Is anyone familiar with Adequan for dogs?

Frankies PT suggested trying Adequan for Mattie. Has anyone tried it? I know it's used on horses. I have to do some more reading on it. Are there alot of side effects?

Hoping someone is familiar with it.

Yup. Used it for Belle. It does help. Or at least it did with her. Think of it as glucosamine on steroids (except it's not glucosamine, it's not steroids and I've never heard of any side effects)

If you decide to try it see if you can talk you vet into letting you get the "horse stuff". Same stuff, much cheaper... 8) And learn to do the injections yourself. Otherwise you'll be running back and forth to the vet all the time during the loading period.

Unless protocols have changed since I last used it, of course.

Oliver's hip vet did some of the early research on Adequan in conjunction with Kansas State University Vet School. He said he was shocked at how well it worked in comparison with glucosamine. Just like Kristine said, it's "glucosamine on steroids". He also said it would be cheaper in the long run. We actually just talked with him about it when we went in for a discussion on stem cell therapy ( 8) ). We will be switching Oliver to Adequan injections once his supply of supplements is gone!
It worked for several of my dogs, not on others. No side effects. Once you can give the injections yourself, it's no big deal. Realize the arthritis is still there, it's not healing, but the Adequan does seem to help with the inflamed joint.
Quincy had Adequan shots and they helped alot. No side effects that I noticed. Susan is brave though, as I would have a hard time giving this particular injection. I've given my cat insulin shots, and I regularly gave Quincy allergy shots, but those needles are small gauge and given in a fold of skin. As I recall (and this was awhile ago), Quincy's shots were given along the spine, intramuscularly. (shudder...)

At any rate, we had a positive experience with the Adequan.

Mattie had her first shot last night. The vet used a larger gauge needle, because she says the medication is thick. Mattie cried so loud, she swung her head around and jumped up then sat down and bent the needle in her leg. The vet had to get a new needle and try it again. I had her head held very close to me so she couldn't do that again, and she cried again, but didn't get up so she got the full injection. Poor baby girl. Hopefully next week wont be so hard on her.

Mmmmmmm. That's my ouchie sound. I'm too empathetic. :|

:ghug:

Hoping it will help a lot and that it will be easier
with the next shot. :hearts:
:( Poor Mattie!

Yeah, the pups certainly notice the larger gauge needles as opposed to the smaller. Quincy never even noticed the allergy injections, but he flinched at the Adequan. (Quincy had an EXTREMELY high pain tolerance.) Hopefully, it was the particular placement of the needle, and it won't be so bad for Mattie next time.
