Max

We received a call from the South Valley Shelter that gave us two prior rescues .(Phil and Philo) asking if we would take a new boy turned in by an owner. Owner said they have a new job, must move and can't take the dog.

Meet Max:

Skinny and very neglected. I have my doubts on the "Job/move" story. We have had him 28 hours and so far so good. My guess on the real story, cute puppy, no idea how to care for a sheepdog. When we picked him up, he smelled like he had been sleeping with the stock. :twitch: We use our first rescue as a smell comparison. Until Max, none of them had met that level of stench. He had to have a bath before going to the groomer.

this is a photo of the inside of Max's right ear. The hair most people pluck had grown into a 4" dread lock. It was still attached to the ear canal hair.

What a face

What we know so far, he's approximately 3 years old, gets along with other dogs, is working on housebreaking, and is a sweet boy. More to come. :wag:

Applications for adoption can be submitted through Colorado OES rescue.

How heartbreaking to see him, poor Max. Thank you for his rescue and TLC. His life is changed forever :hearts: :clappurple:  :excited: :clappurple:
He has the sweetest face.
I'm sure he feels better already. :hearts:
Very nice clean up job!!! 8)

But suggest you be careful with the emphasis on too skinny. He could use just a couple three pounds and some better muscling at the most from what I can tell. My rescue dog is built roughly like him. She doesn't have much bone, it's true, just like him (look at his front legs for instance), and she keeps herself very lean but well muscled. Not an ounce of extra fat on that running machine. She can give some sighthounds a run for their money.

Place him with a woe he was "starved" emphasis and the new owners will feel compelled to fatten him up. He actually loooks very nice and trim to me, just a little underweight. Most of us keep our OES overweight, self included if I don't watch myself. Little girls have some fluff right now they need to lose and I'm not talking hair. This breed should be kept on the lean side for longevity.

Looking at him I'm actually thinking agilty potential if he's reasonably sound and his hips and elbows are good, why not? Check his rear though. The lack of muscling there isn't balanced with his front so there may be some compensation going on.

PS - my first OES came from a farm that raised cattle and paints and she lived in the barn. I've never encountered anything like that stench since and hope I never do. We drove home with all the car windows down even though it was December and snowing 8O  8) He must feel soooo much better.

TY Kristine, I was thinking the same, he's not skinny--yeah ribs are visible--he's just under muscled.

Chewie and Maggie need to start a sheepdog health retreat to build muscle 7 different ways.

Don't you just love Max's tuck-up? Very sexy. Bet he has the the girl dogs swooning

The photo's don't do justice to his under nourished state. His backbone looks like a set of brass nuckles and his pelvis reminds me of a milk cow. His muscle tone is poor at best. He is very fine boned and won't carry a lot of weight when he's back on his paws.

Max looks very much like our Margie, same build, face, and ears. She arrived in a like condition, no muscle and the same slope between the pelvis and tail. With Margie we could see right away that she had or would eventually have issues with hips. Her hind feet look like she is in 1st ballet position when standing. Margie runs and fields balls everyday and looks like a million dollars! We keep all of our guys on the thin side. Buff and Marge just did a well check and the Dr. was impressed calling them very athletic (I only wish I were in the same shape). I don't know how long we will have to work with Max but as of this morning, he started the same excercise as the rest of the gang.

On a side note, the potty training is going very well! No accidents today!
I am sure that he will be pawfectly fine with your TLC!!!
