Getting a real fence

Moe has not gotten thru the electric fence in six months until..last nite. Scared by fireworks he escaped..he was gone for fourteen hours. We were frantic. Thank heavens my husband found him scared ,thirsty and with pads in very bad shape. He must have injured his feet running or digging..he had enough oomph left to get up from a field and get into a neighborhood. Right now it is a struggle to stand. But vet gave him shot of antibiotic and painkiller and said he should heal in five to ten days. It is very hot here right now..so thank heavens we found him when we did. So now I am getting a standard fence. I could not stand to lose my baby. It is worth the expense. We are all exhausted but back together as a family.(Although Moe is a little upset he cannot play soccor for a while) :plead:

How scary! So glad you found him.

I am also not a fan of electric fences. While walking our first OES, we passed a house with a Golden Retriever and a Jack Russell Terrier outside in the yard, on a busy street. The Golden saw us, and ran to us on the sidewalk, giving a huge yelp. As I struggled to maintain order, the Jack Russell followed, also yelping. I soon realized that they both ran through an electric fence to say "hello". Then they both started running down the street. I went to the door and knocked, but no one answered, so I ran home and grabbed my car, hoping the dogs would be okay. I found them a few minutes later, and they both jumped in my back seat. :phew: I took the electronic collars off, as I didn't want them to get re-shocked, and drove the dogs home. Luckily, someone answered the door.

In our new neighborhood, there is a Rottweiler mix always running loose, who has almost been hit numerous times. Everytime I bring her home, they are amazed that she went through the electric fence. Really? I have brought her home at least five times.

Also, a neighbor's dog (Yorkie) was taken by a coyote while it was out in the yard with an electric fence. The fence might keep your dog in the yard, but it doesn't keep other dogs or wild animals out.

Give Moe some extra hugs from us.

I'm really pleased you got Moe back - I can only imagine what you must have gone through. It's a different world over here, we don't do the electric fence thing, but I can understand the principle. I'm pleased Moe's safe and well.

Nik :)
I am so sorry your Moe got away, for not long, thank God. I'm sure all of you feel like you've been through the ringer. I hope all are feeling better.
I'm so happy Moe is back!! I'm another who is not a fan of electric fences. I've seen too many smart or paniced dogs overcome them.

Even now, with 12 year olds, I have to watch them around an open fence. Our MO has been known to get excited and head out, or Jack comes out to get into the car for a ride.

I was just looking back at costs when we put in a fence....... :twitch: and that was YEARS ago! Yes, expensive, but it is our dogs' lives.
So glad you got oe back! But I will say, a real fence is wonderful! We installed a fecne around our property and I ahve ti tell you, the dogs love it and so do I! They can run around and I don't have to worry about them getting out - but you do have to remember to latch the gate. I think you will love a regular fence and you will be relieved as well. Peace of mind knowing you can let them out and even if you run inside or are not with them , the CANNOT get out! Get the fence...you won't regret it.
Glad you got your baby back and soooooo glad your opting for normal fencing now.

I am not a fan of eletric fencing at all, does not stop stray dogs wondering onto your property even if your dog is contained by the system.

I've heard of many stories over the years where dogs have gone off the property because the system has failed miserably or other dogs have wondered onto the property and caused problems with the dog contained by electric fencing :|

So yes good on you now to opt for normal fencing now :D
I have both , a chain link around the back where Dutch can be left by herself (not that she ever wants to be by herself)and invisible around the front where she is only allowed when I'm with her but I'm not completely comfortable with the IF tho .
