Our new puppy is here!

We got our little guy a week early! His name is Hudson and he is already 9 weeks! We picked him up on Saturday afternoon. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how to...(any ideas)?!

Thanks to the people that answered my questions before Hudson arrived. We love him already!

I do have a few new questions....

1) He sleeps in a really strange position. He sleeps on his belly with his paws out in front and his legs tucked under (like a normal dog) however, he flips his head back so the top of his head touches his back. If you can imagine that...it's hard to explain. But its basically like he's bending his neck completely back and he rests his head on his own back. At first I was worried, but then I realized it probably doesn't hurt him since he puts himself in that position and then falls asleep, however his breathing gets loud and kind of funny sounding after he falls asleep like that...worth a mention to the vet?

2) This is a little embarrassing, but he eats his own poop....various sites said it might be malnutrition or a vitamin deficiency? Is this a normal puppy thing? I started just walking him on a leash to prevent him from even getting to it, but he's pretty quick.

3) We've decided to crate train him and I have been waking up every 2 hours the past couple nights to take him out...however he still has accidents in his crate. Then today he was taking a nap, then he woke up from his nap for a half a second, barely lifted his upper body with his front paws, peed, then laid back down (in the pee) to sleep.....does this mean crate training isn't going to work, since he isn't particularly upset about laying in his own pee...and practically peed while laying down?

4) Our breeder said that OES have VERY sensitive digestive systems and she doesn't give them anything edible except food at breakfast and dinner. What do ya'll do for treats? She also said she feeds him 2 cups at 7am and 2 cups at 3pm everyday and thats it. He also only gets water 3 times a day, and it doesn't get left out for him to drink whenever. Does this sound right to everyone? This was not how we fed our Bernese Mountain Dogs (they got 1 cup 3 times a day when they were puppies, with lots of training treats throughout the day), so I was wondering if this was a normal behavior for OES.

Thank you so much! I have SO many questions about Hudson! I have only had him for 48 hours and I'm already worrying over everything!

Congrats on Hudson, great name!! We have a five month old puppy, Charm. I can't give you a wealth of advice, but will share what worked for us.

I fed Charm three meals per day in the beginning and just recently decreased her to two. She gets treats and kong kibbles between meals too

I always have fresh water available. Even when little, I would usually forget to take it up at bedtime.

As a baby, Charm would get kibble for her treats. Very very gradually, I added milk bones, pet tabs, etc. Their little puppy tummies are tender.

Hudson is still very young, perhaps that's why he soils his crate? Do you have him in a small crate or sectioned one? I believe the advice is to limit the space to just enough to turn around and lie down. I started Charm in a little area and expanded it as she maintained bladder control. As far as eating feces, our vet said it was a nasty habit. We broke it by cleaning up promptly, scolding and using her leash.

There is a sticky in the Picture section at the top of the page. Ron gives step by step easy to follow directions for picture posting. You can even make your avatar! Looking forward to seeing your beautiful Hudson!

The best advice I can give is to make certain Hudson gets plenty of sleep. And you rest
when he does. Puppies are tiring.

Again, welcome to you and Hudson!!
Thank you for the help!

I did section off the crate so he has just enough room to turn around and lay down. At first I didn't have a blanket in there because a lot of books said they will be less likely to have an accident if they have to lay right in it....unfortunately for us, Hudson doesn't seem to mind :? So I ended up putting a thin fleece sheet to soak up some of it so it's not all in his fur.

I am going to try feeding him 3 times a day...i'm thinking if he eats more, he might not be as hungry and eat his feces...we'll see though!

He hasn't been sleeping in that weird position, so maybe it was just a reaction to being in a new environment....

He's quite a biter so far...our breeder told us to grab his snout and gently squeeze....we tried that but he seems to think we are just playing with him....so I've started just giving him chew toys in the mean time.

Other than the potty training, things are going smoothly!

We had quite a few accidents in his crate last night still. :(

Here is my sweet little boy!

