Brown ball in ear

I was just checking my one Yr old OES's ears when I noticed a brown ball in one about the size of a large marble. What is it? Could it be a build up of dirt, can I try and cut it out myself? It's quite soft. Has any one ever seen something like this? I check his ears every week and it wasn't there last week.

Most likely it is a mixture of wax, blood and hair (yeah, I know...UGH! :( )

I'd pull or cut it out, but you may also want to have the ear checked for an infection, especially if it smells bad, or "yeasty".

The inside of a dog's ears (our vet has told us) grow "outwards", pushing crap out at the same time...so that ball may have been there for a bit...just deeper in.
Thank you! I will make an appt at the vet on Monday!
I would not try to cut it not knowing what is inside the "ball" if it is part of the ear
you would have to calling the ER vet...ears bleed bad!
Like Laureal said thought it is probably the combo of goo!
Is it waxy and hairy? Could be a goo ball, but I'd also urge caution unless it is a hematompa, ruptured blood vessel that forms balloon-ears....more often found on the flap, not inside the ear. Could it be a tick? yeooow, that give me creepies :twitch:

Although this is right up my alley...I love pulling ear goo out
It's likely just a waxy, dirty mat.... a pair of hemostats will pull it out no problem.

tee hee so do I. We had only had Summer a few weeks and I found what I thought was a lump in her ear on further investigation wiping with a baby wipe I thought it looked loose. It was a lump of waxy debris and just kept coming out. The vet said sheepies have dirty ear holes. Funny thing is its her black side that gets more mucky than the other side. I find thornits ear powder invaluable a little bit of my fingers and the debris just comes out. She quite likes it!
I had a wax ball come out of one of my girls ears pretty early on. I now make sure to be much more regular about cleaning them!

Charm's black ear is the "evil" ear for gunk too, her white ear is always less dirty. Most be a trend, wonder about Dahlia's??

Hope the brown ball is nothing serious.
Butch's black ear is his dirtiest one too, sounds like that's normal.
I don't know that the color of the ear matters- Tonks has 2 black ears, and they are always very clean in comparison to Luna's one black and one white. Tonks also NEVER gets ear infections, while Luna has had a couple in three years. Go figure.

I am with you all....I have found that to be true too!
Odd :lmt:
Just back from the vet. Vet said she'd never seen anything like it. They took him downstairs and got it all out, said it just kept coming! It is infected so we have drops for that plus cleaning both ears twice a day! Poor thing! On a more positve note, maybe he can hear better now so he'll start listening?? Probably wishful thinking! On another note I had him weighed and he is only 61lbs. Vet said he's healthy but his weights seems low for a one Yr old male? He was the sickly runt of the litter that I couldnt resiist because I was afraid nobody else would want him! Not such a bad thing to be on the smaller side I suppose! Anyway, thanks for all your responses, they helped a lot!
Now you just have to keep up on the ear cleaning. I check ears just about every other day. Usually not any problems but occasionally one of the dogs with start with the gunky stuff over night. :(
Hudson has one black ear and one white. His black is always yucky and that's the one that gets infected.

We call it his evil side. Although lately he's been evil all around.
Good luck keeping up with the ear cleaning. Bingley usually has a yeast infection flare up about once a year, and it's always partly because I'm so bad at getting those hairs way down in there!!! On a side note, Bing has a black ear and a white ear, and when he was a pup the black ear was the evil one - now it is the white one! Maybe because I overcompensate for the black one?? :lmt:
