and relax. Sheepie hugs and kisses to all of you?
Sorry to hear about crazy Rudie. I'm sure he learned his lesson being sent to the ER.
glad he is ok. He got very lucky this time. Not to scare you more but.... my sister has a border collie who went crazy when he saw a squirrel outside her window, He went right through it, glass, screen and all. He was hurt very bad. She had to rush him to the emergency dog vet and they rushed him into surgery. He punctured a lung and cut his liver. Lost lots of blood. 3,000.00 later he is ok. The vet was surprised he lived. Give Rudy hugs and tell him to never do that again. :(

:ghug:
Rude boy is home. He was happy, hungry and tired.

On the vet report: "Rudie ravenously ate the canned food offered." That's my boy!
I have been out of touch today and am just reading about Rudie's adventure. So glad he is home and doing ok.

Our first sheepie, Duffy jumped through a window of our second story apartment years ago ( back in the early 80"s) we were not home and I got the call at school. It was a very frightening experience and ultimately he was ok too. He had never done it before and he never did it again. We never knew what prompted him to take the plunge out the window. We moved a couple of weeks later into a one story rental because (before crates) I was very reluctant to leave him alone.

Hopefully Rudie won't do it again--I know how frightening it is--hope you have recovered too!
I am so very happy to hear Rudie is home and his vet report was a positive report!!!
Sending lots of hugs for Rudie and I hope you can get some much needed rest.
Robin
I'm just reading this now for the first time- I'm glad he's ok!!!
OMG!! 8O Rudie, Rudie, Rudie... you make your mama worry so!

I'm so happy to hear you were able to leap from tall buildings in
a single bound and come away basically unscathed! :phew:
Great outcome for a bad situation. Rudie what were you thinking?
