Hair growth

Had my baby boy clipped yesterday he had a few matts with his hair changing to his adult coat. He's come back short and I want his long coat back. How long will it take to grow???? :(

Most people use 1" per month for the first 4-6 months and then slowing down a bit as a "rule of thumb" when regrowing a coat. I'm not convinced that coat grows back quite that fast but certainly by 6 months your Bobtail will have a decent coat and after a year it will be visually close to where it would have been without clipping (assuming your dog is about a year or so as your description "baby boy" indicates.

You have a "grooming reset" right now so this is a chance to ensure both you and your Bobtail get into a good grooming routine which will prevent him from getting re-matted as his coat grows out. So even though he doesn't "need" much grooming right now spend time grooming him and get used to using all your grooming tools if you are less experienced than others.

Good Luck and enjoy your grooming time together.

Depends on the dog & the pedigree too. I have one boy who grows coat as if he were one of those play-doh machines that cranks it out. At 13 years old, he still grows it fast but not as dense. He would have been competitive in the classes at about 6 months after a shave down. My others I would say take take about 11-12 months be be in full coat.
It also depends what you call 'full coat' I cut my boy's coat down to 3" 3 years ago and now he's at 15" in places, I consider him just about full coat.

Although I confess to not knowing what the heck to do with all this hair apart from brush, brush, brush

Can you even take him for a walk with that amount of hair and not come back and find twigs, leaves, small bushes and the occasional stray neighborhood kid caught up in his coat???? 8O :twitch: :twitch:

Wow! 8)

Are you still planning on showing him?
