Thunderboomers

I know and have experienced dogs who are very scared during thunderstorm, but lukily my two are not.

We had various warnings out tonite but it seems that everything went around us. We did have some lighting and thunder though. I was sitting in the living room watching T.V. with no lights on. Dogs were just laying about, not bothered. I noticed a bright flash of lighting and said to DH that this is going to be a loud one. It started out as a low rumble but built to a widow rattle roar. Next thing I know, Gar is pressed up to my side and Simon is in my lap.

I know you are not supposed to make a big deal of it so I just pet them and continued to watch T.V. A few minutes later we had another window rattler and the dogs picked their heads up but settled quickly. The next big one had an ear flicker.

I consider myself lucky.

Mine are all cool with it except Harley.
I doubt I can change the habits ingrained from his 1st 11.5 yrs before he came here!
He just shakes and slightly drools and tries his best to get under me and hide. :(
I keep hoping that the fact that he is virtually deaf will help...but he still sees the lightening and it triggers his response. :plead:
Oscar doesn't mind at all!!!!!! :D Just one of those deaf dog perqs. He will ask to go out and go potty in a torrential downpour with thunder AND lightning!

I know dogs have selective hearing.....I just wish mine would turn their's off when storms come instead of coming to me quivering and drooling.
Neither of mine do well in thunder storms...I usually keep a keen eye on the weather and try to get them out before hand. We then go to bed, and they go in their crates with a sheet over the sides of the crate so they are a bit sheltered from the lightening and thunder. I also put some quiet music on for them....Bach's Rescue Remedy is good to use too...although I usually use more than the recommended four drops. I use the non alcohol formula.

How we hate thunderstorms and fourth of July!
diane, same for my Gigi - we hate storms, July 4 and New Year's Eve! i go with Gigi in our bedroom and play easy music.
Bogey can sleep through anything.
i've never had a dog upset with thunderstorms before.
I think all the fireworks going off in Mexico, and the Gundog blank shooting inside the building as Checker's would be doing his down and back in the BIS ring every day for 4 days have added to this.

This past week he has come RUNNING up the stairs at the first 'rummble' and before i know it i have to watch he doesn't land on my middle area where my incision was/is.

There are Thunder Jackets i have been hearing about (not sure if thats the correct name) that people are having wonderful results with...
I almost gave him one of the anti/anxiety pills the vets gave me for him that are all natural. not cheap but poor guy/me..........and we are JUST beginning our real thunder boomer season.
Violet never used to react to thunderstorms until 2008 when we moved to a new neighborhood at the 4th of July time. Since then she gets frightened. She looks for me and sits next to me, but prefers to go in the bedroom, lay on the floor between my bed/bed stand, also wants the tv on.
Dutch doesn't react at all to thunder or lightning. She is quite content to sit on the porch with me and watch it all :D
