TICKS Abundant in 2011??

Has anyone else noticed the increase in ticks this year??

I've heard that nationwide, there is a tick problem and some prescription meds (like frontline) are not as effective as they once were.

I have never had ticks in my yard and I've lived in my house for 14 years. I've got to spray my yard. I live in the city, not a wooded area so I'm very surprised.

Please post if you are experiencing the same problem.

Nope, not here in MN.
We always have some ticks, but nothing unusual about this year.

Now with all this rain, I'm getting worried about the mosquito hatch...but not the ticks. :?
Mosquitos are horrible this year here! I hope no ticks, never have had them yet and I'd like to keep it that way.
Yes, I've found 3 American Dog Ticks in the past month or so... the past 10 years
were zero! We had a lot of rain this spring and cooler temperatures. I'm not sure
if that had anything to do with it.
Never have had ticks here and I live in a suburb and have not seen any this year.
No fleas, this year, so far.A few years ago, Frontline did not work for us either, bought it for fleas.I remember others complaining about Frontline, that year, too.Advantix has always worked for us.
Robin
I use Advantix!
There is a nice Canadian company that I get it from for CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to call today and the customer service was wonderful, her accent was so pleasing!

We do no have a tick problem but, fleas in the south are ridiculous
Yes Kathy thanks for that info.
When I need it,if I need it, I know where to buy it for a very good price.

We have TONS of ticks in NJ. You just can't avoid them. I have even had about 6 or more on me since the season began. We do a lot of hiking though, and we live in the woods, so I am not surprised.
Dahlia has had dozens of ticks on her that I have taken off of her fur. Some were slightly attached, but, then they die bec/ of the Frontline Plus.
We just are so used to it in NJ that it doesn't even phase me anymore.
Mosquitos are horrendous this year since we had a rainy spring.
Knock on wood, I haven't found any on the dogs at this point, but I've found four on me so far, none attached, even just walking outside at work! No weeds, no tall grass or anything, yet I looked down and saw one on my light colored pants. Ugh!

I've been thinking it's a bad year here, yes. They seem to be the worst in May and June so maybe we're nearing the end of it. Hate those suckers.

Only one in New Mexico.......it's really dry.
Worse tick problem I have ever seen in California this year. In 30 years I have had only 3 or 4 ticks on my dogs. This year I have found dozens on each dog over the past couple of months and decided to clip both sheepdogs down short to spot them. Nasty, evil little beasts— I even found four on myself, probably ones that were transferred from the dogs when I was going over them to spot the little monsters. They were all dog ticks, but I found one smaller tick on Toby as well, which I believe is the kind that carries Lyme disease that is uncommon but sometimes found in northern Calif.

I got most of them while they were still crawling except one on poor Charlie's private parts had started to balloon up before I caught it. I thought I found another a week later but it turned out to be one of his nipples that is dark pigmented. I don't think he much liked it when I tried to grab it with some forceps.

It has to be the wet spring and cool weather we have had on the west coast up until this past week. Hopefully 100º dry days will put an end to the little buggers.

Don't worry Richard, we've all been fooled by those little things. Now that my guys are getting older, some are sporting odd growths. Initially I'm pretty sure they are ticks until I got a closer look.
Joan picked 4 ticks off the dog during her walk last night, then found 8 or 10 more after she got home.

This is developing into a HUGE year for ticks. Reminds me of one year back in the early 90s where we picked about 500 ticks off of Jake, this year has got to be near 100 already.
They are certainly worse than normal in that I find them on my kids when they're out in the trees. But I have only found one on the dogs so far - Advantages still seems to be working well at this point (knock on wood)!
What a difference in ticks!

We are on a farm, surrounded by acres and acres of grassland and trees, and we have hardly any this year. We have had a total of 2 ticks this year. Both on Chewie - out of all 6 dogs!
One was on his head attached, the other crawling up through his chest hair.
And we are chemical free.....just some sprays of emu oil when I think they are at risk.

Todd says he has had several- all crawling and none attached. None for me - but I always get less than him 8)

Rather surprising for here, especially as us humans and dogs are outdoors a LOT.

