Does that Microchip give you security?

:tea: Hi All,
It's been some time since I was here.
I had something happen and wanted to share it with you all.
A Gorgeous German Shepherd showed up in our Neighborhood two days ago.
A Police Officer came to the house and asked if he was ours.
I said, No. The Officer didn't want to leave the dog here and Animal Control could not come that night.
He said the dog was a bit skittish and he couldn't catch him.
So I went back inside, put my shoes on and went out to see what I could do.
The Officer was gone by the time I got outside, but there was the dog.
We kept the dog here the first night and I listed him as found on craigslist, fido finder and a few other websites.
Yesterday, I went to the 2 local shelters and left my info and a flyer, neither one had any reports of a missing GSD.
I took the dog to a Vet down the street to see if the dog was microchipped.
Sure enough he was!!
BUT!
When they scanned the chip it came back as saying that number was registered to a Pug in South Dakota. 8O
This dog is obviously not a Pug, or any kind of Pug mix. He's a German Shepherd.... it's not very hard to tell that.
So I went home not knowing anything. Home Again had my name and #.
They called this morning and asked if the Vet had given me the owner's number and I said
No. That is why the Vet gave Home Again my info.
There had been a few German Shepherds in the same number range as this one, but none of the dogs had been reported as missing and absolutely no GSDs reported as missing in the area.
Personally, if my dogs got out, My Microchip company, Avid would be my first call, followed by me contacting the local shelters, then listing them online.
Anyhow... Home Again has requested that the owner of the Pug take the dog to a vet to find his actual # and get him registered with that number and they think we may find the GSD's owners under the Pugs chip #.
I am shocked that this kind of mix up could happen.
You'd think that was the one thing you could rely on... I mean, you pay for the chip and then you pay to register.

So he is going to stick around here til we try to locate his owner.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
I hope they can figure this out. :(

Let us know what the pug's people find out when they scan it's chip, OK?

I just called and updated our Avid chip info about a year ago, as my cell number changed. I almost forgot, and then we would have been really screwed if anything had happened. :phew:
Here is the pup:
Certainly does not look like a Pug to me... other than coloring.

My, your beautiful pug has quite a looong snout!

LOL

Good luck!
Beautiful pup, thanks for taking care of him.
He's a beauty and I sure hope he gets back home. Thanks for everything you've done for him. That is scary about the chip being assigned to a different dog.
Ron, that is quite a snout for a Pug, huh?

He will be safe and sound til we figure this out, or exhaust all options.
He's very submissive and I am sure the Shelter would scare the crap out of him.
Besides, he would have been put up for adoption 5 days after the took him in.

He's happy here. But hopefully we can reunite him with his owners, who so far, don't seem to be looking for him.
You know you're keeping that dog. 8)

You know, I guess I always think of the microchip as the last hope. I don't think it would ever be my first call. In my case though, I don't think I could lose one of my dogs if I tried. Maybe I'm the one with the chip in me.
If we can't find his owners, we will be keeping him.
No phone call from Home Again today.

My dogs don't go anywhere. They never leave my side.
Lacey likes to run out and greet people, but none of mine are runners.

My dogs always have their tags on, along with the microchip.
Mr. Shepherd had a collar that was way too loose, but no tags.

He seems to be a Mama's boy. I tell him to sit and he does, then he rolls back his weight to his hind legs and puts his paws around my waist and snuggles against me. What a mush! He must know I am not keen on having another Shepherd.
I hate the shedding!

Clever boy, he knows who he needs to win over.
May as well just cave...I don't think he's going anywhere.

Lucky you, he's beautiful.

Yeah watch, we'll decide to keep him, have him Neutered then the Microchip company will call to say they finally located the owners. Then the owners will sue me for neutering him. :cow:
That would be my luck! :lmt:

Wasn't that an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond?

I think Robert found a bulldog, couldn't find it's owner, decided to keep it, had it fixed, the owner finally came for him, found out the dog was fixed, and Robert & Ray had to buy the dog.

Pretty fitting, as my luck is about as good as Robert's was. LOL!
He is gorgeous, so glad you found him or he found you. What are you calling him?

They should call him Pugsley! Since he is a pug...lol
Oh goodness! He's adorable! and you rock!
Well so far his name is, Get Down, Don't do that, Drop it and Off.
Mr. Pepsi is annoyed with the fact that Mr. Shepherd is intact.
Both Sheepdogs have major tail envy and get very angry when Mr. Shepherd goes after his own tail, which is something he does every time he catches sight of it.
I can understand why they get upset, because Mr. Shepherd goes berserk when he chases his tail, gets all growly and sounds vicious.
Rags has actually been very accommodating to the Shepherd.
She knows he is still a puppy and will do her play bow to him, but he doesn't know what to do back. She even licks his face.
But you can tell she is not thrilled. She pinned Pepsi on his back last night on the patio, just for walking past her.

