ORGANIZATION

One of my new years resolutions was to be more organized and stop leaving piles of mail and such around. I am happy to say that I have kept up with this for the most part. I realize now that I forgot to include organizing my dog stuff. So before I order any more brushes and grooming stuff I wanted to find out what everyone out there is using. Right now I have everything jammed into a single bag with no pockets and I always have to dig around to find a rubber-band or the right comb. I take all my tools with me when Bella and I go to the local do it yourself bath place so things need to be portable.

I have an actual tack box for all my grooming supplies.
It sets in my room I use for grooming, and is the "home base" for all my stuff.

I use various bags when I go places - classes, to The Paw to bathe, obedience/rally/agility trials, therapy visits, etc.

Here is one type of tack box - mine is OLD and heavy stainless steel - but similar in that they open up with drawers and compartments.

also used as a seat for snack break at a show!

are the drawer big enough to hold your brushes and combs??? I also carry a box of the Paws rubber foot covers, a set a clippers with charger and a jar of whitener.
I can take a picture tonight (at work until late this evening) and post it.

There are many styles with different space configurations.
Mine holds everything under the sun, and it's very heavy....old and solid.
They make all different sizes, so some are more suited to those with less "stuff", or for easily taking some of the supplies with for a specific trip.
I haven't bought a grooming bag yet as I'm mostly grooming at home but when I do I think I want an easy to travel one so I'll be looking at one like this.

I use a type of gardening bag, but it is very big. It has pockets all around the sides so I can organize my combs, brushes, slickers, scissors, and in the middle I put the finishing spray, conditioning spray, whitening spray..a towel and other things. I lay my grooming smock on the top and it is under my buffet. As soon as I pick that bag up... ALL the furkids scatter~~~~~
If you're not looking for a serious box, I've found this ringside bag to be pretty useful in terms of just including the essential pet owner tools. If you're not showing, you probably don't have a thousand unmarked spray bottles, weird sized tubs of goo and everything else under the sun that you might need with you at a show. I use this one around the house for all the stuff I use the most. The other stuff stays in the tack box.

They've made that version of Dawn's tack box forever but I think the quality of hers is better than what you'd buy now. I wouldn't trust my version of that to support a squirrel. Plus, I hate that big area in it. It's dark and I lose stuff in the bottom. I can't find the one that I upgraded to to show you anywhere. It's polyurethane and is laid out really nice. I wouldn't sit on that one either but the design makes it worthwhile!
I have a D-Flite. Started out with the BIG one. A gift from the kids. After a couple of years I figured I wasn't able to carry it when it was full so I switched to the standard size. Plenty big for tall cans of hair spray & grooming sprays as well as shelves & drawers for brushes (I ususally carry at least 5 different kinds with me) & slickers, stipping tools, rakes etc. A drawer with 3 compartments good for scissors , combs & smaller items. A bit on the pricey side but it lasts a lifetime.
I had a little tote similar to the one Jill posted. I never used it, so I ended up giving it to a friend to use after it sat around for a couple years collecting dust.
LeAnne has one too - she keeps her clipper and clipper supplies in it. Works well for that.

Yes, my ancient metal tack box weighs a ton, but it will probably outlast my lifespan!
We got it as a gift (hand-me-downs - love 'em!) from Chewie's breeder when she got a new one. :D
And I agree, the new ones wouldn't hold a squirrel's weight
I have a plastic portable tool box, essentially, from Home Depot, for shows. Double-decker, if you will, on wheels. It ain't pretty, but it's lightweight, easy to pull, easy to load in the van/wagon, and I can store most of what I need including the small blow dryer (in the bottom compartment in it), so it gets the job done.

I'll take a pic tomorrow. I have to warn you, the colors are hideous 8O There are nicer looking boxes, but this one had the lay-out that worked best for me, I think it cost me $30 on sale, I've had it for about a decade and it's still in great shape (OK, so I don't show very often 8) ) and it weighs a fraction of most tack boxes.

At home for the grooming room I have shelves and a bunch of various sized wicker baskets to hold the stuff I use day to day. The baskets have cloth linings which come out and can be tossed in the wash. This way I don't have to sort through or open anything - just peek in baskets and grab what I need. Which is very useful when you're grooming twitchy rescue dogs who would very much like to escape

Only draw back is that I toss stuff back into it in no sensible fashion and so periodically I have to resort everything and put it back in its proper basket. Of course, if I had any self discipline whatsoever, this wouldn't be necessary

Kristine
I've seen Kristine's baskets - it is a good system. :)

Also the ugly tool box  - but it also works great, easy to move and holds LOTS of stuff. Like a giant version of the one Mim is looking at!

