Food for dogs with allergies

Okay Okay... I'm back.

I was hoping for new answers from those who have dogs with allergies since many of us change food a lot ;)

Help! Background again to what she has tried.

Science Diet z/d ultra worked for awhile ...but the reason why we changed came back to haunt us. GAS. Not just any guess ...more like an explosion of rotten boiled egg smells ALL day long.

Wellness (many types) worked for a long time. This may be something we try again. She IS presently on it now but that's b/c we were running out of SD and we wanted to get her off of it.

Going to Petco tomorrow. Give me something to try that I can get there. Nutro (never never worked), Iams, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance (horrible on Yuks), ...and Pro Plan (worked for a few years) have already been used.

I am not sure if I should buy another bag of Wellness or not. She's itching and at her feet again and this was with the sudden increase in gas which wasn't there for the longest time while trying SD, so we're pretty sure it's the food.

Also, Yuki was on missing link. Is that still good or is there something better for her for joints.

Have you tried Blue Buffalo Basics- Turkey & Potato or Longevity? We've had real good luck with it. We tried to put Kobuck back on Wellness but it gave him loose poo again so we had to find a different food. It was trial and error but the Blue Buffalo Basics was a good choice for him. We had to find a new food for Darby too (low fat to keep her lipase level right). Trial and error again and we found the Blue Buffalo Longevity was right for her. I need to find another brand though to rotate them with.

If there's any foot staining (reddish between toes or between pads), ask your vet about trying Douxo Chlorhexidine PS shampoo and wipes. The shampoo lathers well, washes out easily. I think the instructions say to wash 2x per week for 3 weeks initially. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then wash it off and dry thoroughly. The wipes can be used in between the toes and pads. But it's important to get the dog on the right dog food too.

Try her on something in the protein factor she has not had before. Eagle pack Holisitic is great there is Duck and oats blend to try a fish blend one both for dogs with allergies. I've known people that have had success just changing the protein to one they have not had before, like venison, duck, here in OZ roo or even with Jaci I think bumbles is having ostrich.

Also with the missing link, great stuff but also full of heaps of other stuff that she might react too, so for her joints I would just add a glucosamine/chondroiton supplement to her meal. You can get it in "powder form" from a pet shop or you can buy the capsules at a human drug/health store and open them up and sprinkle on her dinner. I would not be loading her with missing link just keeping it basic till she settles down. You can a couple of times a week too add 1 teaspoon of "Cold Pressed Flax Seed Oil" as well for the extra omega oils factor too or fish oil but not every day till she settles down a bit.

Missing Link is a wonderfull product but with Yukis allergies might be just way too much in it for her to handle at the moment.
All the info I needed. Haven't tried either of the foods you guys mentioned, so I'm going to give those a go ...and look for a pill tomorrow!!! Thank you. :)
People always blame corn, wheat etc on food allergies but the truth is that it is frequently caused by the protein source most frequently fed.

Other misc., things to consider is eliminate flaxseed from the diet--this is a stealth allergen. Fed 100% salmon or krill oil daily. Too much Omega 6 found in grains and grain fed meat sources can be an inflamation cause. Salmon Oil or Krill oil is higher in Omega 3 that balance out the 6. Omega 6 to 3 ratio should be under 6 to 1.

The Blue Buffalo Limited ingredient idea is a good place to start. Also California Natural is a good elimination/limited ingredient diet.

Have you changed any cleaning products recently? You never know when the manufacturer has changed something.

Best thoughts I got for you.
Sorry I had to get the phone. And then it took me forever to write this.

I agree about Missing Link... someone told me it was great for dogs skin but not this dog's skin or maybe not if the food he was eating was really causing the problem.

Yeah, Bumble had his first visit with a board certified veterinary dermatologist and professor down at MSU in mid-February. 155 pounds of ostrich have so far gone through the dude and I have no idea how many rutabaga's we've peeled. (He's eating 12+ cups of fresh home cooked food per day to maintain his svelte 92 pound weight. 8O )

I think the novel fresh protein and fresh carbohydrate approach is the best way to go to determine whether there's a food allergy. It should be something the dog has never eaten before. Remember though that sometimes food can contribute to itching but there might also be an environmental factor... so sometimes symptoms may improve but not totally go away.

For Bumble... the special diet is the sole source of food along with plain water... not even a crumb of other food. Heartworm preventative must be topical (Revolution) because oral hw meds often have beef or pork flavorings. This also means no vitamins, no fatty acids, no chew toys, no rawhide or animal parts, no tooth/mouth care products... nothing but the diet + plain water. They also had him on antibiotics and an antihistamine... still on antihistamines. With multiple pets, I saw that the water source can't be communal because food from the mouths of other dogs does get into the water. Toys are also washed more often (mouthing by other dogs that eat other foods).

Hopefully a new kibble will get her straightened out. :D If you want to take a look at the food trial guidelines and details for BB, I'll send it to you in a PM. Don't try one of these odd home cooked food trials though without first talking with your vet. There are so many things that can cause a dog's itching.
Jimandthom I agree with you on a change of "Protein" that is always the first step in helping allergies, something they have never had before and starting from scratch as they say, on a lot of studies too, Wheat and Corn are a no no with dogs with sensitive skin conditons, "Allergies". There is a lot of data confirming dogs with allergies "Should not be fed products with Wheat or Corn" in them and to also change the Protein to something they have not ever had before.

Flax seed oil or flaxseed Joahaeyo here is some info on that for you to peruse for Yuki if you want to try that or not. I like the oil "Cold Pressed" in its natural form and also the seeds which I bake into bikkies for treats. Never heard of it being an "anti" to dogs with allergies from all the info it helps. Krill oil is great too as mentioned, probably better then the fish oil for the omega benefits in there meals, along with support for the hips and joints the glucosamine/chondroiton supplement in the long term prospect of large breed dog joint support supplements.

Before switching foods I'd go pick up some pro biotic capsules and start putting 4 or 5 in her food every day for a week or so. I'm guessing it will help her skin and tummy issues.... may not be allergies at all, may just be her natural gut flora is out of balance....

Good idea :bulb: forgot about good old fashion digestion
I second about Missing Link. Kahlua's itching has gone down to once or twice a day after I stopped giving her Missing Link when I found out one of the ingredients in Missing Link is Beef Bone Powder. She is rotating between Orijen's 6 Fish and Earthborn's Great Plain Feast (Grain Free with the first two ingredients being Bison Meal and Peas) I love Earthborn. It is kind of new in the market. High quality but very good price ($40 for 28lb bag) Her snack is frozen dehydrated food from Honest Kitchen in kong and dried sweet potato.
