Millie is starting conformation classes

In about 3 hours Millie is going to be at her first conformation class and I am excited but sooooo nervous. :?

She has been through puppy class/basic obedience and manners class....but she really loves to play with other dogs and will usually bark like crazy until she gets to meet them. I've tried to correct this behavior by moving her farther away from the other dog until she is calm and she has been making good steady progress.

Tonight being in such close proximity to so many other dogs may, ......and I fear will,....be a nightmare. Does anyone have any tips on how I should handle this? :plead:

Jenn, I have never taken a conformation class but I did learn something in my first (crappy) agility class that has been great for the dog to learn "we are not here to play" and that is the phrase "Short Leash".

Whenever Harry would start to pull towards another dog I would say "short leash" and give a leash correction to pull him back next to me. As a result Harry has not expected to play under all of our class situations.

Let us know how class went.

I love starting new classes.
As Judi says, she needs to learned it's not acceptable, and not allowed.

This really is something that should have been worked on in the class you were in already - I'd be looking for a new place to train, or different instructor.
That's a real basic skill that should have been addressed the very 1st time she did it in class.

Of course it does take a solid commitment on your part by being firm and not ever letting things slide once you decide it's a behavior you don't want.
Millie did want to play with the other dogs tonight while we were waiting for class to begin.....she was barking and pulling :P I thought we were definatly in for a long and embarrassing night.....but once we were in the ring she was fine and not a peep.

The other dogs were all business and I guess it rubbed off on her. The instructor even commented on how well Millie did on her first night. But it was not all good news.......she did insist on laying down when waiting her turn with the "judge" and is to no longer receive treats for sitting or laying....only for standing.

Once when we were stacking, I would get two feet done and she would sit...she did this over and over until our 5 seconds were up! I finally gave up, laughed, knelt down and just hugged her. She did her best and I love her for trying. We have a long road ahead of us, but I will try to make sure we will have fun along the way.

Thanks for the advice on the "short leash" Judi I will give it a try :cheer: Millie's old trainer recommended time outs for this behavior but it did not work. We started with a new facility tonight.
