Update on Gilligan

Hi,

Just thought I'd give a quick update as to how Gilligan is doing.

I've discovered the key is his happiness besides sitting with me of course.. :D

It's marrow bones!!!! A little frozen but not so much that it would stick to his mouth..kinda like mothers use to freeze those teething rings to help ease the discomfort of teething for little ones.

Gilligan gets daily marrow bones and he happily gnaws them and it helps with the discomfort of his fibroid mass. I sometimes fill the bones with peanut butter or other treats if he's gotten to the marrow quickly.

For those that don't know his story..Gilligan was scheduled to be euthenized at the shelter this year. Not due to any behavorial problems but due to overwhelming medical cost the shelter was experiencing and had to make the difficult choice to spend it on puppies rather than Gilligan who was 9. However, they called me as they knew I had Sheepdogs and may have contacts. Because of everyone on this forum he was given a second chance.

It's been 8 months since that call and Gilligan is still continuing to thrive. He does have a fibroid mass which is inoperable as it goes through his lower jaw and removing his lower manible is not an option. However with good vet care and meds for his hips and nice juicy marrow bones he is a happy boy. He's not in any pain - still has no problems eating and loves his romps around my yard. His Geri-Panel he had done on Jan 4th show his major organs are all fine and his heart is strong. He still continues to be pals with Merlin who is gentle with him. Life is good for Gilligan. He has learned to love his little guinea pig friends who share the family room with him at night and has learned to like cats and bunnies and they like him too!

I love this boy so much. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

Wonderful that he is doing so well. I just clued in that you are Marianne and Gilligan! You need to add a dog named Ginger, maybe a Professor and a Skipper too! I always knew that Marianne and Gilligan would end up together. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Marianne, thanks so much for all the love and attention you spread on Gilligan and all the others at your home :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
What a happy face :hearts: :hearts:
He is so cute and obviously thriving in your care (what animal doesn't???).

:ghug: to you too Marianne, without you, this boy wouldn't have recieved the well deserved chance to be happy.
That's great news! He's looking so happy and good with his coat filling out a bit more. No one deserves happiness as much as an old dog.
Great job, Marianne  Gilligan looks FANTASTIC!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Wow!! Thanks everyone for your comments as they were truly heartwarming!

The photo of Gilligan was taken several weeks ago and his hair is now longer although the vet had to shave one back area - a hot spot which now looks a tad funny. However, it was easier to put cream there and that area is no longer a problem.

As for the Gilligan name..ha ha. For years I always said I would call my next dog - Gilligan - which I did. However, he's so gentle and laid back - he's suit the Professor
more. LOL regarding the comment about having a crew of Skipper, Ginger..ect..I think I'll save those names for foster cats. 4 dogs is enough to keep me busy!!!

Panda, who is such a submissive soul found someone even more submissive and that's Gilligan. As a result , poor Gilligan gets nervous around Panda as he tries to hump him and Snoop the youngest runs so fast I'm worried he may accidently bump into Gilligan and hurt his hips. Only Merlin seems to be aware of his frailties and thus can be left alone with Gilligan. It must be that Merlin was best buddies with Ole Blue who passed at 19. It's funny how those dynamics worked out as it was Merlins reaction who I worried the most when I brought Gilligan home.

Thanks again everyone for your nice comments and once again I say:

"thanks to all of you who participated in helping him get his biopsy that gave him that chance and for those that voiced their opinion that he warranted that chance".

Gilligan sends sloppy kisses to you all! :hearts: :clappurple:
Oh on second thought...perhaps in a few years I'd need to add a Mr and Mrs. Howl...typo is on pupose. nyuck nyuck. :go:
Ahahaha! Thirsty Howl the third?
Marianne, That call must have been Heaven sent.

Because of you Gilligan is living the life of Riley...because of you.
