new puppy prep

I have been reading posts on this site for sometime now and after a long time of back and forth, my fiance and i have decided on an OES. we are really excited about getting a new family member (in addition to our very tempermental persian cat) . i have couple ?'s to throw out there for folks to get everyone's opion.
- we live in a large townhome 2500+ sf., does anyone see a problem with townhome living for an OES?
- how are OES' with cats? like i sd our cat is VERY ornery but whenever we dog sit for her mom's 5 mo old OES all he does is want to chase the cat. I assume this will calm down with age? am i correct in thinking this way?
- we are picking out our little buddy in a couple weeks and then for good in early June, other than a crate, collar, leash, plenty of toys, water/food bowls, food (any puppy food rec's are certainly appreciated), and lots of patience, what else should we have for him/her when he comes home?

thanks everyone for posting such good info on this site. it's helped out tremendously.

I would recommend finding a good vet, having all your grooming supplies and finding out about puppy classes. We had a Persian when we had our first OES, but Flash was older and he and the cat did well together, the cat would curl up next to the dogs belly and they would take naps. Then Luke and Beau came along and it was chase the cat time. They did get used to each other and then along came Rosco and Daisy. Rosco made a career out of chasing the cat, the cat would swipe at him but never hurt him. The cat has been gone for 5 years but the dogs still groom themselves like the cat did, and Rosco stills does the swipe move that he learned from the cat. One note of caution-dogs LOVE cat food but it's not good for them so you have to watch that. Good luck with your puppy.
I second the puppy classes. It's good for training but great for sociallizing too-- both with other puppies and people! I can't help you on the cat thing. We've taken Clyde to cat homes before and he just seems confused by them. He didn't chase but that's not to say he wouldn't!

Be prepared for lots of chewing and nipping. I know it sounds redundant but seriously-- wear lousy clothes for the first month or so as much as possible until the teething stops and they aren't so hyper. Many others on the board will concur-- you're going to lose pantlegs and hems! Bitter apple those table corners too!
There are tons of threads in this forum that give all kinds of great tips and suggestions on things to buy, things to plan, etc when brining a new puppy home. I've tried using the search tool however, and can't find any...lol.... I'm going to spend some time looking and see if I can come up with some links.
Ok, here is a link to one thread I finally found in regards to some things to have for your puppy. I'll keep looking and add more as I find them.

thanks for your help. as you know there is no such thing as info overload.
thanks for the thread, definitely some good things to put on my puppy check list.
so, i will keep you posted on after we go to pick out our new puppy in the next couple weeks. we are still up in the air on going male or female. i think we are just going to look at the pups available and find one with the temperment that we like and look for ncie markings too.
and please feel free to provide any more advice, do'/ don't's you want...i am an information hound....
Welcome Shaunb!

Boy, there seems to be a large contingent of people from PA on here!

I don't see any particular problems with a townhouse... except for any barking or any covenenats in the associations by-laws prohibiting dogs, or dogs over a certain size. I assume there are no neighbors UNDER you?

Also, you probably won't have a fenced in area, but as long as your lifestyle permits 2 long and one short walk per day, then I don't have a problem with it!

Again, welcome to the forum!
we have "backyard" but as of right now it is not fenced. my neigbor has a fenced in area for her golden retriever and it seems to work well for her dog. i also work from home most of the time, so i will be able to spend some QT with the new puppy during it's formative months!

thanks again for your input....
Get the largest kennel needed for the dog as an adult, and see if you can get one with a partition insert so you change the size.

Food dishes that won't tip over, I have stainless steel, but wish I had an elevated type.

Choose a quality dog food, we feed Nutro but there is better choices out there. See the post on medical and nutrition. My dog loves the taste of Royal Canin, unfortunately we can't afford to keep it in stock. So we found she also likes Nutro, it has no by products....look at different brands.

Washable bedding. Lots of toys, and chew things. Grooming tools already mentioned.

Obedience classes and puppy social time is going to be the most important thing you can do with a puppy.

As for the cat, you can try rubbing the cat down, and then rub the scent on the dog...I heard this helps the cat to accept it because it has his scent. When you get the pup, he/she will be scared of things so if you cat puts the pup in his place then the adjustment is easy. If not then the dog may see this a fun thing to play with and chase the cat, then the cat is forever scared. I have a cat that if we have a puppy he swipes and establishes himself as something to reckon with. If we have a visiting adult dog, not familiar with cats... it's a different situation and the cat is very stressed and goes into hiding until the dog leaves. The dog is chasing, and he can't stand his ground.

We have two cats, and they get along fine with the dog. The dog will do a short chase with one cat (sm female), but never touches them. They don't cuddle but have an understanding.

