Safe Paw ice melt - Important

There is a product called Safe Paw ice melt. It is a blue colored pellet type melt. Its very expensive compared to regular ice melts. It is okay for pets and humans. In fact you can distribute it with your hand. Works great. I've used it for years with no problem and works like a charm.

Some companies are now imitating this product and stores are claiming its the same thing but a different name. One particular called Safe Walk or walk Safe. White pellets. Claim to be non toxic and safe for pets. It is NOT safe for pets! I bought some thinking it was the same thing as Safe Paw and it instructed me to "use gloves" while distributing and shovel up any excess. Also warned how the pellets heat up to 175 degrees and if caught in paws, can cause bleeding. And if ingested, can cause intestinal upset. The store I purchased from told me this stuff was the same as Safe Paws but under different name. Safe Paw does not ahve these warnings.

I called the Safe Paw company and they told me in fact it is NOT the same. So warning, the white pellets stuff is NOT Safe Paws. It can cause problems for your dogs and yourself. Regardless of what the store might tell you, this stuff is NOT Safe Paw product by another name. I am so pissed as I purchased three bags of this crap and now can't use it! Safe Paws is ONLY blue color pellets. Just beware.

Seeing as the store told you it was the same stuff and it's not, I'd be taking it back and demanding they swap it for the real deal.
YIKES!!!

Thanks for the heads up!

We use Safe Paws only on really bad ice days, since it is pricey...otherwise we stick with sand. If I see this other stuff being sold in its place, Ill be sure to point the packages own "warnings" out to the store manager :x
My first clue that it wasn't safe should have been when th label said to wear gloves while applying :cow:
Hi Diane......
Thanks for the information about Safe Paw. I am going to PetSmart today to see if they carry it there. Here in Minnesota, we have lots of snow and ice as well. I want a product that works well and is safe for me to walk on. I don't want a 'do over' on a new hip. Something that can be used is cat litter, NEW STUFF! Don't recycle from the litter box. LOL
Thanks again for the info.
Nancy
Nancy, one of the stores the people at Safe paw told me to go was Pet Smart. However when I called around the stores by me, they were out of stock. They did have the other stuff - walk Safe. So beware...Walk safe is NOT safe for dogs and is white pellets. Only Safe Paw has the bule pellets...

I have also found dirt works well! We had some bags of dirt in the garage and as I didn't want to ue the other white pellet stuff, I looked in the garage and found some left over potting soil dirt. Put it down on the ice and although its messy, it worked wonders!
Isn't that the stuff that dissolves after it heats up though? We have stuff similar to that that actually says "safe after it dissolves" or something like that but you're not supposed to walk on it until it actually dissolves. I think ours is green and white, though.
When we lived with my father in law, we would use bird seed on his wooden ramp. Often I was sweeping up seed in the main hallway, but I guess that is better than salt.

You can get SafePaws at many hardware stores like ACE.
