I had an allergic reaction...

except I'm not allergic to anything.

This can go into the book of really weird things. At work, I went to lunch and had a Lean Cuisine Glazed Chicken. This is nothing new to me, I've had it before. When I was back from lunch for about ten minutes my face started to itch and I was sneezing. Then my ears started to itch, my scalp and working its way on down my body to my feet. Not just a regular itch but very intense and non stop. One of my co-workers said my face looked red and I looked in the mirror and my face was beet red(not from scratching). By this time I was one big itch. I went downstairs to the pharmacy and after talking to the pharmacist bought some OTC allergy med but it would take some time to work.

I left work about a half hour early and on the way home I stopped at Walgreens to buy some Benadryl. The intense itching was driving me nuts. I stood in line at Walgreens with my shoes off so I could scratch my feet. The clerk saw I was in distress and actually opened the bottle for me so I could take some right away.

The Benadryl did work and I got some relief but of course it makes you sleepy so off I went to nap.

Everyone kept asking me if I used something different to wash clothes or if I ate something different. I didn't. Nothing was different. I can only think of the Lean Cuisine. Something in that kicked off the itching.

I still have a little itching but nothing like it has been. I will take some benadrly before going to bed. I still have more Lean Cuisine Glazed Chicken in the freezer but I told DH he could eat it...I'm not touching it again.

That sucks... I go through this quite often in addition to ashtma attacks and hives. My allergies to some things have gotten much worse as I've gotten older and other things don't seem to bother me as much as when I was a kid. New allergies pop up too though even with the same products, they can change their formulas or in the case of food allergies it might be something that got in there that wasn't supposed to.
I don't have any food allergies but almost everything else on the face of the planet sets me off so I have to be so careful about every product I use.
I keep antihistamine and ventolin with me at all times.... if you've had that serious of a reaction they say a repeated exposure to the same thing can either desensitize or cause an extreme reaction so I wouldn't eat anymore of them just to be safe.
i'd go over that packages ingredients carefully to see if anything different stands out so you might get an idea of what it could have been.
A reaction like that is nothing to fool around with. I agree with checking the ingredients. I have food allergies that can kill as well as deer and black fly. An Allergist I went to told me reaction you see on the outside is one thing but internally it is 3 times worse. You should go to your doctor and talk to him about an epipen. I carry one with me all the time, just in case. Could it be peanut, iodine? If anything like that happens again, get to the emergency room, they will rush you thru because it is an allergic reaction.
Good Luck! Again, don't mess with it!
Nancy
The first thing I thought was nut allergy. Check the ingredients--I bet the glaze had some form of nut in it. I would throw out your remaining stash. Don't mess with allergic reactions, because you can build up your sensitivity and each reaction could be worse. Always keep Benadryl with you. There are Benadryl strips for kids that dissolve in your mouth so if your airway closes up, you won't have to swallow pills.
could you have been bitten by something?
I might be carrying an epi-pen from now on. And by "might" I mean "would."

:-)
I had a bunch of allergy tests done a few years ago, which came up negative (it looks like I'd actually gotten blood poisoning from a wasp bite, but since my reaction was systemic my dr wanted me checked out). Then I mentioned to the allergist that when I was nineteen I turned purple on the tenth day of taking sulfa. (It was certainly not my first time on sulfa, but it sure was my last.) My dr at that time suggested I stay away from it from then on, and my mom is allergic...so why not be careful?

She sat down, got very serious, and said:

Many life threatening allergies are actually the second reaction someone has to something. The first is often subtle and slides by unnoticed. Be grateful you turned purple. Your next dose could quite possibly kill you...and fast.

So, now instead of telling people, 'Oh yeah, I might kinda sorta be allergic to sulfa...I turned purple and my mom reacts,' I say: "I have a potentially life threatening allergy to sulfa." It never hurts to be cautious.

I'd take the package ingredients label with you to the dr and talk it over. It could have been something totally unrelated, or you may have developed a life threatening allergy to something at this point in life. It's something I'd explore. You never know.

I'm glad to hear you're okay now.
There are also cross-allergies. If you are allergic to "this," you are also probably allergic to "that." For example, latex and bananas.
Another issue is many mild allergies, that cause serious problems when there are multi allergens present at once.

