male or female?

Hiya, my husband and I are planning to get an OES puppy in the near future, we have two boxers and a pomeranian at the moment, (all female) and are hoping to have a baby. After speaking to a few owners and breeders about which would be best for us we've been left none the wiser really and wanted to get a few more opinions. We were told at around two years old girls tend to get soppy but boys are more playful, then someone else told us boys are more clingy and girls more independant. I've heard time and time again that dogs are more affectionate than bitches but I know this isn't true of every breed. We want a lovely friendly happy family dog that loves a fuss and cuddle. Any advice and opininions would be gratefully recieved.
thanks in advance.

i always had females for over 20 yrs and now i have 2 boys they to me seem more loving clingy and seem always happy ..just my opinion
ditto

Boys are forever trying to please you and seem to come up with more antics than the girls. Each morning it is the boys who give the first kisses, the boys wake me up, the girls come up later. The girls are a bit more predictable.
I have a girl who lives to please us and is very affectionate and goofy. So maybe it just depends on the dog and not on the gender?
I am partial to the boys! I grew up with mostly all female animals--my parents preferred the girls and always enjoyed our pets--but...

We acquired our first male sheepie in 1973 because we did not have a choice of gender at that time. He was such a wonderful dog that we have continued to choose the males and probably will stick with them. My persian kitties are all males as well. Just love the goofy--loving--laid back boys!
One of my breeder friends stated it quite simply once: Girls are smatert but the boys are sweeter.
So I've been agonizing with the same question and I decided to go for a female purely based on size.
No one has disagreed me so far, but sheepies are already big dogs, and I think I would have a difficult time with a 100lb male with anything, vs a 60lb female. If I had a choice between a 60lb male vs an 80lb female, I'd go with the male.

Should I change my tactics?
Joanna - just check out different breeders.

Judi's Harry and my Chewie are both wonderful 60-something males - and they are great! :D

Everyone doesn't breed big horses of males!
These smaller guys are so much more handy and fun :high5:

I agree with Dawn.

Zeke is around 57 pounds and is easy to handle.

Don't worry...she'll grow in to a true OES bitch ;-)

Bitches are my favorite, hands down. But they are more independant and demanding. Typically smarter too. By the time you hit age 2 boys are easier. And sweeter. I love my boy. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer but he is so SWEET I may need to have a token boy dog henceforth thanks to him.

I guess I don't have a preference but, to have to chose one it would be male!
I always say if Finn and Georgie were to ever get away from me Finn would run
back and wrap his paws around my leg while Georgie would run off chasing butterflies!
They are both very loving but, IMO females seem more independant as MD said!
I too, agree with Donner's Mom and Mad Dog's posts.

I agree!

Lily lives for me and goofiness oozes out of her. She does sheepie summersalts into my lap and brakes into my sister's house to get to me. She is a happy, silly little sheepie.
I have always preferred males over females. Just my choice.

Both my boys are around the low sixty something in the weight department too.
I'm really pleased I found this site. Thank you all so much for your replies, I think both my husband and I feel a lot happier to just choose a puppy rather than say can you just point out the girls for us. With two completely mental boxers a slightly crackers male OES should feel like business as usual :). Thanks again for your advice, I'll deffinitely keep checking the site I'll probably sign up once I'm and official OES mum :)
Can't wait for your puppy! You can stay around while you wait, you don't need to be an owner, just an admirer.

I have a 60 lb girl and a baby holstein size male. I love the small female. 12 years ago I was put off by it as all my other dogs were 100 lbs-ers. Now that I'm 12 years older, that small size is a lot easier on my body than the big guys.
Hehe, we're not to worried about size really, we've been looking into breeders and the ones we like most don't seem to have the huge size difference of a lot of the ones we decided against. Still you never know my husbands parents are both short yet he and his sister are tall. With two boxers, one that's old and crochety one that's thick as mince but soppy as anything, a stroppy little pom and hopefully a baby ssometime soon it's all about temprament for us. We've been speaking with a lovely breeder and she thinks a girl my fit in better as we have all girls at the moment, a boy may , "Try his luck." I think my teeny tiny pom would soon set him straight tho lol. I think my husband would prefer a boy as he's so out numbered. I think I'll sign up later today, but I won't be able to call myself someones mum:( aah well, it'll be great for us as we have sooo many questions still :)