Good luck, enjoy the pup. Remember it takes one day at time for the training, eventually it falls into place and you have everything you wanted.
Well, we went to the breeder on Sunday and picked out our newest member of the family.
We pick him up in 1 month and we can't wait. It was more difficult to choose one from the 8 available since the only things all of them wanted to do was sleep. so we just went on markings and pup size and size of his mother (65 lbs). We decided on the name Henri (pronounced Henry)- the "i" in the spelling is just for a little flair!
we are SO excited!
just thought i would share our excitement with everyone!

here's a picture of the little guy

He's a cutie pie!! I feel your excitment!! Congratulations!
He IS a DOLL! Conmgratulations on your soon to be addition! I look forward to more stories and pics!

Karen :)
Cute, cute, cute! Wow, I can't believe that Bailey was that size only a few months ago. Things sure do change in a hurry! Take lots of pictures of Henri when he's a baby because they sure grow fast.

Make sure you have lots of stuff for him to chew on - preferably things that squeak! Bailey also loves his Puppy Kong.

And just a warning - having a puppy changes your whole work from home dynamic. I work from home often, and much to Bailey's disappointment I really need to work 8 or more hours a day. If I'm having a teleconference I will crate him in advance. My clients wouldn't understand barking or squeaky toys (I'm in sales). Bailey has gotten used to the fact that there are times when he has to be in his crate even if I'm home.
Good point Bailey's Mom. my fiance's step father works from home and their new OES (6 mos.) is with him all day! and then this past weekend when he was gone on a fishing trip and he was in his outdoor kennel for a good part of the day, he had a bit of an anxiety attack and turned the place upside down.
conference call or not, i think Henri is going to have to get used to some "alone time". that way when we are out of the house he doesn't panic (or at least that's the plan!)
Henri is just precious!! I'm so excited for you, I'm sure time will move a little slow until you get him home  It sounds like you've received tons of great info from everyone, one thing I would do if you can is fence in your backyard. I take Max on lots of walks, but he really loves running off leash in the backyard, and as they get older it is wonderful to let them run off that evil puppy energy they seem to get everyday!! These little guys can really run fast, I am quite astounded by them as I never thought of OES as being so athletic, but they really are!! Good luck,
Sharon
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, sorry to tell ya folks but poor shaunb got a picture of my new puppy Ty (a maltese) on her post instead of her puppy. Can't wait to see what the REAL OES puppy looks like though :D , and isn't TY a cutie :D :D :D

My advice for shaunb: get LOTS AND LOTS of sleep before your new puppy comes. Ty has been home for 11 days and started out pretty good but the last few nights I feel like a new mom getting up for 2:00 feedings.

Also, my OES Tasker absolutely HATES cats. Have no idea why, he's never lived with a cat or had experience with a cat. But show him a cat and he's after it like a shot.

Thios is a gret forum, just keep reading. I just found this forum a month or so ago after owning an OES for 8 years and I've learned lots of stuff.

ooops ... probably my fault! Shaun, let me know where your pictures are, and I'll fix it up!
Just saw your puppy in the photo secton, he's beeeeeeutiful (and definately looks like a sheepie). But since I've said since day 1 that Ty has the soul of a sheepie I guess the mistake is ok :D
I thought that was Ty...didn't want to say anything...
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE  It was a test by Ron to see who was paying attention!!!!

That's sooo going to be Jasper if we ever have to leave him alone. He is always with us! I probably do need to give him some alone time, but he hates his kennel (barks and howls the entire time he's in it & upsets the kids), so I'm not sure how to separate him from us. So far, he's been on all of our trips though. Good thing he's great in the car. :)
Everyone has already given you awesome advice, I just wanted to congratulate you on your new puppy. He's too adorable!
Ok, did I get them right now?
HEHEHHEHEHEH!! Yup you got it right!!! But not to worry, I'm a proud momma, I don't mind Ty getting a little more air time :D Course Henri might not like have to share the billing!
Well, we FINALLY picked little Henri up on Memorial Day afternoon. He has been absolutely great. So well behaved and loving (complete opposite from our Persian cat!). He just wants to be next to us all the time and he lays by my feet while I am at work (at home) all day.
His first two nights in the crate have not been without some leakage and we have had a few #1 incidents on the carpet, but it's as much us getting use to him as it is his puppy bladder.
He is pretty much a baby b/c he like to whine and wimper all the time. At night it takes him about 1/2 hr to settle in and this AM we woke to the sounds of our wimpering little boy. But other than that I dare say...HE'S PERFECT!

For those that love pictures....

Enjoy! I know we are!
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, he is just beeeeeeutiful!!! I love the pirate" look with the eye patch. Congratulations!!!!!!! I hope your puppy sleeps through the night better than MINE IS
He's adorable!! I just love the patch! :D
So cute! and so small! Enjoy and take lots of pictures, because he'll grow really fast. And a few months from now you'll be over the sleep deprivation...

Then you'll just be tired from chasing him around and cleaning up other sorts of messes, like holes in the yard and muddy footprints. ;)

Just kidding! Well, not really but they're worth it!

Not kidding at all - Bailey will step over many, many toys just to get out the back door and dig in the dirt! But you can't help but love him.