As much itching as you had, you do need to talk to your doctor. If it were me, I would also carry liquid benadryl with me for emergencies - they have some great premeasured "spoons," just get something to carry them in so they wo't accidentally open in your purse.
How about MSG? I know Lean Cuisines and other foods like that have a tremendous amount of salt. Not sure if they carry MSG - the stuff that is usually in Chinese food that makes many people get headaches...I'm thinking something in the glaze...soy?
I sent a e-mail to Lean Cuisine to let them know what happened. They responded with a phone # to call.

I called just a little while ago and they were concerned and told me this is unusual(really!) and has not happened to anyone before. They wanted to send me some coupons, I told them ummmm no thanks. I did ask that if this happens to anyone else or if anything turns up to please let me know.

I checked the ingredients on the remaining package I have and there is nothing unusual "listed". I have a suspicion that "something" will turn up. Since I have No allergies this can't be a one time thing.
:D Glad you are OK! Sulpha came to mind as I'm seriously allergic to it and have this noted on all my medical and dental records.Sulpha sometimes shows up in preservative compounds as I discovered when I drank unfamiliar beer: my throat got very tight, my palms were itchy and my face turned purple!

Even when you read all the contents, you can't be sure that traces of allergens aren't present. Best wishes!!!
If you have not already, see your Doctor asap.

The advice in the above posts are correct in letting you know not to wait.

Since you do not know what you are allergic too, another reaction
could strike at anytime.

Only your Doctor can prescribe an Epi-pen , so have him/or her evaluate you.
The MD or his staff will instruct you how and when to use it.
Hey! I am currently at my job and itching like crazy.... I ate a lean cuisine at lunch and from the back of my head it seems to be working its way down. I've eaten them before as well. A lot. I work in a hospital and due to a stupid attendance policy I havent hit the ER yet.... but if i start having respiratory distress I am heading to the ER immediately. Let me know what you found out if you found out anything more about this allergy.... I'm so itchy.
It could be the packaging, or something that was handled by someone else it need not be the contents of the food,

Also it could be the work environment!

I have had Hives in the past, while I was taking antihistamines for hayfever my body over reacted, I was a right mess, that itchy I almost took a cheese grater to myself, the secondtime some guys I worked with had been handling rockwool insulation it simply got on my skin in the air , I scrattched an itch!
Hives ?

Never even heard of cross allergies. I'm allergic to latex. Put a latex glove on me and watch my hands turn bright red in 10 seconds. Not allergic to bananas...or any food and I'm not shy about trying new (especially weird) things. (also allergic to a couple flying stinging biting bugs)

oh and this allergic reaction recall from lean cuisine...

Hi. I'm usually a lurker but this thread caught my eye. :)
I have a son with a life threatening peanut allergy so allergies are a huge part of my life. I'd like to reiterate what others have said about getting to an allergist as soon as possible to have a basic skin test done. It is entirely possible to develop allergies later in life. My sister in law (who is 54) has developed allergies to shellfish and pineapple in the past two years. You should start carrying Benadryl and get a rx for an epipen. Allergic reactions are never predictable-the next one could be MUCH worse.
I know a man (from an online allergy board) whose son only had hives for 18 years from his peanut allergy. Benadryl was all he ever needed. On a family vacation after his son graduated he died within minutes from his first and last anaphylactic reaction. You just can't take chances.

Hi My wife was having the itching but though it was a reaction to laundry detergent, she was eating lean cuisine before bed and this went on for about a week until she stopped eating the lean cuisine. Today there was some of her lean cuisine left and I ate one diner and 45 minutes later I itched all over and could not stop the itch and that's when we put the two together the lean cuisine was causing the severe itching.
I just had an allergic reaction to lean cuisine chicken fried rice. I too was at work and
within 15 minutes of eating it my left side of my face started swelling and my throat
started to close. I called the Dr and went in ASAP. They gave me a shot of Benadryl and
made me stay there to make sure I didn't get worse. I am allergic to Sulfa, but nothing
like this has happened before.
I ate a Lean Cuisine Cravables Supreme Pizza yesterday at work. Ten minutes later I developed an intense itching with hives. Fortunately I work at a hospital and know the signs of an allergic reaction, I received immediate treatment. I had no allergies to date. An appointment has been made with my MD. Please don't take allergic reactions lightly.
