Gigi starts PT water treadmill Monday

We have an appointment Monday for the first visit/consult for Gigi's water therapy and/or massage...
She had her grooming (see photos). now in a short summer doo which i thought would be better for the water therapy.
I don't know if they do the therapy on the first day.
Do they?

Gigi...get your flippers and goggles ready....you are going to love the water~~ and it will make you feel soo much better~~~
:clappurple: :clappurple:
Can't wait to hear how your first visit went~~~~ :excited:
How exciting!

We did therapy the first day. We talked, did measurements, and got the water/pace/time calibrated. The first few sessions really are about getting those critical factors calibrated. Here's to a great start though! Oliver loved his therapy, hopefully Gigi will too!
:clappurple: :clappurple: Have fun Gigi. :clappurple: :clappurple:
 yea, Gigi! You'll be the hit of therapy class.
They look so happy in their summer styles! :hearts:
You go pretty girl! Good luck with your water adventure!
Am I going need goggles? Wetsuit?

I do not think Gigi is going to like it.
She'll get use to it the wet stuff and look forward to hearing how she is going, dont forget to take a camera and get snaps of her on the water treadmill.

When we took Mady to the water therapy place, it was VERY mellow. The pool was warm, but not hot, quite comfortable. First they lowered Mady onto a bench in the water and just stood chatting to her, very relaxed. Then they brought out a squeaky toy and got Mady's interest. They held the toy out a bit and Mady left the bench to get it. It was all done very slowly and very incrementally, if that makes any sense. They had a camera that filmed under the water. We weren't doing it for therapeutic reasons, but if Mady ever needed it I would be very comfortable with the process. I wish Mady and I could go with you and Gigi!!

Gigi isn't using a pool (if I understood correctly) - she's using an underwater treadmill. It's like a plexiglass cube over a treadmill. Dog walks in the door, door is shut, and water filled into the "cube" until the desired level. Then the treadmill starts and the dog walks, partly buoyed up by the water.

Oh wow! I wish they had that for humans-what a great low impact weight loss idea!
Dawn gave a perfect description! Here are some pics of Oliver doing therapy:

Frankie took to the treadmill pretty quickly. He does 30 minutes on it 2x a week. Sometimes we have to put water wings on the water level bar on the side of the tank. He figured out he could put his back leg on the side and walk on 3 legs.

Have fun Gigi.

Yes it is the underwater treadmill as the photos shown above. I bet I still get wet. Wish I could go in with her in water. It would help my hip! I have a bad right hip too! Dr wants to do hip replacement on me too! NOT I am doing the same ,well not exactly, as Gigi. Water exercise, yoga etc.

I will have a camara. This should be an experience Thanks for all your thoughts
Have fun Gigi !!!!
We were just about to get into the car and the phone rings. It was the vet's office that we were going to for therapy. Their treadmill broke! So we could not go today. The vet is hoping to get it fixed this week.

Arghhhhhhhhh!

The only vet that does this therapy is right around the corner from me. However they will not allow me in the room with Gigi and they want her there at 8am. She could be there all day waiting in a crate for her turn. No thank you.

I hope the vet I prefer gets it up and running this week. or I have to drive one and half hours to Orlando.
Well thats a bummer. I was thinking about you guys tonight when Frankie was doing his time on the treadmill. We went through a period when ours was breaking down all of the time. Hopefully it's fixed soon and Gigi can start her workout.

Darn. Hoping they'll get it fixed soon so Gigi can begin her therapy.
I wish we had something like that here for Panda...
Just checking to see how GiGi did yesterday, I'm sorry that she is delayed-very frustrating. Hope she gets her day soon. Give her a hug from Charm :hearts:
Ours has never broken!

You should road trip to MN

But, sorry you are delayed.... :(
Yeah, road trip! Gigi in water therapy and maybe they'd let you use the doggie pool!! Probably not, you know you might contaminate the water for the dogs

The time will come when hip replacement seems like a good idea. Vast majority of folks do GREAT with it.
Oh--Bummer! I was checking to see how she did on her first appt. Hope it is fixed soon and I don't blame you for not leaving her and wanting to be with her!
Dawn - ok I am coming! It is so darn hot here! Would love the see the farm! Give Chewey a big kiss!

I have not yet heard from the vet's office that has the broken treadmill. If they do not call me by the end of the week, I will be going to Orlando for gigi's therapy. The therapy in Orlando is at the ortho specialist's office. It is just a lot of driving twice or three times a week. But Gigi is worth it.
It's 60 here right now, going to mid 70's today.....actually cooler then normal, but nice not to be sweating. Can always add a sweatshirt layer!
Come on up..... :D
carol road trip to see chewie i am in
I am in Suzy. Let's go!

I called the vet with the treadmill and it is still not fixed! How long does it take. Maybe they are not in a hurry. I am.

However I was speaking to a GSD trainer who has lots of experience with hip dysplasia. She suggested a therapist that comes to your home and does the therapy in the pool. Anyone heard of this? Is it as good as the treadmill?

Not really, no. Don't get me wrong, swimming is good for them. But it tends to work the front more than the rear, whereas with the underwater treadmill you have the best of both worlds: water to both add to the work load, yet help cushion the joints, along with more a more even work out.

You can always check with the therapist - s/he may have ways of compensating for that which could make it worth it. Sure would be a lot easier for you to do.

How poor is her muscling in the rear? Is it very uneven (more muscle loss on one side or the other)? That should give you some indication of how much work you have ahead of her to get her back in shape. If it's not too bad then maybe swimming will be enough.

FIXED YET????????????????????

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A REPAIRMEN FOR AN UNDERWATER TREADMILL..

I mean, there can't be that many broken at one time...or can there be?????

kisses to that sweetie~~~~hugs to you~~~~
   ~~~~ :ghug:
Kristine. Gigi's muscling is good in front and rear. She is mostly muscle. That is good.
I spoke with her specialist this morning. He said the swimming will be good for her now. But to also use the treadmill when it gets repaired.
I will meet with the therapist that comes to the home and see what I think.
I am afraid if bogey sees Gigi go in the pool, he will want to. He will have to be away at the time of therapy.

How long does it take to repair the treadmill. I would think it could be done in a morning. will see

That's excellent! Since she's mostly muscle you're obviously already doing a great job of keeping her fit. if she was overweight, or flabby, or had uneven muscling due to compensation for being in pain, the underwater treadmill would be a godsend. In her case it might be that just adding good old fashioned swimming to their exercise regime might just be a nice thing for her and Bogey both.

Kristine
Yes Gigi is in great shape. She is small 66 pounds I wish I were like her. Long legs, lean and all muscle. The dr said she can slowly get back to her normal routine and see how she does. Since it is too hot now to walk, the swimming will be good for her and and bogey too. The dr also stopped the meds and wants to see how she does without them and activity. Of course he wants therapy. I am also going to try chiropractic and acupuncture. She is not showing any signs of pain now but she has had limited activity.
