Pedi Paws

Anyone ever use this Pedi Paws device for nail trimming? It was on sale at PetCo for 10 bucks and the sucker that I am bought it. It's simple enough to use...until I attmept to get the dog's nail into the tiny hole they have for filing. Maybe my dogs nails are just too thick? Or is there a trick to it?

I got a pedipaws when i first started grooming... within a week i gave it away!
Firstly i couldnt get a dog to go near it as you had to put the nail in the slot
I tried it on billy, he just freaked
I now use a dremel stylus which you just hold like a pen, its rechargable too
I have one- actually I have a few different kinds, all the
same concept. I bought my first one on sale too, thinking
if I was able to use it once I had gotten my money's worth. My
older dog Tucker will not let me clip his nails, (or touch his feet.)
But believe it or not he lets me file his nails. After 10 years of
trying everything I knew I was finally able to file them. It was a
slow process and we only did a little at a time, but I was completely
shocked - HE LET ME!! Anyway, I've been working at this for several
weeks now and we are finally getting to a workable length. We were
at the point where it was really beginning to effect his mobility. Thank
goodness I haven't had to deal with this with any other of my dogs!
What a stress it is knowing what the dog is going to do when you
get the clippers out! So glad we've got another way now.

YAY!! for you! I know the accomplishment this is. :clappurple:

No vibration of the grinder and no "snap" of the nail clipper. One of our vets told me years ago to file puppies nails in order to get them used to being handled so I started doing it with Meesha. Meesha http://oesusa.com/index.1633.jpg hates having her nails done (they clipped one too short at the vet years ago) but I've finally worked up to having her lay on her side so I can grind and file them. I did all of her nails this way for the first time last night.

Several months ago, I went to HomeDepot and picked up a pack of sandpaper... I think it's 80 grit? I cut it to length and fold it over a regular nail file, emery board... it seems to take the nail down a little faster than the regular nail file.

I use this Dremel Tool attachment for nails- http://www.peticure-grooming.com/Peticu ... _p_14.html . It has different size openings that access the sanding drum so it accommodates different size nails... I always use the two largest openings. I like the attachment because it catches a lot of the nail dust rather than having it drop all over. I've used it for a few years now. I didn't buy the grinder they offer because of the early reviews but the attachment works great on select Dremel tools. I touch up with a regular Oster grinder that I got free with a clipper- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... &subref=AA .

The rest of mine are fine with both grinders... even Bell, my son's Boxer puppy. (Putting eye drops in her eyes is a whole 'nother story.)
If I take the safety plastic cup off the Pedi Paws, is it like a dremmel? My problem wasnt with the sound of the tool. It was with the teeny hole to put the nail inside...
Yes, if you take the cap off you can use it just like a dremel.
Some of them are actually the exact same thing. I have a few.
I have 3 or 4 cordless, but I find the corded go faster without
bogging out. Some of the cordless aren't powerful enough and
if you hold the nail too tightly against the drum it will slow and
stop. I figure as long as I'm able to get Tucker to stand it, I use
the corded one as much as possible. That way I can do more toes
and get more done for the time. It will build up heat really quickly
though so I only do it for about 10-15 seconds before I switch nails.
I do recommend using an old sock with toe holes cut though, in order
to protect from wrapping hair up on the shank.

Well...I ended up trying to do a back paw nail with the Pedi paws thing that has the safety thing on it. You put the dogs nails into the little slot and then sort of file/grind down the nail. ...I think I applied too much :?: pressure from under. Never noticed a problem...My dog went out to play and came in. I am out there with my dogs so I didn't see anything unusaul happen. They were running and playing...No limping, no problem...

They come in and while sitting at my computer, I notice blood...Nail looks to be split. But ALOT of blood! A vist to ER confirms...Nail was split below the quick and they had to cauterize the nail bed to stop the bleeding! I think I caused it. I think I pulled the nail up with the Pedi Paws thing and then her run outside pulled the rest off

Its now two days later and she got the bandage off. But I am feeling so guilty! I think I will just stick to having my Vet trim the nails the old fashion way!
From what I've heard, the tool just doesn't have all that much power. You generally allow the grinder to do the work, you don't apply much pressure. It seems you'd have to apply a lot of pressure to split a nail or that the nail may have already been compromised in some way. I could see a nail splitting if the dog got the nail hooked in the slot/opening and the dog jerked their foot away. But it seems the dog would have reacted in some way if something like this caused the nail to split to the quick.

The one I use has round holes that access the grinder drum- http://untilyoufindme.com/NailGrinding1.jpg . I'm careful when grinding Meesha's wide, back dewclaws so they don't hook in the largest hole. I grind them most of the way, then file them with a nail file.

Anyway, unless the nail was hooked in the slot somehow or already damaged, I just don't see how you could have caused it.
(Glad to hear the bandage is off! :D)
Thanks Jacki! I was feeling guilty about hurting her! The bandage is off and everything looks good. A little wierd looking at a "toe" wih hardly any nail on it but other than that is its fine. She hasn't licked or mouthed at it and She is running and playing just fine. :clappurple:
Diane, I'm just reading this post now. Tiggy has had a split nail on 3 different occasions 8O Just the same as you've described the nail has split vertically and into the nail bed. There was lots of bleeding and Tiggy couldn't put her foot to the ground due to the pain. It always seems to have happened out at the park after she's been running and playing but it's not been due to hard ground or long nails. So I'm guessing it wasn't anything you did as well. The second time the nail bed became infected and it took months of antibiotics and foot washes to settle it down. So keep an eye on that toe for any redness or swelling and get on to it quickly if it looks inflamed or infected.

I did some research on the web when the second one occurred and found mention of fish oil helping so I started giving Tiggy a fish oil capsule every night before bed. She LOVES it and chews it up like a chewy sweet. The 3rd time the nail split I had run out of fish oil capsules and then had hip surgery and hadn't gotten round to buying anymore so she went without for a few weeks. I mail ordered some in straight away and don't intend to run out again. It may have been coincidence but the fish oil can't hurt and if it prevents problems its worth it.

Isn't it funny watching the action!

Vet suggested fish oil just as a supplement for dogs in general....or maybe she thought mine looked too...dry? scruffy? Only one refuses to play along with the fish oil capsule and I have to pierce hers and squirt on her food..what a bother. She'd much rather eat mackerel.
Yes, I have been watching it carefully for any swelling. It looks great. She goes to the Vet Tuesday for an ultrasound for something unrelated so he will do a follow up check. But, I think its okay. I have this spray called DermaCool I think. From the Vet. Sort of an anti inflamatory, antispetic type spray and ismeasy to use since its a spray. Since the bandage has been off, three days now, I wipe it with an antiseptic cloth and then spray with this spray. Seems to be fine.

But, than you everyone for making me feel better that it was not my fault!
I found this on youtube :-D

They make everything look so easy  However, my dogs were not quite as cooperative.

Nail healed fine and I think I will leae the nail trimming to the Vet like I usually do!