P.S. Thanks for the tips on uploading pictures.
OH..Hudson is sooo very cute!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

When I brought Heart home, I think I called my breeder soo much I thought she may disconnect her phone... Question, after question. The breeder is the one who knows your pup the best right now.

In the meantime, it sounds like you are doing everything right.

NOT getting any sleep.....BEING the chew toy.....CLEANING up after him.... :D :D :D :D :D YEP!!! doing everything right!!!

When Heart began to chew on us, I think it was more for comfort and to ease the pain of teething. I purchased a 'teething bone' from the pet store. You have to freeze it and then give it to Hudson. Heart really loved hers. I had 2 so one was always ready to go.

I also like the way you are redirecting his snips and giving him a toy. He will learn very quickly what you are trying to teach him...

IN the mean time,,,,,use us for all the support, comfort, and suggetions...BUT...PLEASE don't forget to relay the cute, terrible, hairpulling stories that make puppyhood soo special!!!!!

We have all BEEN there ~~DONE that....but secretly would love to do it all over again!!!!! :twitch: :twitch: :yay: :excited: :excited:

:ghug:
Adorable puppy!!
The smile on your face says it all.

Cute puppy :hearts:
Thanks everyone! We are loving our little guy.

We have been having an EXCEPTIONALLY hard time potty training him. It's only been two weeks but I have already been feeling totally overwhelmed. He literally has an accident every 10 minutes...I took him out constantly but the second we would get in from going potty (he would go outside) he'd have an accident inside! Sometimes in the 10 minute span that we would be outside, he'd pee 3 times!

I took him to the vet for a check up and the vet was concerned about a bladder infection. Turns out...that's what it was! My poor baby has had a bladder infection this whole time. The vet said it might be from the lack of water he received at the breeder's house.

He started his med's today, so we're thinking potty training will go much easier now.

I'm seriously annoyed with the breeder though...the vet asked if we rescued him from a puppy mill because his symptoms and behaviors were consistent with puppies he's seen that were rescued from mills. He also said that might be a hint as to why Hudson sleeps with his head up and touching his back....maybe because he didn't have room to put it down. :(

I'm happy he's home with us and on the road to recovery. :)
I'm sorry to hear that Hudson may have had a less than stellar start- but don't let it bother you too much. He's with YOU now, and you can make the decisions in his life to get him on the right track! My two girls also came for a WAY less than reputable breeder, and we had similar problems- bad urinary tract infections that came back several times, and the poop eating. Poop eating means that he likely lived in a less than clean environment, and is accustomed to eating, and in my dogs case. playing in their own feces. Give it time, and you can over come even these things.

Puppies are VERY bitey; its completely normal. I read that a dog's mouht is like our own hands, and no one has taught your little bundle of joy to "look with his eyes, and not with his hands" yet. Do a search for articles on "bite inhibition" training. What we learned was that when your puppy nips you, you yelp just like you were another puppy. Not so loud that you scare them, but not quietly either. The puppy will stop the behavior. Don't play with your puppy for about 5-10 seconds, and then resume playtime. Every time your puppy bites, yelp like a hurt puppy and stop playing. Eventually, your puppy will put two and two together, and realize that 1) they are hurting you and 2) fun stuff stops when they hurt you. This worked really well for us; today our dogs have amazing bite control, and what we refer to as 'soft mouths'.

Congrats on your new puppy- you're going to have quite an adventure to look forward to!!!! :excited:
He's just ADORABLE
He's really big and hairy!! , beautiful !! :aww:
Aska (my 1year old female) had problem with her bladder to, she's wasn't fully potter trained until she turned 6 months :twitch:
The wet couldn't find anything wrong with her...
We never found out why, maybe bladder infection :?

But enjoy your puppy days with Hudson, before you know it he'll be a big sheepie ! :phew:
Take alot of pics and keep us posted :clappurple:

Its not unusual for dogs to take a full 6 months to be 100% potty trained. All of the training books call that "normal". My girls both had urinary tract infections, and while Tonks was trained by 6 months, Luna took until 10 months.
