Suggestions cleaning dirty, wet beard.

Hi All,

We feed our dog a raw food diet. On top of that, he's a drooler. Mix the two and we constantly have a wet, soggy, smelly face (like cheese smell, it's that gross). I have shaved him three times in his short five years (reluctantly) but I can't stand his wet face rubbing up against everyone, my furniture and the area rugs. It's a constant mess.

I see all these lovely pictures of full coats and their faces are clean. He only lets us wipe his face with a dry towel and that doesn't do much. I am sure kibble would keep him clean but I can't change his diet.

Any tricks or grooming techniques I could use to keep him (and my house) clean? I am sure he hates having a wet chin all day, too. Actually, he could really care less ;)

Thanks so much,
t.

You can get a water bowl called a road refresher bowl. It just allows a small puddle of water so the beard stays dry, i wouldnt have any other bowl now.
You can also try putting a little cider vinigar in the water, this can stop the staining and its a really good thing for the digestion, joints, coat maybe even help with the smell.
Some people use corn starch on the beard to help dry it.
What abour just shaving under the chin too?
I found an easy was of bathing the face is to put a bin liner on them like a bib, then stand them on a duck board (like you stand on when getting out of the bath) but put it in the bath, now you can bath them regular without getting the whole body wet.
Hope this helps good luck
I trained Chewie to stand with his head over the side of the tub and I wash his face that way.

I don't have a hand held shower attachment ( :( ), but I use a large plastic glass ...pour water over the muzzle and cup my other hand under to help saturate it. Then squirt on a little whitener shampoo, suds it up, and rinse w/ the glass several times until all the water runs clear. Amazing amounts of food and grime come out. It takes us just a couple minutes, as he knows we are usually going somewhere or doing fun stuff w/ a clean face :D :D

When he was littler, we played tug with the towel too to make it more fun. :D
Thanks so much and well noted. I will try all of these suggestions. I never thought of a bib.

Is it disgusting what comes out of their beard when you wash it? Grosssss.

I have shaved Wilbur's chin for years now but it the smell is still so revolting. Poor Williebear :( I think it may also be uncomfortable for him to constantly have a wet face.

As for standing him over the tub? He stands over the tub to drink from it on the occasion he can sneak upstairs but he makes me stand about 3 feet away from him before he leans over for a drink. He's sly, this one.

All my italian dish towels have turned into dog face rags. Grrr...

Ah well, what can you do?

Thanks again,
t.

Hi Ron,

I actually joined when I first got Wilbur but forgot my user name. I check this site regularly and actually found some great photos of my baby my husband must have posted well, almost five years ago!

He's batting me now with his huge polar bear claws. I need to let him out...story of my life. I wonder if anyone else let's their dog rule their lives? Do you know how much 'Dog Whisperer' paraphernalia we have around this house? Thank goodness he's so cute or else... :wag:

Cheers,
t.

HAHAHA! Actually NO! My husband did and he ruined them all. If they don't have pomegranate juice on them, they are stained from Wilbur's face. I also had to teach him not to wash DISH towels with underwear. So, I have two dogs in the house who need training.
Send me an email at ForumWebmaster@oes.org and I can look up your username, and then you can get a new password! Include any email addresses you or your husband may have used. We'll figure it out.
