old english x german shepherd - 1 now!! Hair cut?

Hello,

I used to post and ask alot of questions when Murphy was a baby here but havent been on in ages! He was one last week so thought id come and show you what an oaf he has turned in to :) He has been amazing; he is the calmest most well behaved dog ever, he hasnt chewed is calm and listens to everything :D

Anyway he is going really grey now, because hes a cross no one really knew what he'd be like and i still dont know if he'll go all grey or not?

Basically the main question i have now is the dust! He has such hairy legs etc that he just brings so much dust and mud into the house, its everywhere!! Would anyone recommend trimming his legs / tunny etc?

Here he is... as a baby...

And now...do you think he will go grey etc?

Thank you btw! :D

wow, murphy is handsome, must be enough sheperd too make him well behaved at a young age. anyone's call on the greying, but it could continue to lighten for awhile yet. i'll let the experts advise on trimming. i luv him the way he is. 8)
:aww: :aww: :aww: :aww:
A cutie~~~ a REAL cutie!!!!
I just seen your last photo of him all grown up and started crying! I have to go to my moms and post a photo of Cuddles, a dog I had about a year before my parents could afford to buy me my first purebred show OES when I was 11 years old. We rescued her from the Humane Society. She was also an OES/German Shepherd cross. Back in the 80's we did not know better and allowed her to have rawhide bones. One splintered, she went septic and passed away, despite all the efforts of our vet.

I will post the picture as soon as I get it from my mom. You are going to be amazed......they are twins!
Ok....I found a picture I had....it's not the best as she is laying down and is obviously not brushed out like yours is....but trust me....twins! Even right down to the white blaze on the chest. WARNING -TRY NOT TO LAUGH AT MY BROTHER AND I.....IT WAS, AFTERALL, THE EARLY 80'S!!!

Murphy is adorable!!
And Amber - you did have a twin there too :D

I would say you could scissor trim him up, but I really like the look he is in. Compared to the full OES coat, he is short and thinner (haired)!

I've had GSD's before, and the coat color usually does not change that much. The OES get the JR coat with is gray, then adult is usually a darker gray. So who knows what Murphy will do!?

Thanks so much for stopping back - love, LOVE your boy!! (and his brother is cute too!)
Very cute dogs, both of them! I know what you mean about the dust. I have recently just given up on ever having a clean house again and I feel a certain inner peace about it, finally! At any given time, if you look in the corners, you will find sticks, dirt, leaves and probably the odd squirrel! One trick that helps is to brush your dog on your front steps. Just a quick brushing to get the worst of the dust out before he brings it into the house.

that pretty well sums up life here too. Each run thru the door brings new wonders; dirt, dead grass, twigs, stems, flower petals (apple tree) and sometimes a nasty smell from the three-leaf sumac aka skunk bush.

You enjoy your dog but realize there is a trade off, the stuff they bring in. Legs are not the only collection location.....here it is also tummy........and tail on those with those fluff expensions, and the hips and sides from where they lay on the ground.......and the back and top of head for fallen objects.....usually leaves and flowers.
I do keep my oldest brush out on the porch where the dogs come in from the dog yard.
If it's me, I give the hairy one a few flicks in the offending areas and get the bulk of it out right away. Then sweep the floor/shake the throw rug every couple days.
If it's Todd - nothing happens, just complains about the mulch toted in.... :lmt:
Amber - they are really similar!! Even grey in the same places! Bless them!

Thank you everyone :) Im glad you all like him...Im a bit biased but i think he is amazing!

He has got a much thinner coat then an OES but theres lots of little grey hairs coming through so he looks like an old man but acts like a puppy 8) Its just around his legs and his tummy the hair is really long and gets verrrry dirty! The rest is all lovely and soft though; the groomer he goes to for an occaisional bath is always really surprised that theres never a knot on him.

Ive never met a friendlier dog, he is everyones best friend; dogs, cats, horses, humans the only thing is scary chickens...!! petrifying dont you know....!!!! 8)
Look at that face!  Murphy is just adorable.

I was going to recommend brushing the legs as well, but I would probably go ahead a scissor the tummy. I find that even taking as little as 1/2 an inch off can make a huge difference in how clean (or NOT! :D ) Oscar stays.

How much does Murphy weigh?

Thanks :D He has the most squishable face ever

Thank you thats really helpful. He weighs about 40kg which is maybe around 90lbs? He is really skinny though under all that hair... he doesnt eat much; not half as much as he should :(
Wow, he's bigger than he looks!

My SIL's Goldendoodle, Jordan, was a poor eater as well, and too thin. I had her give him Oscar's dog food, and he started eating pretty regularly. When he began balking at it, I gave her the canned version to mix in with the kibble. That was over a year ago and he hasn't missed a meal since! :D Turns out, he just didn't like his food that much.

Does Murphy's kibble have a canned version that you could add, to see if he finds that more appetizing?

oh my! I love him- what a cutie!

Trimming won't help with the dust. We've got a sometimes muddy back yard, and I shave my OES down every spring. It doesn't help with the dust one bit, and that dust is everywhere! I have a filtration system on our HVAC, I have a Roomba (that I don't use enough) and a cleaning service comes in once a week. There's STILL dust everywhere. But I have to say, I do like having that weekly cleaning service.

I've changed his food, I've added meat to it etc he's just not that interested. He eats just enough but he does need more. I've started leaving it down all day and he seems to just pick abit every so often but by the end of the day he's usually eaten more then he would have done. I know it's wrong as such but I'll do anything to get him to eat!

I don't think that it is wrong. My dog doesn't jump in and wolf down her food either. We leave it down and she grazes. Once in a while she will gobble it all up at once but mostly she will eat a bit here and a bit there. As long as she has eaten at the end of the day, and going to the bathroom regularly, I don't mind.
I have one exactly like him, mines name is jack!
I think Sprocket is trying to bring the wood pile indoors for us to use in the winter-he brought in a frog the other day-not sure if the frog was on him or got picked up but there it was, jumping around the living room.x
Tonks brought me a chipmunk once; or maybe I just caught her carrying it around. I thought "her face looks unusually dirty today" and then realized that it was actually a critter in her mouth! I told her to drop it and she sheepishly, but really gently laid a live, though terrified chipmunk at my feet. I can only assume she'd seen the cat carrying them around (dead) and wanted to try it too.
Its been a while since you guys posted , but 3 years ago i got my own, i want you all to meet Jack he is also OES and German shepherd

i got shocked when i saw the photos they look alike
A handsome guy, enough fluff in the face to make him adorable. Is his body clipped or is that natural?