Here are a few pictures - it's the same as Marilyn mentioned - D-Flite - not even sure if they make this style anymore?

From the outside - a brush in front for scale -

with the top lid opened - (please excuse the mess - this is without cleaning/straightening  )

Image

with the front flap dropped down - this is the big dark pit Jill was refering too - I actually like it for the big stuff - I have the tall stuff, peroxide, 1st aid kit, tall boots and all sorts of stuff in there.

and a top view with the drawer open -

Then I take what I want for certain times and put things back when I'm done. I can even have Todd find stuff in here! Tuesday I called from work and was able to tell him to get a certain pin brush out and bring it into town with Chewie so I could do a quick brush before agility class. :clappurple:
Dawn: I think someone told me a couple of years ago D-Flite quite making tack boxes. I like the way I can organize things in it. Like you said, you can tell someone else where to find something very easily. I have smaller spray bottle for when I go to shows for this box. I use big ones at home. Plenty of room for an assortment of leads & collars on the lid as well as stuffing boots & poop bags behind them. I am always amazed at how much I can fit in it. :D

I got mine from Cherrybrook a few years ago. Looks like they still have them :-)
A by-product of totting 45 pounds of camera gear on your shoulder for a decade or so is that you want your tools organized, secure and easy to use quickly. So I have tried a few things

I think the metal tack boxes are ideal for plane travel. It is easier when you are loading them on your wheels at shows, though I ended up with some ugly bruises. And I never thought they held enough. Do you need this to run out to take the dog to the local self-wash? Probably not. But I still like the way they look.

The ringside bags are great. In fact I thought they were so great that I bought two different kinds. The drawback is that when they topple, your stuff goes flying. Turn that corner too fast and ooops! I saw one recently in Walmart's scrapbooking aisle for less than $15 - very same one being sold at a couple of booths at the show for $35. This might be ideal as long as you place it in the car carefully and don't drop it on your way in to the self-wash.

I'm with Kristine. I have been using a tool bag from the hardware store for the last year. I'm still happy with it. And I've noticed quite a few more at shows recently so they seem to be catching on. http://tinyurl.com/6a7wolk It has a slew of pockets inside and out so my scissors are in interior sleeves, along with brushes and various tubes of magic goo. I would think it would hold all you need to take with you to the self-wash - it holds a lot! I really like that the bag has a slew of pockets on the outside too. They are great for the brushes when I'm grooming. The bag has enough support to handle all the weight and not flop around. So it makes using it at home as a brush organizer easy too. It zips closed, has a shoulder strap so it is easy to transport and is soft = no bruising :excited: It holds a lot of stuff and you can't beat the price.

My breeder uses a small plastic tack box. I saw one on one of the sites - but can't find it now. Sorry! It is nice. About the size of a file box and it has a drop in shelf that holds the small stuff.

I have a friend who uses this pretty cool tool box. It is on wheels and holds a ton of stuff. It is pretty big - she can comfortably use it as seat too. Maybe that will be the next one I try. I'll have to see how many times I bang it into my leg and how badly I bruise!

Happy :hearts: Day and good luck!

PS Nice thread. I am interested to see what other solutions there are... maybe Kristine will post pics of her basket system!
Well I went shopping after I got everyone's inputs and decided I would try stopping in at the Sally's which carries hair stuff for humans. This is where I got the thinning shears and a nice set of scissors for trims. All they had was something that I could order and I wanted to see a case in person to make sure it would work. Well the salesperson leans over and whispers to mehome depot I said WHAT??? she says again a little louder HOME DEPOT I trot myself down the street and there in the tool section next to the drills is what I need.

Image and only $24 much better than the one in the catalog that she showed me.

The only thing that won't fit is the shampoo and whitening gel but is was all the little things loose in the bag that was driving me crazy.
What a nice lady to help you like that!

It looks like it fits your stuff very well. :D
I like that carry case. Very nice, great customer service. :clappurple:
That's terrific! I need to get one!
Really nice case! Looks like you can stay really organized now!
