Female marking

Tiggy and I started at a new agility school today. It's at an indoor facility so we wont get rained out so often like we have been.

There's only one problem. Tiggy thinks she's a boy! 8O She insists on sniffing the ground and then marking where other dogs have peed. Outdoors that's just an annoyance due to her not being focused on me. Indoors on fake turf it means trudging off to get the disinfectant spray and missing training. :(

No one else had the problem, just me. I began to wonder if I'd spend more time spraying than I would training. Any ideas??

A dominant bitch will do this. And if she is intact & coming into or in season it's not uncommon for them to do so. Melody was my dominant girl & she marked on a walk almost as much as a boy. Never did it in the house or inside a training facility. But she would do it at a dog show due to all the smells there.
My female who is spayed will do this with her older brother. He pees and she runs over and pees on top of it...Then he comes back and pes on her's   Only outside. No one EVER pees inside...

Wonder if this is new behavior, could she possibly have a UTI? Peeing in inappropiate places sometimes is a symptom... :lmt:
Could it be nervous excitement, new place, new dogs, new people? What does Tiggy have to say about this? I would prefer to get both sides of the story before I give my opinion. Not that I don't trust you, Mim, but Tiggy often paints things in a different light...
Oh yes Tiggy IS a dominant bitch, I'm well aware of that.

It isn't a new thing, and not a UTI, it's just become more of a problem now that we're working inside. I've spoken to one of the trainers about it in my other agility class and they said "more treats, keep her attention on you". It works to a degree but interesting smells tend to win out over me now and then. And it not great to spend time lifting her head up when she decides to ignore my look at me command.

The fact that she's nervous/excited makes it worse, but she does it all the time at the off lead park too as it's the dominant dog overmarking thing happening.
I am so glad to see this post. Bella will not only mark every sopt that she comes across but attempt to lift her leg. We just figured that she had a gender identity problem. She has been spayed. We just find it kind fo comicical.

Bella's Dad
Hi Bella's Dad,
Tiggy tries to lift her leg too. And it is funny to watch her squat and try to lift a leg at the same time. Except when we're on the fake turf in the indoor arena.  We went better last night I was able to keep her more distracted and also resorted to physically lifting her head with my hands so that she couldn't wander around with her nose glued to the floor. So only a couple of wees thank goodness.
