Reading with Rover Program

I am going to be retiring in June after a wonderful 34 year career as a Speech/Language Therapist in the elementary schools. :clappurple: Children (both human and furry) are my passion and I know I will need a regular "kid fix" after June. Kolby, my handsome and endearing OES, will be 1 yr. old in March. I would love to train him to be a certified Reading with Rover friend.
Has anyone gone through this program with their Sheepie? I know he has to earn his Canine Good Citizen first and then Pet Therapy Certificate.

Thanks in advance for your feedback,
Jackie

Jackie there are several Therapy Dogs here on the forum and many of them do a reading program but I don't think any of them are in the Reading with Rover. Those of us who participate in the reading programs really enjoy them.

Here is Beaureguard from North Carolina in Paws to Read:

Nelson in Indiana does a program called Tail Waggin' Tutor:

In St. Louis there are three dogs. Pearl, Heart and Harry are in Paws for Reading.

There is not a picture of Heart working in Paws :? :( Val?

I may have missed a couple of dogs who do reading programs.

To train for the program make sure you are able to do all the requirements to become certified. Some places provide classes to help you train for specific Therapy dog programs. You can inquire in your area about that.
Our local group of TDI therapy dogs participates with one of our local public libraries (North Mankato). We have going there for reading with the kids as one of our regular activities.

Sadly, our Mankato area school district has a strong anti dog, anti pet of any kind policy in their schools, so we don't do read programs there. One of our members is a retired teacher, who subbed (after retiring) well into her 70's, and even with that "in", they wouldn't bend the rule, despite the documented benefits to the kids. :(
Thank you Dawn for posting that. I thought my friend in Taos had the only anti-dog school district. She and her Great Pyrenees, Martha Stewart, were in Reading Rangers and doing very well. The kids, the teachers loved the program. In walked a district supervisor who blew his stack in front of the kids! Immediately the program was ended.

Curiously, Taos County is one of the first counties in the nation to get a therapy dog for the courts....to help with emotional/violence cases.

The teacher is taking pics of EVERY child with Heart :hearts: and MEEEEEE....and you know how I just love getting my pic taken~!!!!!!

I just need to figure out how to crop myself OUT!!!!!!! :?

Jackie:::
You will not regret having this as your goal for 2011!!!! It will be alot of work, but, I know just from my experience, it is so worth it!!!! The children do love reading to the dogs, and the dogs love all the attentionAND I enjoy giving these children some great memories!!! A win-win-win situation!!!

In our library, all the children crowd around us as we sit on our reading blanket. Since they have to wait their turn, they listen to each other read.

One of the many stories I have from this wonderful program:::

Abby came to read one week and seemed to enjoy it! The next week Abby was waitng for us, so she could be the first in line. Her mother took me to the side and said:::

"Last week, when we got into the car to go home, Abby was very quiet. She is very shy and has trouble reading aloud in class, so I thought this would help. I asked Abby if she was ok!! And she smiled and said, "I think Heart liked me reading to her...but I was sooo NERVOUS~~ I have never read to a DOG before!!!!!!' "
Abby's mother thought it was very interesting that Abby didn't care about all the kids listening to her, she just cared about Heart :hearts: !!!!!!!
And one other option I forgot to mention!
We also participate with our Barnes and Noble's kids story hour program.

A bit different in structure, as the human part of the dog team is doing the reading, (one of them, we take turns) and the kids lounge around with the dogs.
The kids are more calm, attentive and better behaved. :D
I think Nelson legitimately looks like he's reading. Harry's intellectual look is helping the cause but I have a feeling that he still needs help sounding out the words. Pearl and Beau are just in it for the fame and glory. :)

LOL. It's cute how the girl is holding the book so Nelson can see the pictures.

Just goes to show you don't know what you are talking about Jill. Harry CAN read!!!!!
At least he is always reading the signs in Rally! :P
I absolutely LOVE all of the "reading pups"! I am definitely going to check out the training program and different sites in our area. I live in a northern suburb of Pgh in a community FULL of children's programs so I have lots of research to do

We also have a brand new Center for Grieving Children. I will definitely also check with them because I know Kolby could definitely lift the spirits of these dear kiddos.

Thanks to all for your wonderful responses!

GO STEELERS!!!!
