rescue

I have a beautiful 4 year old rescue girl we adopted in March,2005. She has been checked out by the vet and is very healthy. She is sweet and very velcro. I have noticed at bed time she grabs a stuffed toy and suckles and does the kneading thing too. Has anyone else seen this type of behavior in a dog?

No, but I've seen a cat do it. That usually means they were seperated from their mother too soon - I'm not sure if that's the same with dogs or not.
She's a rescue and will exhibit these "needy" behaviors for up to a year. It takes that long for her to know you are her "forever" home. Imagine the trauma she's been through. She'll be fine. Remember, lots of touching does wonders.
Sofa is a rescue doggie, she still does that from time to time. Her last fixation was over a rubber chicken and that was due to a false pregancy, she took the rubber chicken everywhere!!! She bathed him at night, fed him in her pet bowl and gave him water from her bowl.
thank you. She is such a luv. She gets lots and lots of loving and touching all day as I work out of my home. I know nothing about her previous life... All I know is I'm having a great time spoiling her.
Bentley does that with a stuffed soccer ball. The only thing we can think of is that toy has been with him all the way through his journey from original owner to us. He seems to use it to calm himself.

I'm glad you asked. We always wondered why he did that!
Dancer does that to the sweatshirt I happened to have been wearing the day I picked her up from the breeder. She will find it whether it is in the clean or dirty laundry, drag it to her cage and cuddle with it and knead it. I never wear it anymore, lol, it has become her shirt.... it's that arctic fleece stuff, so I don't know if it is the material, or if that just happens to have fixated in her mind as something that once had her mothers smell on it.
