Aussie Culture Lesson

I didn't realise that when Monica named Tilly, Matilda she didn't realise what she was getting herself into.

First Tilly will be good at freestyle because we have a VERY famous song in Aus called "Walzting Matilda" Every Aussie knows the words and most of us don't know the words to our National Anthem. Although our National Anthem wasn't adopted until 1984, so we have a bit of an excuse.

Second Tilly will be an independent girl because the swaggie in the song was a big rebel, in fact he was downright criminal.

I have posted a link of Rolf Harris singing the song. It's not the best version of the song but he explains a lot of the Aussie slang. Watch out Monica, you know the saying about giving a dog a name and she will live up to it.

That is so cool Mim! I remember singing this song in school. I really wonder if the nuns really knew what the song was about. :D
Did you sing it in school in the US??? 8O
I bet the nun's didn't know. We sang it at school too, I don't know if the nuns new what it meant but we kids sure didn't
No kidding, Mim, I thought Waltzing Matilda WAS your national anthem. I know all the words, used to sing it all the time when I worked with kids, and I thought Aussies must be the coolest people because they had THE coolest anthem. I don't know what to think anymore....

It IS our national anthem, the unofficial one!!! We were all really p'd when a bunch of boring politicians said "NO WAY, are we having Waltzing Matilda as our anthem because it's too immature." Basically we are a young country and we ARE immature. This is a good and a bad thing.
Glad it brought back some memories. :clappurple:

I've never heard it, or of it, before either LOL And I actually have family in Australia
I used to sing that song so loud as a kid....Walzing Matilda!!!

I also saw Rolph Harris when I was in grade 2...I remember him singing that song and Three Legged Man. It was memorable as he was the first performer I'd ever seen.

Our schools music teacher was an Aussie and she also taught us to sing Kookaberra...ha ha ha ha. (I still know all the words to those songs)

>>wants to be honorary Aus.
Kookaburra!! I just had Waltzing Matilda in my head for a week, now it will be replaced by Kookaburra! :)
we sang kookaburra too. Really some great songs even if we didn't know what it was about.
All together now!! :rimshot: :rimshot: :rimshot:

Kookaburra sits in the ole gum tree
Merry, merry king of the beast is he....
Laugh Kookaberra laugh
gay your life must be..
Ha ha ha ha :yay:

Song of the 3 legged man "jake the blake"

Kookaburra song
Merry Merry King of the "Bush" is he  Not a beast I LOOOOVE Kookaburras.
Egads! you are right Lisa!

Must be a Freudian slip as I meant to write Bush and not Beast. Must be due to the "Beast" who sit at my feet while I type.
Umm another freudian slip, its "I'm Jake the Peg, diddle, iddle, iddle ed, with my extra leg, diddle, etc, etc"
We learned Kookabural as well....just slight differences then Marianne's version

Kookaburrra up in the ole Gum Tree
Merry Merry King of the Brush is he
Laugh Kookaburra, Laugh KookaburralHow gay your life must be.

We've had quite the laugh over the Aussie version of Watzing Matilda.

Cool pic Lisa! I must admit I had heard Kookaburra as a kid too but it was firmly ingrained into my brain because of Barney  My daughter was a Barney fan so when it plays 24/7 you can't help but memorize all the songs. LOL
