Persistent UTI?

Winnie was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection in February. She completed 2 weeks of antibiotics and it seemed to clear up. Then it came back. The vet was surprised, but prescribed a different antibiotic - again for another 2 weeks. She was better but then a week after she was off the antibiotics, she started leaking urine again. Took her back to the vet for another urinalysis, and sure enough, the UTI was back. This time, 4 weeks of antibiotic. Completed that. Then, a week after being off the meds, she was leaking urine AGAIN. And, yes, the urinalysis came back as a UTI.

Now she is in the middle of another 4 week course of antibiotics - only I am going to call the vet tomorrow because unlike the other times, this time Winnie is still leaking urine several times a day. (Usually it stopped after 7-10 days of the antibiotics. And, yes, I did go ahead and complete all the meds as directed.)

The vet had said after the second treatment that she was going to do a urine culture in addition to the urinalysis to find out what bacteria we were dealing with. I thought she had, but found out that no culture had been sent out. Now, I am going to ask that they do a culture as soon as they can (I think Winnie will have to be off the meds for a couple of days for them to be able to take the culture).

In the meantime, I am looking for any advice from anyone else whose dog may have been in this same situation? A UTI that just doesn't seem to go away or returns after antibiotics are stopped??? What were the results?

Someone suggested putting Winnie on a UTI diet. Anyone know anything about that??

Thanks in advance!

Poor Winnie :(
I don't have much advice but, have they suggested giving cranberry pills too?
Good Luck!
:ghug:
Mattie just got over a UTI a week ago. Our vet recommended giving her Cranberry pills. He says that there really is proof they help stop the bacteria that causes UTI's. Someone on the forum also recomended Apple cider vinegar with the mother. I did some reading on it and am now using a table spoon of that a day in there food also.

Hope you can find some relief for you baby.

Might be worth talking to your vet about the advisability of further diagnostic testing.
Ultrasound for example. Winnie may have a bladder or kidney abnormality that predisposes her to UTI's. The vet should be able to give you an idea of the probability of complicating factors and the cost of further tests, so you can weigh up the cost/benefit ratio.
