Question for a breeder I'd assume..:)

Hi everyone.

Thank you again for all of the helpful info I've learned since joining this sight.

My questions today are about coat color.

1.) I have read about the "acceptable" coat colors for oes. HOwever...I'm having a REALLY hard time finding pictures the deptict the differances. In my rookie mind "gray, grizzle, blue or blue merle " are all VERY simular. Can any one clarify all of this for me...or refer me to some pictures?

2.) All pups are black...is there a way to determine what color their coats will be when they mature? (Don't get me wrong..I'm not saying I ONLY want a "grey" for example. OES are all beutifil. I'm just curious..for curiousity sake. Danes for example..if you cross one coat color with another coat color you can only get a certain coat color..they can not produce others. Is this so with OES'?

Thanks for any help...I am especially hoping to have the whole "coat Color" confusion clarifed for me. :)

Hi- as for pup coat color- yes, all puppies are born black and white. All coats should be white and "shades of gray" as it were, as the dog matures, the coat will change from black to gray areas. a brown area is very rare, and a mark of bad breeding- you shouldn't really ever see a brown and white oes. The colors you mentioned all indicate the way the gray(s) are interspersed in the coat. I know there is a link somehwere to see the coat colors, I wish I could find it... As for genetics, I'm not an expert, but I know certain parents have likelihoods of producing certain types of coats- but not every parent can produce a litter with every coat type.

In addition to the answers you have recieved, no, there is no way of predicting what shade of grey a pup will grow up to be....
I now think Dancer's coat appears to be blue merle, as the grey areas are interspersed with black and white hairs throughout, giving her a grizzled appearance. Sky's coat has not yet changed enough for me to know, and Dancer is not yet mature either at 16 months. I've been told by a breeder of 50 years that final coat color is never really. They are black, then lighten to a shade much lighter than they will eventually be, then around 15-18 months they darken again, and lighten again around 3 years of age. They then often darken over the years as they get older.
So in my opinion, it's a wait and see thing, and it is ever changing anyway....
Wow guys--super helpful! I had no idea that the coat changes so much! I know there are coats (yorkies for example) that slowly turn silver as they age...I assumed such was the case with OES. Looks like I have much more to learn!

Thanks for the link Zahra. VERY HELPFUL!
My Beau is almost 8, he went from black/white puppy to merle and now is starting to get darker again.
