Introduction from a Soon-To-Be Sheepie Owner!

Well, I've been "lurking" around the OES forum for a little while, and decided it is time to actually introduce myself. After years of having multiple animals of both the canine and feline persuasion (I used to be a veterinary technician, and took home all the sad cases!) our last furbaby left us last month. Parker was a beautiful kitty, who came to us at 3 weeks old, and finally lost his battle with kidney failure at the age of 15.

Knowing this was coming, and knowing we wanted our next furbaby to be a dog, we've done a lot of research, and decided on Sheepie. (This forum has been a big help in that decision, so thanks to all of you already!) We rent a house an acre of land that is in the midst of several hundred acres of farmland, so we have lots of room for exercise. The last tenant lived here for over 30 years, and we expect to be here at least 10 (and maybe 30!) Plus, my husband and I both work from home, so our new addition will have plenty of company. And today our landlords gave us the "official" OK to add a Sheepie to our household, so we can finally start contacting breeders. :yay:

As our search for our new addition progresses, I'm sure we'll be looking to your experiences to help us out. As much as my heart wants a puppy right this second, we're planning on taking our time, really checking out the breeders, and hopefully getting our healthy little one sometime in June or July. (I've got Sheepiepalooza 2012 on my mind already!)

We're in Chittenango, NY, a bit South-East of Syracuse. More livestock than people in our county!

We're very lucky to be able to work from home. We're hoping that being close at hand will help keep our little one's mischief to a minimum. (I know, I know. But we can dream, can't we?) :sidestep:
Welcome! How exciting the anticipation of a new pup. I like your photo of an empty bed, hope it won't be too long before you have a puppy to fill it.

Chittenango, eh? I just got back from Syracuse (Sorry, Mark - had OES with me but it was not a social visit so no time to hit the dog park)

You so need to contact Madeline Erickson. Her info, as well as other OESCA breeders: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ectory.htm

Just click on NY.

She's a very concientious breeder and I do think she may be planning a litter this year. And she is also the head of NYS OES rescue - just a superb person to know anyway you look at it.

Good luck!
Kristine
Another welcome from Wisconsin.

That empty bed struck me as sad.

Ditto Kristine here on her suggestion. Just remember that most of the time it's not possible to get a puppy when the time is "best" for you. Most reputable breeders don't breed often enough anymore to have pupppies available every few months. I know house breaking is alot easier when the weather is warmer & drier but remember there will be times over the upcoming years that you will be standing outside with your dog in the winter cold & snow when he is having a hard time navigating on ice or snow as he ages or times you have to take them out on a lead after surgery & most times that doesn't always happen at the best time of the year. So the small amout of time spent housebreaking a puppy is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things over the years. The most important thing is to be patient & get a healthy dog from a reputable breeder who is interested in bettering the breed & with whom you feel comfortable, who will be there over the life of the dog for when you have any questions.

My husband and I both work from home, and it made keeping up with our pups a great deal easier than a lot of the folks I've heard from that have to go to work and have to leave their new pup home alone during the day. I think you'll find that there's less destructive stuff due to boredom, because your puppy will seek you out all day long and keep you from actually "working from home". Heh. you're in for a wonderful time- congrats on the decision to add a sheepie to your lives!
Welcome from Alaska! :D

I work from home as well, and for me Sheepdogs have been ideal, since they :hearts: LOVE :hearts: to be with you 24/7. Of course, they love being underfoot, in the way and the center of your attention all that time too   ...but that ok, ya get used to it!

Good luck on the puppy search!

Believe me, we have no illusions about that. (Syracuse just won the Golden Snowball Award for the 9th consecutive year!) We learned to dress quickly for deep snow and sub-freezing temps with our Max. And after a lifetime of pets, and years spent as a vet tech, I know too well that challenges will come when they come, whether we're ready or not. We've nursed our previous furbabies through cancer, diabetes, kidney failure, Cushings disease, and more.

Our primary goal is for a healthy, healthy puppy, and we're willing to take the time to find the right one.
