allergies

so....Bella has allergies. She scratched at her eye so badly she opened a big sore on it. So she's been on a food trial for seven weeks now, we are feeding a limited diet of bison and sweet potato and her itchies have seem to gone away, no meds, but I'm concerned that the limited diet had sweet potato as the main ingredient and not meat. My vet, who is a wholistic vet, has encouraged me to feed her raw and I'm considering it. I am interested in those who feed raw, especially those who have had problems with allergies. I fed her Innova before, and rotated with Eagle Pak Lamb and Rice, so I have no idea what is causing the allergies and worry that raw feeding includes a lot of chicken. I'm willing to put the effort into the raw feeding. any input?

Valerie raw feeds Maggie and Harry......perhaps you could PM her.
Poor Bella, sorry about the boo boo around her eye... :(

When I adopted Kahlua, she came with severe itching problems. Her previous owner thought she has allergies. I immediately started her on grain free, limited ingredient diet. She was on Nature Balance' s Bison & Sweet Potato.

Even though it turned out she was infested with sacorptic mites & flea, I still continue to feed her grain free limited ingredient diet just in case she also has allergies.

To battle with the sacorptic mite, boosting her body's immune system helps a lot. So I continued to search for good quality grain free dog food. I finally settled with Orijen's 6 Fish and also The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated food ~ Zeal as topping. Kahlua's coat is doing very well. Her scratching is almost completely gone.

The Honest Kitchen offers this product that you can use it for raw feeding

My vet did a skin scraping to check for mange initially when I took her to the vet for the scracthing issue and she was clean for any mange issues. My vet is so awesome, she didnt even charge me for the skin scraping. I really want to start them on raw feeding. I'm just worried about the chicken, though it may have nothing to do with her allergies....maybe just the the processed food thing? I don't know. Don't know where to start.

There used to be a raw feed OES group too but I think it fell from disuse.

Raw feed isn't that hard, you just have to be organized and informed. In addition to the raw protein, you will need raw veggies, etc. Not a biggy, but supplements are also needed. That's where you'll need guidance. I just don't remember all I used...fish oil and ???

As for the feeding, all the veggies and fruits went into a food processor and were goooed together. Dogs loved it! Meat was chicken back, wings, pork necks, fish, turkey necks. The small soft bones (raw!) are no problem. (Never cook bones because they dry, break and get caught.) Initially you can mush the meat in there as well, but isn't necessary.

First few times you hand off a chicken back or wing you'll hold your breath but the dogs figure iit out immediately. I always had trouble with tripe for the intestinal stuff, even the cleaned stuff did me in, but you should use the uncleaned and lets not go there, stinky. And the benefits to the teeth are GREAT! Such white teeth!

What was amazing was their poop, not smelly and smaller in volume. I'd definately go back to it if I had one dog, maybe two, but at the time I had seven and stocking chicken wings and backs in the freezer became difficult and I didn't want to purchase another freezer!!

I always forget about Honest Kitchen. While not quite true raw, it is close! Friend fed it to two of her dogs with digestive troubles and Judy commented the food, when wetted (work?) smelled good enough to eat for her dinner.

Two schools of thought: make the change slowly or jump right in. Arguments for both.

As to the question of raw chicken, it is a concern. Some say freeze it first and feed partially thawed. Others say it doesn't matter. Questions of hormones in the chicken? Go organic.
