What should I feed my 1 year old OES? Acana vs. Orijen

I read that foods that are a blend of lamb, beef, beet pulp, wheat, corn, and potato are recommended specially for OES's.

My vet also recommended a diet of 28%-32% protein. I know about the myth of high protein diets. But my vet told me that high protein does not cause kidney problems but if there is a pre-existing problem you are unaware of it can aggravate the situation.

Any thoughts?

Should I feed my 1 year old OES Orijen Regional Red or Acana Ranchlands or Acana Grasslands?

We had lots and lots of trouble with our male with food and digestive issues. We have been feeding Orijen Six Fresh Fish Kibble and have had lots of good luck. When we got our new OES pup (related to my first) we started her on Orijen checken puppy and then got her to the same Orijen Six Frsh Fish. They both do VERY well on the food.

I think Acana is the canned version. Can't recommend one over the other just that my dogs do VERY well on the Orijen Kibble - Six Fresh Fish variety. They did well on the chicken variety too.

I might add. whatever food you decide on, make the swithc very very slowly. Start with only a quarter cup f the new food to the old food, keep it that way a while and then add the new food slowly until you are fully transferred over. Orijen was voted a Best Dry Kibble a few years in a row. We recommend it highly!
Acana and Orijen are dry foods both made by the same parent company. I feed Tonks and Luna Acana as it has no grain, and is supposed to be from very fresh food sources in Canada. The girls do AMAZING on it. They used to have very loose stools on a regular basis, and don't anymore.

One warning- because the Acana is from such fresh food supplies, sometimes they run out. Nothing is ever frozen, so if they don't have fish, they cannot make the fish variety of food. My retailer warned me about this, so I feed the girls either the grassland or the prairie. Ranchlands is relatively new, so I haven't tried it yet.
I rotate foods periodically, and I was looking for a nonchicken primary protein food for this switch.

It was suggested I try a new food made by Nutro. It's a grain free, limited ingredient line. I chose the lamb and potato. (As Allison mentioned, availability of some sources can be an issue, and lamb is a pretty stable and readily available source.)

It was a great food transition - 2 days for 5 of the dogs, 3 days for 2 dogs. We mixed 50:50 for the transition days, then were full strength on the next day.
All 7 went perfectly. :cheer: :cheer:
No gas, no loose poop, and went to really nice little formed stools. (the previous rotation food was not grain free - and actually there were 2 previous foods - hence the different number of days finishing up the old foods).
This involved one very active adult OES, 1 foster OES, 2 senior bassets, a rat terrier, a coonhound and a lab...so lots of variety!
Even skeptical and hard to convince Todd is loving this food for our gang. :D
I second the Nutro option if you'd like something that's easier on the pocket. I just switched my dog to that and she's doing great.
I too recently was choosing between Acana and Orijen. I was looking at their Pacifica vs 6 Fish formula. I ended up choosing Orijen because the calories distribution in Orijen is 36% from fish protein, 22% from fruits and vegetable and 42% from fish oil (none from carbohydrates) whereas for Acana, the distribution is35% from protein, 40% from fat and 25% from carbohydrates.

I remember reading from somewhere that dogs' health will be benefited more by being provided more calories from protein and fat and fewer from carbohydrates.

My dogs are only on the first 30 pound bag. They are doing pretty good so far. I don't see any drastic difference in them yet but then again it has only been a couple of weeks. One of my dogs had severe skin condition, so finding a top quality food that can help promoting healthy skin and coat is very important to me.
Yes, I have a problem sometimes in the year with the Orijen ^ fresh fish dry formula and them not having the exact bags I want. I get the 30 pound bag and it seems that size is hard to get so sometimes they ship me two 15 pound bags. To avoid the problem, I order a bag as soon as I open a new one so it gives me time for them to get in stock. This food is not readily available at any distributor near me so I order on line at The Pet Nutrition Center in Ct, and they ship directly to me.

Its worth it to me. My dogs do great and have no loose poop problem since they started.