He has started chasing the Sheepies when they go to run to the side of the house where they have barking matches with my Neighbor, Ernie's Pug Mix, Lola. Lola is an almost non-stop barker... She barks all hours of the day and night. But he just runs to that side of the yard, can't figure out what all the barking is far, so he comes back to the patio.
The Shepherd still has yet to bark. He whines he growls at his tail, but no barking. Oh yeah.... he also howled when I vacuumed yesterday.
His fur is still somewhat soft, like a puppy coat. Anyone know when Shepherds hair starts to get wirey?
He is getting more comfortable to the point he has counter surfed, luckily we are used to counter surfing and there was nothing there for him to get. He has also eaten two rubber ducks that Hayley left on the floor. His hugs that were so pleasant when he remained in a begging position with his butt on the floor, is now full jumping up paws on my shoulder.
He also peed in my bedroom on the last remaining section of old carpeting that we hadn't pulled yet...
Then lifted his leg on the couch, on the blanket Rags sleeps on. (Rags was diagnosed with Incontinence a few months back after Billy found her in a PUDDLE of urine on my couch!!! You know, the new couches!!!
Luckily, we have a warranty and they came out and cleaned the couch for free.)
Also, luckily for Mr. Shepherd he is tall enough that when he lifted his leg just a little sprinkled on the blanket covering the couch and it didn't even leak through.... the majority of it was on the throw rug.
I washed the blanket on the couch and cleaned and treated the rug with Nature's Miracle.
At some point yesterday morning he decided to check out my Desk and knocked off a Candle and broke it and took my sunglasses out of their case.
Last night Billy said, Let's keep him in our room so he doesn't cause any trouble.
Every two minutes for the first hour after I shut the TV off I had to turn it back on or the light to see what he was getting into. He was up on my Vanity, then my Dresser and just getting into everything. He made me nervous that he was going to get into something and I would be pissed. So I had a hard time falling to sleep.
This morning, after Billy put him out for pee he left him out there til I got up to keep him out of trouble. He doesn't complain, he likes it out there... just chills... unlike the Sheepies who have to be with us at all times.
I don't know if I am ready for all this puppy BS!! I said I would NEVER get another puppy!!
I am almost praying that we find his owners!!!

Update with that. No further calls from Home Again, no reports of a missing GSD anywhere online.
Nobody has called about my flyers.
Sounds like he is getting comfortable  . Does he do well in a crate (or did you already try that)?
So I called Home Again earlier this week since I hadn't heard from them
The Pug had gone to the Vet and had the chip # he was supposed to have.
Home Again called the Vet's office to try to figure out what the story was.
Well, it turns out the chip # showing was from the last dog scanned with that scanner.
This Vet had bought their Home Again scanner used from another place.
So I took "Astro" to Animal Samaritans, where his neutering appt is scheduled for March 7th.
They scanned his entire body and NOTHING came up!!
Only something this bizarre would happen to me!
I had contacted German Shepherd rescue here in Southern California and they said they'd be willing to take him, if I fostered and I gladly agreed. But a day went by since I had agreed to Foster and the woman hadn't responded to my last e-mail. I wanted to get him Vetted, schedule neutering.
I went ahead and scheduled the surgery as I knew there was a waiting list.
I contacted the woman again yesterday morning, by e-mail as she had never given me a phone number.
I haven't heard from her in 3 days! That worried me.
Anyhow now knowing that he doesn't have a chip and that nobody was looking for him, we were going to wait until after he was Neutered and then try to find him a home.
BUT!!!
Today I got a phone call. A guy had gone to the Palm Springs Shelter to look specifically to adopt a German Shepherd.
He lost his last year to old age. He got a Golden Retreiver/Pitbull mix from the Shelter last year and wanted to get another dog to keep him company while he and his wife were working. And of course, he wanted another German Shepherd. No German Shepherds at PS Shelter which is a small, nasty little place, but the guy noticed my Found Poster on the wall and called to inquire if I wanted to put him up for adoption.
He told me his situation and that he really wanted another GSD, he misses the one he had. :(
He then came over to meet Astro. Astro was a bit skittish, which I knew he would be, but he did come up and licked the guys hand right away, then backed off to observe at a distance. With Billy it took his two days to get a lick on the hand. LOL! The guy, whose name was Joe, loved him immediately, even the quirky way he gets all growly and chases his tail.
We decided he would adopt him.
He went home to get a leash, since I didn't have a spare.
Then we finally got him into Joe's truck. Astro is not a fan of getting into cars.
I was talking to Joe before he pulled out of the driveway and Astro was sitting up in the backseat and had his head leaning over the front seat...
He was very relaxed, which had me really relaxed and I just kept saying that he was such a good boy!!
Joe immediately took him to get his vaccines, he also changed the Neutering appt to his name.
He signed a contact with me, he said, I have no problem signing this, but trust me, he is now my dog!
He's with me for the long haul! The best part, he thought that Astro was a very fitting name for him and will be keeping it!
He offered to give me money for Astro and I declined.
Just knowing that he was taking him to the Vet immediately was good enough to show that he was willing to do what had to be done to make sure this guy was well taken care of.
I will be meeting up with the the Joe's wife on the day that Astro gets neutered.
Hayley wants to say good bye and since Astro left when she was at school, she didn't get to say goodbye.
Astro was going to get micro-chipped today, but since he is not a happy boy at the Vet and had to be muzzled, they decided to have it done while he's put out for Neutering, so he won't feel it or have a reason to get upset.
Joe's wife hasn't met him yet. Though I am sure he will love her. He is definitely a woman's dog.

Joe called me after a few hours. He told me about the vaccines and about switching the appt to his name.
He said his other dog and Astro were hanging out together laying down in the living room as we were speaking.
He said earlier they played nicely together in the fenced in yard. He did say that Astro tried to hump his dog.
He never tried that here. LOL! I think he knew this was Miss Rags' House. Joe's other dog growled and swatted him off and that was the end of it. He said he would call me closer to Astro's surgery date to get more info from me and to update me on how everything is going.

Please send lots of happy wishes to Astro and his new family!
That is so great! :yay:
How nice he was a previous GSD owner too, sounds like this poor dogs life is taking a permanent change for the better.
Great news!

Good luck Astro with your new family.
