ME and Agility and other things

((MOM is getting ready for work, so I decided to thread an update of my 2011 activities to all my OES friends))
Heart :hearts: :hearts:

Tuesdays are very busy day for us!!!

PAWS
We go to PAWS at a school in the morning. The first grade children that read to me are so sweet and nice and BOY do they love me!!! I was a little overwhelmed last week, (the first time) with 21 children, 42 hands petting me all at once, but this week it was so much better! Mom is going to dress me up as the characters in the books the children are reading so we can show them that reading is cool!!!

This school just opened in September in 2010 so, I am hoping other PAWS dogs will be asked to visit different classes.

AGILITY
This is my 3rd attempt to begin a class in Agility. For those of you who don't know us, mom is a whimp when it comes to driving, especially at night. All classes were always very far away and most are in the evening. So..although we would begin classes~~we never, ever finished one. Finally, she found a beginning class that is located in her comfort zone.

Last night was my second class!!! There are 4 other dogs and another OES! All the other pups have never taken an agility class before, so I have to say, I am quite good ( in comparison).
I know how to 'attack' all the toys, but I am still very fearful of that noisy TEETER!!! 8O 8O ~ The instructor is very nice and is aware of my terror, so there is extra time spent with me so I can go slow and build my confidence. It is not at a full apex and I was able to succeed in facing my fears 4 times last night~~~ HOW GREAT AM I??????
I would love to actually compete and not embarrass my mom OR my Aunt Judi as I did at Nationals...

And I think I will be able to do it in 2011. NOW, I have no control over mommy since she is REALLY clueless on directing me, but I am sure she will try her best. ((this is where Aunt Judi can help))

DOG MUSEUM.....
At the end of March, 'we' were asked to be the GUEST DOG OF THE WEEK at Dog Museum! Mom and I will greet visitors and answer questions about OES's and mom has pics of me doing herding, rally, obedience, agility, Dog Scouts, Therapy, PAWS.. This is the only Museum dedicated to the history of DOGS in the world. So it is quite an honor! I guess I have to get my best BLING out for THAT one. :yay: :yay:

I am hoping to have pictures really soon......

oh...and Coz is doing good....Pearl is doing great... :clappurple: :clappurple:

SOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo.what are YOU doing in 2011??????????????

LOVE TO ALL!!!!!!

thanks heart for updating us on your great life!!!
Oh Heart you are my hero! Mom is working on my bling. I like wearing it but my stupid brother pulls it off of me.
I also have started agility but we did not finish our second class because a Pitbull tried to eat me. So mom said she is looking for another agility class. She also said something about a Rally class. I don't know what that is but hope I can get applause. I just love when the uprights appaud and the other furries just look at me in amazement.
Heart have a great day. I know you will look beautiful! Send photos. Wow you were the top dog at the museum! I am proud to know you! I too want to do the library thing. I need to pass my Canine Good Citizen test first. I know I can do it. I love the little uprights!

You did NOT embarrass your mom. She's just easily embarrassed - you need to work on that.

Personally I recommend teaching her to laugh. When we make mistakes, upright bursts into laughter. I LOVE this. When she does I realize that (a) she has recognized who screwed up (HER!!!!) and (b) well, I just enjoy it when people laugh. It makes me want to run faster, jump higher, take her out at the knees harder, you get the picture...

Upright has expanded her Laughter Defense System (other handlers have "handling systems", not us, nope, we have LAUGHTER SYSTEMS, maybe if we worked a little harder on the former we'd need a little less of the latter, but I digress) to include making instructor and class mates laugh.

Last night was a good example. We had to go from the end of the dog walk, two jumps and then into the correct end of the tunnel. Upright tried racing me. Big mistake.

Back to dog walk. She tried a false turn to bring me towards her so she could put me in the "right" end of the tunnel (ever notice how worked up uprights get about the correct end of things? Sheesh!) Nope. Too little, too late.

Try again. Instructor suggested she use deceleration in conjunction with the false turn, noting wryly that it IS possible to do two things at once. Upright shot back that she was quite sure it was entirely possible for INSTRUCTOR to do two things at once. So instructor gave instructions WHILE we were running, more than one, in fact, at which point upright shot back "Geez, woman, you don't want MUCH!" And class started to laugh.

I'm not sure why, really. She's given the instructor a harder time before. But this is a very serious class, not used to seeing this particular instructor heckled - EVER (she's one of those natural alpha bitches if you know what I mean). While they were all still laughing, upright tried it one more time and this time she managed to let me know which end of the tunnel she wanted me to go to.

My vote: when all else fails: laugh at yourself. And mean it.

Heart it sounds like you are going to have a great year!!!

I wish I could see the dog museum.

You definitely need to train your Mom up on the laughter system. It is starting to work for my Mom and it makes classes much more enjoyable. The funny thing about uprights is when one of them laughs all the others often do too. It must be a pack thing like barking when there's a knock at the door. And guess what? Laughing is nearly as good as applause! The uprights all relax and even start to hand out pats and attention, so get your Mom working on it.

My Mom has joined us up in a new agility school too. We start in a few weeks. It's on a Monday night and Mom says that's much better than a Friday night. We kept missing Friday night classes because Mom had social events on. Very selfish of her if you ask me, but no one did.

Mom told the membership person at the new agility school that when you do agility in partnership with and OES you get good at laughing off embarrassment as OES will make up their own minds about what the course involves. And that some days it involves saying hello to the spectators! I wasn't there but apparently the lady was quite surprised at the laughing system. She isn't fortunate enough to be owned by an OES though.

Have a great year and make sure you show us lots of pictures.

Heart,

My mom never finds you embarrassing. That is what she has me for.

She is really excited that you found an agility class and thinks you are a STAR!!!! :cheer:

She mentioned something about you coming over when the weather warms up to practice on the teeter. But wouldn't you rather go through the TUNNEL? :excited:
YOU can go first and I will follow....... It always makes my mom roll her eyes though she is usually laughing when I come out the other end of the tunnel first.

Last night I had a private lesson with a new instructor. She told my mom that I am the more advanced member of my team. As if I didn't know that.

Then after a dinner break where I shared french fries with my mom I went to class. There I proceeded to do such a good job that the other uprights were yelling at my mom to give me treats. She was just mumbling something about "leaving the dog walk before actually being released". I knew what she was going to say anyway and she was taking sooooooo long to say it. Besides everyone else was impressed with me even if my mom was not.

I am like Sybil .... I like to please the crowd. Self control is highly overrated.

See you soon Heart.

xxooo