That sounds wonderful!
Hee Hee I'm imagining your family all moving at FF speed in the morning.
:wag:
LOL, we had to get a male when our females didn't get along. Poor guy took it from both bitches. He was an St.B so was large enough to handle the "abuse."
Ema - where are you located?
growing up, there was mom & 4 sisters. then there was wife and two daughters. yah, like i was gonna say yep let's add another to their team. :cow:

needless to say, i luv bitches too. :wag:
hiya, we're in the UK I'm guessing my terminology gave me away that and mum instead of mom :P
Hi Ema .Where abouts in the uk ?

I'm in the North East .I like the males best :D

Forget the last question i have just seen were your from :D
We had been leaning towards a girl but I think boys have actualy had more supporters. Thanks everyone for the replies so far. Hopefully we'll find out soon if the mating was a success :)
Hi Emma . I know you said you have found a breeder but i'm just curious :)

Have you been round the dog shows looking at OES or have you just been looking on the net ?

If you have just looked on the net my advice is to look round some of the shows to actually meet some of the dogs.Do this even if you just want a pet.I did this with the last dog i bought.

I don't want to know which breeder your looking at !!!!!!!!!

But there is a lot of internet based breeders in the uk just doing it for money and putting out litter after litter from different bitches .
They usually have hip checks but no eye checks and they are selling pups for good money.

It's just a word of warning by someone that has been through it (once bitten twice shy so to speak) :x
hiya, we have actually been looking online. The first breeder we've narrowed it down to we have spoken to people who have had one or more dogs from and are ecstatic with thier dogs the other has provided the first with puppies. Both hip score and eye test, We really appreciate the warning, is there a way I could PM you a quick question?
PM sent :)
I agree with the girls are smarter, boys are sweeter generalization. That said, of my boys, they actually are pretty smart about things they care about. Sherman is just sweeter and less confrontational. When he really wants to, he can manipulate Sophie just as well as she can manipulate. His easy going nature makes it less obvious. But he tricks her into going outside without him if he wants alone time with humans. Or if he intuits there might soon be food involved.

Sophie is the only girl dog I've had. She is of a much more dominant mind set than any other dog I've had but she does learn and respect hierarchy. She knows who the Queen B is around here and it's not her. As much as I complain about her attempts to take over the world, she does try very hard to be a good girl. Also: she has a strong preference for men: she can fool them better than she can women. Sherman doesn't deliberately misbehave, but he's more led by his own impulses to play or to sit on your lap, even if you don't actually have a lap at that moment in time.....He is the sweetest dog I've ever had, period.
I dunno, I simply can't imagine anything being sweeter than Mady, she is the sweetest thing possible. :aww: :aww:
Hello!

This is technically my first post on this forum, however I just wanted to jump in and say that I agree with Mady's mum and dad! Mady is truly the sweetest canine that I have ever met. :aww:
Mady is responsible for convincing our family that an OES would be a great fit for us! I have since met a male OES as well and I would have to say that I would be happy with either a male or a female as they both seemed very sweet and playful.

Future OES mom :)
Yes Sheepdogs can be quite the charmers.
Way to go Mady, you did your job well.
Good luck in either a male or female.
Robin
Welcome Magda!
finally found the right breeder (thanks to sixpence) we fell really lucky our new puppy will be born around 15th 16th july, we're sooo excited will keep everyone updated, think we might go for a boy if possible but we're hoping one one chooses us :)

Don't get me wrong: Sophie's plenty sweet---when she wants to be. Especially with men.

She's pretty much down to bossing Sherman around and mostly he'll let her. But once in a while, he's just had enough and lets her know.
I am so happy for you!

Thanks for the kind words! I know that Mady and Winston worked their charm on you and your family (Magda's boy is the one getting snuggled in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=33198&p=447090#p447090). Magda works with me and will soon be posting her own sheepie pictures. It is SO MUCH FUN watching her anticipate the arrival of her very first sheepie. Makes me want another one, which should be a surprise to no one!
