Non-Dealer Extended Auto (car warranty) Maintenance Contract

So our "New" (used) car has about 34,000 miles on it.

I haven't been a big fan of Maintenance Contracts on cars or especially electronics, but when we bought our last car new, we paid for a 100,000 mile service contract because Joan was driving about 40 thousand or 50,000 miles a year. I think we paid about $800 for it, and we wound up using it, saving on a $2,400 transmission job. I think that same job on this car would be $3,200 nowadays. We also should have taken advantage of it on a failed air conditioner, but schedule didn't permit several return trips to the dealer before the 100,000 miles ran out, then they refused the claim even though it was never fixed. We didn't fight it, and never had A/C again. :(

So the question comes: What company is a good, honest, reputable (moral?) provider of third party auto maintenance contracts (kind of like a car's extended warranty) for cars?

Anybody with experience, good or bad, with specific companies?

Thanks.

Just got the Clubman few days ago- we had a choice to get the extended warranty thru Mini (BMW) or Hendrick's Auto Group .. We went with Hendricks because it's nation wide - in case we move back East, had more coverages (theft & assets, tire and rims, etc) and it was about $1200 than the Mini's extended program. Hendrick is having a special on their warranties right now- might want to ask your dealership if they know of it... I dont have any reviews yet - not for another 4 years ;) Sorry if I'm not much of help.
My friend owns his own garage.
He deals with these extended warranties all the time.
Let me ask him which one he feels is the best.
Probably tomorrow.
I used to work at a GM dealer and the biggest problem was they didn't accept the aftermarket warranties. You had to submit your claim after the repair was done and paid for by you. The reason was that the warranty company always tried to get the repair done at a reduced rate. Check with the mechanic to see whether he will accept the warranty before he starts work.
Just talked to my buddy.
He says Guardian & Diamond are pretty good.

He also said to STAY AWAY from Penn and Old Republic. These 2 are terrible.

Hope this helps.
Excellent advice, everyone!

Thanks to the Unknown Mechanic too!
