Drinking more water?

Outside of it being "summer" ...what other reasons could yuki be doing this? I am 100% it isn't b/c she's hot. She's not hot.

She could have just taken to drinking more water b/c she did while on steroids for allergies. ...but has only taken it once in the past week. .... and even then it was 1/4th of a pill given just once.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing something else because my gut says this isn't normal for her and she's doing it b/c she's bothered but I can't figure out what. She hasn't increased her potty trips and her potty looks normal color.

She is itchy. She's in the middle of changing foods. She's 6.5 yo. She's hacking but last time I mentioned this, everyone thought it was just normal. It's rare ...like a few times a day "if" that. I've just now noticed it only seems to happen when she's laying on her back. She hacks it out and then it fine. Repeat if she gets on her back again (feet up in the air).

You mentioned allergies, could this hacking be phlem or other secretions from the nasal area dripping down her throat? Or an itchy throat from the allergies?

You are wise to watch the urine story. Both forms of diabetes may show up as more water intake than normal.
About 6 years ago I was speaking to a long time show breeder and we were discussing the thyroid. He told me you will know if a dog has thyroid issues because they cannot quench their thirst. I hope others can chime in on this. I am repeating what a show breeder told me a few years ago.

If Yuki's still on a steroid, that could explain the increased drinking.

Bumble would hack a few times a day but his was unproductive.. that's something I just realized we don't hear anymore. He completed the food trial for allergies and he isn't chewing the hair off the top of his front foot as he did before. One or both of these may have explained his coughing.

I don't know the effect hypothyroidism has on a dog's drinking... I haven't noted any increase. But we actively screen for hypothyroidism rather than waiting for a problem to appear so we usually catch it early. We had to take a step back with Bumble... we're tapering him off thyroid meds, switched from rutabaga to potato and will retest in about a month to verify that he's truly hypothyroid. :headbang:

As Susan says, allergy dogs may have nasal drip... do you ever see a drop of fluid at her nostril? If it's dripping out, it could also be dripping back in when she rolls on her back. Does she do any reverse sneezing?

But if you continue to feel something isn't right, maybe drop off a urine sample and have a blood draw done to check her levels. It will give you an idea whether there's any need for concern as far as kidneys and it gives you a peek at her system functions.
Not that I think it applies in your particular case with Yuki, but I wanted to add this into a thread on excessive water drinking.

When we put our older dog Jake on Rimadyl it affected his liver, and the result was excessive water drinking and accidents in the house (for the first time ever). As soon as we stopped, the drinking and accidents stopped.
I've never heard of a connection between thyroid and drinking more but I don't have any personal experience....

Maybe she's just hot? also I would suspect a higher sodium level in the new food?
Re the hacking.... especially in a house with young children I'd make sure she is dewormed on a regular basis even if fecal tests are negative.
No experience neither with thyroid issues, except running the panel for OFA.

It could be the steroids. Oscar drinks like a fish and pees like Seabiscuit when on the pred.

The things that immediately popped into my head are diabetes, and Cushing's. How does her coat look? Sometimes that can be a clue if her fur becomes thinner or more dry.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Her skin is more dry. For the first time in her life... there are some flakes towards her rear end. REALLY not bad though ...just something I happened to notice a week ago. Could just be from her scratching b/c of the allergies.

She definitely gets real thirsty when she's on this medicine but it's been several days since she's been on [the tiny tiny bit she got] so that's why I got curious.
I'm hoping it's nothing and her increase in water is ...just b/c she's thirsty. She really does seem fine ...so far. I keep checking that pee to see if something changes.

Thanks for all the advice. I like going in and throwing stuff out instead of hearing "i don't know" from the vet
