Hi form MidMichigan

Hello my name is Amanda. I do not have a Old English Sheepdog. I don't even have
nor have I ever had a dog. I do however have an Eleven year old cat
named Johndy Lynn.
I am about 2 years or so from getting my first apartment and Johndy
will be coming with me and joining whatever breed I decide on. So it
is imperative that whatever dog I finally choose be cat and child
friendly as I have a niece who will be 3 on the 13th. I plan on
rescuing, so I am hoping that a foster mom will help me find a dog
that not only matches my energy level but will also not chase Johndy,
or not get nippy with Audrey. I want to make sure I get the right breed for me. I don't want to end up with the wrong breed because of poor research. Old English Sheepdogs are just one of many breeds of dog I am currently researching. I have lots of questions and hope you all can answer them :)

So with that I say hello! And thank you
for reading my intro!

Amanda

Hi Amanda and welcome to our little OES corner of the web :D
This is a great spot to learn and find out info on OES, as well as dog stuff in general.
Congrats to you for planning and doing your research! :clappurple:
Definitely read around here, there also are search options on this site to find older posts that may cover a question you might have. If all else fails, just ask!

The people on here are a wide variety of OES owners - some new, some just getting puppies, some old timers, some who have rescues, some who are serious breeders who show and compete, some who are dogless - the whole range. We all love our dogs as the common thread though :D

As someone myself who shows and competes, I also am a huge fan of rescue. In fact I volunteer with rescues of my 2 favorite breeds - OES and bassets. Right now I am fostering one of each.
And my foster OES would easily fit the needs you have. Not to make you adopt now, but just to show that a rescue dog would certainly be a good option when you are ready to get your 1st dog.

Good luck and welcome :D

Hi Vista! Thanks for the warm welcome! My first dog will most definitely be a rescue. I'm not ready for a puppy. I'm thinking a dog round 2-4 years old. Id like them to be potty trained, but not so old that I start t wonder how much time Ihave with them. For my first dog, I want to be able to enjoy them a while kwim?. I have gone through so many breed researches that I'm starting to think that I'll only be able to get is a little yappy dog... I know that I've never had a dog before, but I feel in my heart lie I'm a Medium to Giant dog kind of person.
Hi Amanda!

Welcome to the community! I hope that we will be able to guide towards -or away from- an Old English Sheepdog of your very own.

Lots of folks with MANY years of experience are just waiting to pounce on your every question. I'm glad you found us.

Thank you and Hello Ron!

Oh I did have one question... it's a little dorky, but could anyone post a photo of their full grown OES next to another full sized dog of a different but well known breed? I have never seen any OES in my life so I have absolutely no idea of there full size. Maybe a photo of a shaved and regular cut OES. I want to see how much is hair and how much is dog.
I bet I can do that, as we have so many other dogs here...

Let me dig and see what I have.
Hello Amanda and welcome!
Image
Image

Foster Bunny with Harley the basset.
Bunny is about 22 inches (dog height is measured at the withers) and 64 pounds, and shaved - she has about an inch of hair. Harley is about 40 pounds and short...about 14 inches

Image

Chewie in a pretty long coat next to Gabby - a smaller adult male Samoyed.
Chewie is 23.5 inches and 68 pounds, Gabby is 52 pounds (we do weight pulls, we know our dogs' weights to the pound!)

Image

Chewie in a shorter haircut - probably 4 inches, next to a female white GSD

Image

Chewie in a short cut, running with our lab Biscuit, OES sister Martha behind

Image

Chewie in show coat, next to a Dalmation

Hope this helps!

Awesome Thanks Dawn!
Dawn, you're so small, though, you make Chewie look giant and putting him next to Bassett? C'mon. Lol

I'd take some pics but my OES are the small dogs and the comparison dog is huge and not common enough for it to be worthwhile!

I'm not small, I'm a very TALL 5'4" !!! And those are normal sized dogs by him, a Dal and a GSD!!

And it's Bunny the foster by a basset...and I put in actual height measurements to help.....lol

I agree, Bear (Komondor) next to Clyde or Owen would be quite the comparison

I take it you consider me a midget then, Jill? Since I'm 2-3/4" shorter than Dawn? I suppose a picture of me next to José wouldn't be a fair comparison either
I think that I am falling in love with Chewie. :hearts:

Thanks! They are not as big as I originally thought. I Was thinking they were the size of a Newfoundland or a Pyranees.
Hi Amanda,

We live in Grand Rapids, but our families are in Flushing and Davison. I'll PM you sometime when we are coming to town if you are interested in meeting two of the sweetest sheepies ever!

Also check out my photos, there is a photo of Charlie before and after a shave (Biggest Loser), to give you an idea how much can be hair. Most of my friends didn't believe that both shots are the same dog!

Here he is, Charlie before and after!
Ahahaha!!!!!

Purrrrfect.
Good one!!!! :high5:

That is wild! I always thought that OES had the body mass of Mastiffs. Never thought they would be that much more hair than body. I will keep what you said in mind. Right now I'm in school so that's why I haven't been online much, been busy busy busy! lol
