Hi,

I haven't been that far north myself but it's COOOOOLD in the winters but heard it's very nice in the summer. Kinda like Alaska, which has a close proximity in regards to location, so the climate is similar and perhaps has long daylight hours like Alaska too. Would be curious to find out if the Northern lights can be visible from there.

I know from geography classes there's a place in NWT called Toytayuktuk...try saying that three times..Hee hee. I may have even spelt it wrong. My childhood friend moved there when we were still kids and we wrote to each other for several years. She seemed to like it even after moving from a large urban area. I'd do a search on the net and see what the city has to offer as Yellowknife is the largest urban area in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Thanks I took a look, but so far I haven't found any detail on enjoyability of the place. I've read that everyone is bored so drugs and alchol are bad. I'm curious too about the rural area, living in the country. Can a sheepie love that life, can they be happy in that much cold.
Coooold, dark?
How far north are you Willowsprite, in comparison? How short are the days in winter? MN isn't too bad, but I'm as north as I'd want to go!

Karen :)
Well, considering it would take me 57 hours to drive there, I'd say it's pretty far...lol.... here's the mapquest results, me in relation to NWT....lol...

 that's what I get for not knowing my canadian geography!!! But hey- the directions tell you to cross through the twin cities, so you could come visit me on the way there

I realize once again just how BIG Canada is when I look at that map! I've only been to 3 cities there. The city across from Detroit (I can't remember the name of it!!), Vancouver and Victoria. We went to Vancouver during the World's Fair. That was a blast. Victoria is beautiful and soooo picturesque. I'd love to do more traveling in Canada but it's that "time and money thing" - not enough of either!
The closest I've been was probably when I was in Whitehorse, YT. Whitehorse is nice and warm with 19 or 20 hours of sun in the summer, but I sure wouldn't wanna be there in the winter!

I met a guy (ok, maybe "met" is a little strong, he was our waiter twice, 7 weeks apart) in, of all places, a "Boston Pizza" in whitehorse. He was from Yellowknife, and said that alot of his friends and acquaintences from Yellowknife would "stop by" in Whitehorse because there is nothing to do in Yellowknife.

So there ya go.

Here's a map, Whitehorse to Yellowknife.
Hmmm, looking at that map, I think that Edmonton (Where Joan and I also visited... great mall!) is closer...
Here's a map, Edmonton to Yellowknife

Yup! only 933 miles instead of 1612 miles!
Yes, it's quite the distance. Little worried about a pup living there. I reccommended a different breed.

Isn't our mall great, living here we don't notice the vast size of it. But do enjoy the water park, and skating rink. Our kids also love the amusemnet rides...geared for small kids of course. I don't normally do my basic shopping for 1 item there, I go to a smaller store/mall...easier to find parking.

It has alot for people to do, and worth a visit.
"Mall" is a little bit of an understatement for the West Edmonton Mall. Amusement rides for the kiddies? It has a full size ice hockey rink, a submarine ride, a miniature Mardi Gras/Bourbon street, a complete beach-like area complete with an enormous wave ocean, and a double loop rollercoaster INSIDE.

Oh yeah, there are stores there, too. Somewhere near 18,000,00012312,123129140 of them.

Parking was a bit of a hassle, even mid-week, especially with my SUV. I almost got into an accident in the lot, I was looking left while driving straight. I remember the guy as if it was yesterday... he honked his horn and yelled at me, but never slowed down... he could clearly see that I wasn't looking... why wouldn't he stop? He would have been able to, even after I looked towards the honking he would have had time to stop himself to avoid a collision. Some people are more interested in making sure that I understand I was screwing up than avoiding the accident, I guess.

The city across from Detroit is Windsor.... which is a hop skip and a jump from where I felt most at home, Leamington. :)
Oooooh, mall.... I'd drive 57 hours for good shopping :)

The city across from Detroit is Windsor. I can see it when I look out the window of my office-- well, the main window. I don't have a window in my office :(

West Ed (The Mall) has the highest amount of accidents and theft in the parking lot compared to any other area of Edmonton.

There is also now a shooting range and you forgot the casino and the fire breathing dragon in the theater area
And Starbucks...yum Caramel Frappaccinos'

Yes the parking is a pain, so I tend to pick what I need to do and park in that area. We've never had any theft problems, or accidents. But some people are real jerks about driving, but you can find that anywhere.

We hated driving in LA, and 8 lane (one way) freeways was a little overwhelming if you didn't know your exits.

They now have a huge Chinese Market Place, for grocery shopping. We go for skating lessons every Thursday night, grab some Tim Horton coffee and go home.

There is 3 movie theatre's too, and alot of restaurants. Now that the dolphins are gone, we have seals that perform. They are very fun, and well taken care of, probably better than any zoo.

Take a look at www.westedmontonmall.ca
Yeah! Windsor.....thanks for the memory jog!