This is actually less than average.
i'm in the uk so this might not be available over there, but we use advocate once a month, it's for lungworms, fleas, ticks, ear mites and various other parasites. it seems really good. i read an article a while back about an increase in ticks and other parasites somwhere in europe it was linked to an increase in strays, maybe that's the case or maybe it's a huge year for hedghogs and other cute little guys that caarry these tiny beasts?
Ema You know that mdr1 i was on about ?

Taken from advocate web site :-

Ivermectin-sensitive breeds

Studies have been performed to determine the safety of Advocate when administered to ivermectin-sensitive collies. Ivermectin-sensitive collies were treated with up to five times the recommended dose for three consecutive treatments at 28-day intervals.

There were no clinical abnormalities or adverse reactions observed in any of the dogs. Work carried out to determine the safety of accidental oral uptake of Advocate in ivermectin-sensitive breeds of dog revealed that 10% of the unit dose given orally resulted in no adverse effects, while 40% resulted in severe neurological signs.

As with any product containing macrocyclic lactones, special care should be taken with Collies, Old English Sheepdogs and related breeds or crossbreeds, to correctly administer the product. In particular, oral uptake by the recipient and/or other animals should be avoided.

My vet won't even give me advocate .
holy moly good job you saw my post, it never even ocurred to me. what do you use for fleas and lungworm? that's scarey stuff.
Frontline for fleas/tick (when needed) otherwise mine get daily doses of "Billy No Mates".I'm all for the more natural approach

Lungworm isn't bad round here yet so we don't treat yet. Just make sure your vet knows about the gene (you can get the pup tested now to see if it has the gene if you want) and whatever he gives you read up on it before you give it. :)
i have the article you sent ready to print off and give him, think we may have the test done just so we know, (sorry for hijacking the post)

Not hijacking at all - we've had a few posts on the MDR1 testing!
Getting the word out is important.
We've done the test as well :D
and how are your beautiful babies? must be easier if they are clear, (is that the right wording?) thought i was being helpfull but nope i'm causing trouble lol

Dawn does that you mean you just spray with emu oil to prevent ticks or after they've been bitten. I tried Avantrix II on Butch and he had a bad reaction so we are not using anything at this time and so far the ticks haven't been too bad.

Yes, we are normal/normal...which means they are not at risk due to genetics.
I really avoid chemicals all the time anyway, as often as possible.
We don't use them on our lawn, our fruit trees, our garden either.

I love that there is a test available for the MDR1 , it just makes things so much more helpful. :D
glad to hear they're "normal" my mother in law is a bit of a hippy so no checmicals here either, i think sixpence is my future babies fairy godmother she keeps stearing us straight :) this is a fab forum for info, i'm asking questions all the time lol.
off subject again so back to the TICKS

I use it like a grooming spray before we go out. That way it gets into the coat better.
On my smooth coated dogs I just mist it over them and give a quick brush to work it in.

Simon is plagued horribly by biting flies - for some reason they pick on him and will bite until they draw blood.... :(
I have a marigold oil spray I use on him. It's mostly the dome of his head they bite, so I would hate to use a spray chemical spray on him there every day.
Todd was skeptical, but he is a believer now - it really works!
It is for flies, mosquitoes and gnats, and a horse product (but OK for humans too!).
http://www.EQyss.com is the website.
Thank you Dawn for the info on the natural sprays. My breeder also recommended the Emu oil.
Is the MDR1 tests a sticky note anywhere here on the forum?
Robin
I do have emu oil, got it for grooming but will use it on both Butch and Tripper, thanks for the heads up.
We've found 3 on Walter this year already... hadn't found one on him in years previously! None on my city dogs, but we haven't been up north yet. And yes, the mosquitoes are already horrible :(
Has anyone heard of using Skin So Soft by Avon, for keeping mosquitoes away?

I don't know about the mosquitoes, but it's claim to fame is for gnats!
Thanks Dawn,I knew I had heard it was used for something for a natural remedy.
