Going grey -- not my OESes

Some of you know from Facebook that I have decided to stop coloring my hair. What a liberating feeling! I had to get it colored every 3 weeks and really within one week it needed it. I have thought about it for a long time and stopped coloing in February and cut it short in March. This Friday i have an appt for another cut. Trying to grow all the color out. It is a process. But I found a great group of women that are all going thru this transition also. Interesting site with lots of information and friendly knowledgable ladies of all ages. We are called "Silver Sisters."

They even have a convention in Las Vegas! Here in Florida we are having a "mini meet" after my haircut on Friday. It's a fun group. Of course I show them the sheepies to show how beautiful gray can be.

I'm at that awkward stage where if I don't color my hair, I don't have that lovely silver look but something more closely resembling: dead mouse.

When I am sufficiently silver, I plan to stop the color, grow it all up and wear it in a long braid or wind it up in a bun. My hairstylist will absolutely have a fit. It's a few years off. Until then: we're bff.
Good for you!! Sounds like a fun group!
Oh yes my hairstylist for 13 years did not like the idea. So I switched to one who has experience with the transition. Now I drive an hour and a half to him but at least it is just once every 6 weeks for now and later it will be twice a year.
I love the time and money I am saving!
your hair looked great last time i saw it.. i need to go to your guy where is he orlando
I have been doing the same..taking a long time as I don't have layers...almost there! So great not to spend so much time coloring and like you said a week later the gray started showing through no matter what you colored your hair. If you have gray hair the color you don't like...have it colored or highlighted to a color you do...still won't have to color as often as it will blend with your gray. For years I did the painstaking process of frosting my hair and now it's natural!
My hair is 1/2 dark blond and grey so I get hi and low lights and it all blends well for about 3 months. Couldn't afford to nor do I want to be running in every month to get it died. This works for now until I know what it really is going to do. My grandmother had beautiful white hair from the time I remember her and she wasn't that old but mine doesn't seem to be going in that direction.
  I bow to you lady of courage! I thought I was there too, but not quite. My hair has been breaking off so had it chopped off. I purposely let the roots emerge before I did to better judge the next step......stop coloring. For a few weeks I had that "dark" shadow inside and it wasn't too bad. IF the dark would have remained in the back where I couldn't see it, maybe, but no, right at the crown! Closer to face is more silver than ash-yuck color. Finally grabbed the color and back to very light blonde again. I think for me the key is to down color the blonde instead of this halo effect.

Enjoying the short hair!! Wash and fluff, voila. Still learning to "love" bangs, grrrrr.
I love the look of silver hair. My mother went gray in her thirties, and I never saw her with any other color.

My gray is driving me NUTS, however. its not the color...its the change in texture :? . My black hair is slightly naturally wavy, and VERY thick. The lovely silver areas that are coming in are KINKY! 8O  They basically stick out in every direction from the darker background...it looks ridiculous! I always have a weird silver halo around my face now, that makes it look like I just crawled out of bed without brushing  I suspect Im just going to have to wait it out  .

Looks like a fun group.
And I'll remember this when my % of grey gets up there..... :lmt:
My very good friend was going grey through the years. Her hair was pitch black. She was constantly dying it and dying it and then one day so forget it and started to let it grow out. Of course the grey roots looked terrible next to the pitch black har so she cut it all off SUPER short. Didn't take long for her to be conpletely grey without the roots and today, she is sporting basically the same hairstyle she always had but its all grey. Her hair looks healthy and just fantastic and she looks very attractively sophisticated!

I am now 53...always dying and dying...I am on the verge of letting the grey go myself! But my hair just isn't as nice as her's!
Linda and Laurel - it is greyt! isn't it!
i colored every three weeks but really needed it every week! who has that time!

Ashley - how do you know your hair is not a beautiful white or silver? There are also blue shampoos and conditioners that help the sparkle. Just like for the sheepies! hahahaha i am 54 been coloring for 20 years! I am afraid to add up all the cost (and time) One woman on the site, calculated her costs at $32,000! yikes! probably close to that for me!

I had dark brown hair. Colored it lighter brown then highlighted it blond. never liked it. Most of my silver is in the front and crown. not much on the back. I have cut it short to make the transition quicker.
