Just sharing this now....hubby's "lay off"

My husband has always enjoyed working for small consulting companies, in the IT field. This drives me nuts...no job stability. And we've been through lay offs twice before.

Near the end of November, a group of employees at his company were warned that there were a number of ending contracts with clients, and that they would likely be laid off jan. 1st.

What a wonderful thing to have looming over your head during the holidays. And the boss wildly speculated (we'll be able to keep you...no we won't...it's looking good...it's looking bad...) My hubby immediately started looking for work, and has had some interviews, but nothing moves quickly, especially over the holidays.

On the 29th, his boss realized that he hadn't taken his two weeks of holidays (we were hoping to hold off as long as possible, to at least have two weeks of salary at the end...we still haven't really recovered from the last period of unemployment...) He told my huby to take his two weeks immediately, and I spent my last week of my break with him underfoot (and very emotional of course).

The second last day of holidays he stopped by the office and was told it was official. He had one last day. All the eleventh hour back and forth didn't pan out...I get that. But the constant false hope did not sit well with me.

On his first day of unemployment, they emailed him about going out for lunch. He did other things (some private consulting, house repairs, and another job interview) for the first few days, and then finally met with them on Thursday.

They suddenly found a contract for him. (One other guy quit, and I believe four others are still on lay off.) Would he come back?

We need the money and he needs to work...And they weren't sure if he'd be officially rehired, or hired on a term contract. Either way, it took until the following Wednesday to get things arranged and he started at the new client's site. Then I, of course, ask the dreaded question: So, why don't we have an ROE (record of employment) so we can apply for unemployment benefits? We are entitled after all. He's been unemployed for a week and a half. (And we do have this pesky little thing called a mortgage.)

Dead silence on that one...no one's sure.

They consider it, and finally, yesterday, let us know that, "It's too much of a hassle to go through the lay off process, produce an ROE, and then rehire him, so we're just going to pretend none of this happened. We never started the paperwork to lay him off, so we'll just pay him straight through as if he worked." Now, don't get me wrong...I'm happy we're getting paid and that things are now stable again for at least a while, but...

How does a company do that to an employee? And why do these weird things always seem to happen to me (or members of my family)? I am dumbfounded.

Anyway, I just wanted to share. I'm hoping my world will stop spinning for at least a little while now. Fingers crossed.

Wow what a roller coaster ride! Sounds very "not fair" to me but also very typical. Such a bummer of a time of year to be left wondering and then have it all sort out (kinda) after the holidays. It's lucky you asked about the ROE it would have been too easy for them to just let that one go through to the keeper, so to speak. Money in their pocket and not yours.

I hope things are stable for you now. :crossed:
It was a horrible roller coaster and you must have been so stressed over the holidays. I feel for you and your family. Just keeping you guys in my thoughts and hoping that job instability is a thing of the past.

My husband is in IT so I feel your pain. He has been at the same job for 32 years however, and is fully vested for retirement. They just keep piling more work on him and taking things away instead. IE 1 week of vacation, annual bonus, annual increase of pay. We now have a $30.00 copay every time we go to the doctor! Employers don't treat their employees very well anymore. It seems to be the trend now. I am just glad my hubby has a job. He does side jobs under the table too.
I'm really sorry that you've had to go through this. It is hard to go through a lay off at any time, but near the holidays seem to make the approaching lay off more nerve racking. I'm glad they've had second thoughts and have your hubby working again.
Argh! But I'm glad it worked out. Good for you for asking about unemployment! Yeah, that mortgage won't wait! Side jobs might be a good idea to build up emergency fund and recover from previous unemplyment stint.

Anymore, nothing is certain. Any private sector job is bound to have "adjustments." Only the government seems to keep growing and growing.........sigh.
:D I can really relate to what you just went through! The same sort of thing can happen everywhere now. There is very little loyalty in the work place. The good thing is that your husband was "rehired" although the company sounds as if the right hand doesn't know (or care) what the left hand is doing! 8O
I can sympathize. We went thru 2 lay-offs with Dale right before Christmas. The first one was when I was pregnant with Spencer (our oldest), and we were looking at the reality of my being out of work for awhile. The second one was when the kids were 12 and 8 and all the Christmas presents had already been bought. We came out stronger on the other end of both times, but it sure was stressful.

Glad you can breathe for awhile at least. If I were your hubby, I would still keep looking elsewhere - you never know when it will happen again. I agree that there is no employer loyalty to employees any more. Very sad.

:ghug: :ghug:
Hang in there. We've been through several lay-offs over the years. They were a stressful time, but the new jobs turned out to be much better than the old ones.
Sorry you went through all of that, Tracie. Life stress is lousy.
So sorry you've had to go thru this and hope that at least for a while things are back to normal.

Just remember Traci these strange things happen to most of us. Carl and I got very tired of hearing that whatever was going on with us, medically or whatever, was unique.
I really hate that word.
