Sneaking into bed!

Our little Shelby (2 years old) whom we rescued back in November is causing me many sleepless nights.

When we first got him home, he would sleep in his bed, not waking till the morning. Then things changed. At first he would try to jump into bed with us and get shooed out. Then, I'd catch him sneeeaaakkkking into my bed in the middle of the night. He'd go about it so carefully and so quietly that many nights I'd wake up with him curled up down by my feet.

Well, as they say, give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Now he's sneaking into bed and instead of curling up at the foot, he's decided that stretching out alongside me is a wonderful thing and spooning, nuzzling, jamming his head onto my chest, etc., totally waking me up.

The only way it seems to get him out of bed now (when I tell him to get down, he looks at me like I'm nuts) is to get myself (or my husband) up, walk to the bedroom door, pretend to walk down the stairs and finally, out of curiosity, Shel will jump out of bed and come looking to see what's going on, at which point, I say AHA! and point to his bed and tell him to go lay down. He complies, I go back to sleep and 20 minutes later it starts all over again. This is not fun at 1am, 2am, 3am, etc.

I am exhausted and at my wits end as to how to keep him out of my bed. Suggestions?

Jen

Maybe Shelby just wants someone to sleep with. You might try getting him another dog... or two.

Maybe put his bed in your bedroom. I have 3 that start out with me at night on my bed. They are very respectful of my space most of the time. On accasion, it has gotten too crowded that I just moved to a different bedroom. After a while, you gussed it, they found me. Yup.......they have me very well trained. Seriously, he wants to be with his family/pack. When I get serious with mine, I say VERY FIRMLY, "OOOOFFFFFFFF!!!" I may have to do it a couple times but it works. Sheepies can be pretty persistant and you just might give in.LOL
I see you are sorta new like me. Welcome. This is an interesting and fun forum.

P.S. Sheepies are also good at training their uprights. I know, They have been doing it to me for over 30 years!!!!!
Yeah, I have no advice to offer, but I can sympathize with you. Oliver never wanted to sleep in bed with us until Lucy came along. So, now we have Oliver, Lucy, hubby, and I all in a queen size bed...

...we are getting a king size this spring to better accomodate our sleeping arrangement .
If you really don't want them sleeping in bed with you, you may have to resort to a crate at night.
Ha! These cold nights I find Harry to be an excellent bed warmer. I don't use traditional covers, just a duvet over me. This way he is not covered, but I am. IF Jack could climb, he'd be on the bed too, but his climbing days are long gone :cheer:

Yeah, if you really don't want them up there, put a crate beside the bed, cover it as there may be a draft down on the floor, nice pillow inside and put the pup to bed beside you.
Awww your dog loves you and wants to be around you and cuddle! Maybe get a bigger bed?

My dogs always have someone to nap with. Dogs love being with you and eachother.

But our bedroom is off limits - it's gated, and only Tipup the cat sleeps on the bed.
Ditto........

:clappurple: Those are great pictures! Dawn, I feel so sorry for Chewie in your pic, he's the only one not on a couch! He's probably be too hot I guess.

Yep, exactly right.
Chewie never has laid on a couch or chair. He rarely even lays on the carpet for the same reason. Lately with our below zero temps and dangerous windchills he has occasionally laid on the carpet...but still prefers the cold cement slab on the porch

The only reason he was where he was for that picture is I was at the table next to him on my laptop. I saw the dogs all on the couches and wanted to get a picture. I gave him a stay signal and grabbed my camera and took the picture.
I'm jealous! We can't get Mady to sleep in bed with us, I'm sure it's just way too hot. We can convince her to come up for 5-10min cuddle before bed and in the morning, but then it's down and into the cold tile floor by the shower.
Hah! :D These are great photos! Now I know why all of you are sleep deprived.

Oscar is like Mady. He might find it mildly entertaining to get up on a bed for a minute (only because he isn't allowed), but then he would be searching for cooler pastures.

Tiggy's the same, she loves to come up on the bed and walk on me and then sit on my head before a snuggle but she only last 5 or 10 mins then its back on the polished boards. Just lately she's started getting on the sofa for a bit longer. Must be old age.

I think the only way I'd get much snuggling would be if I shaved her down.
