What does your dog's name mean to you?

I have been wondering about some of the dog names on the forum. We have some very unique names here, as well as ones that are more personal. So, how did your dog's name become "the" name? Does it mean something special, a name your child chose or more simply... My dog is named "..." because..??

Our last yorkie was a stray, he just appeared one day, frail, filthy and filled with terror at everything. He looked like a tiny fox with his markings. We named him Foxx because by the time we realized his owners were not looking for him, he knew the name. Foxx lived with us for another eleven years, had many health issues yet lived a quality life.
Chloe was already named when we adopted her, and it was good for her to keep it.

Mady (pronounced Matty) - I wanted a short 2 syllable name, seems the best for calling your dog. The "Mady" spelling I chose is a name from West Africa that I really like (like from a singer from Mali I love, Kasse Mady Diabate). We had no idea about the sheer irony of naming a Sheepdog with a full coat "Mady", I didn't quite realize just how "Matty" she can get...

Of course, shortly after getting her, it became her name and I can't imagine her with a different name, it belongs to her. :hearts:
Neat topic.

I had a list of 100 plus names prior to getting our boy. We narrowed it down to 3. Mark really like the name Howie. Howard means guardian of sheep. He gets called both Howard or Howie depending on what he is doing!

keep the names coming,
peg
Violet Jewel-she came from the Rescue with the name Violet and she is a wall-eye so it fit. My granddaughter Jenah Jewel wanted me to name the dog after her, so we compromised with using her middle name Jewel so: Violet Jewel
China Aqua is my Aussie with blue eyes. Her face reminds me of "fine china" and since her eyes are blue that is also the Aqua.:China Aqua
Asia Jade is my "black face tri" I had a hard time coming up with a name for her. She came to us with the name Sparkles. She has such beautiful chocolate eyes and beautiful straight black hair that the name Asia just kept popping up. Jade because i just liked it: Asia Jade
Pearl our cat is all white, so white like a Pearl..we had also adopted a black cat with Pearl and her name was Onyx.
Izzie (Isabella) is named after one of our sheepdogs we had growing up. His name was Izzy (Isadore).
Chewie had the puppy name of Coach, but it wasn't a name I could spit out of my mouth very well. Dog names for me need to be 2 syllables and be able to fly out of my mouth and and project well for all the sports we do here.
Most of my other family members are sci-fi fans, so when we knew his dad's call name was Luke - with a registered name of Shaggy Bear's Skywalker....well, he HAD to be Chewie! I looked it up online as well, and the definition came back as "shaggy, loyal warrior" - so that was enough for me. 8) It shortens handily to "Chew", and really gets his attention.

Image

Simon - the basset came with his name, and it totally suits him. And when you adopt a 6 year old basset who comes when you call his name, you DON'T mess with success!
Image

Image

Harley - the forever foster basset who came at age 11 to our house - while I really don't like the name and it doesn't suit him, we never changed it. After 11 years, he was keeping it! He'll be 13 in 2 months.

Image

Riley - the large rat terrier, we got as a pup and Todd named him. It totally suits him, and his registered name is in part "The Life of Riley" - and that's him :D

Image

Maggie - bluetick rescue had been Maggie, my friend who rescued her changed it to Maddie - Todd changed it back to Maggie because he liked it better. I personally like it, as I call her Magdalene 8) 8)

Image

Biscuit - black lab who we got as a pup. It suits him well, as he's a dorky boy...lol The only name better would have been Bacon, as he's solid like a good hog. :cow: He is definitely the Biscuit boy...oh, and Todd named him as well.
Image
Image

Tipup the cat - Todd and Travis named him that, because he's mostly white with a black plume of a tail - and it looks like a tipup flag (ice fishing)

Image

Teddy the pony - he's a rescue and his name was Buck :( So bad. He's the sweetest pony!! Bre renamed him Teddy or the Tedster. Fits him much better!

Butch means nothing altho the name means manly...... not the slang either, we mostly call him Butchy baby and Tripper is Tripper because when he was a puppy his ears were so long, he tripped over them and we tripped over him. It fit him and it stuck and sometimes he comes to that name when called, sometimes not.

Our last sheepie I had named Farley because I loved the comic strip For Better or Worse, lost him way too soon.
PEARL.............

Originally, her name was Jordan, which I loved, but Dino wanted Pearl..She is the perfect 'friend'. Pearl's are sweet, kind easy going, lovable..and she is..........................

Image

COSMO!!!!!!

I begged and pleaded...cried and carried on for this one! MY DWI dog!!!!! :P :P I named him after my favorite cocktail (a cosmopolitian)...I quit smoking to get him (the deal cincher with Dino)..And although he is the weirdest, strangest, quirkiest dog I have ever had...He is the most endearing.........

http://photos.oes.org/albums/userpics/1 ... %20226.avi

HEART :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: ...

when she was born, she had a heart shape on her backside, so the breeder, Ali, named her...I kept it, but when Dino saw her, he said..""NO....no.... she is not a heart...she is a JELLEY!!!

So she has 2 names....Heart and Jelly...OR................JELLYHEART!!!!!!

Rastus because my Gran called naughty boys Rastus and we'd owned a dalmo before and new he would be. It turned out his breeders first dalmo was also Rastus. We often call Rastus, Rastie or Ratty. Like Dawn I prefer two syllables and I like an ee sound on the end, so Ratty, Tiggy and Rowdy (cat)

Tiggy because I like it. There is a Beatrix Potter character called Mrs Tiggy Winkle she's a hedgehog. It didn't occur to me when I named Tiggy that the game I call chasey is also called tiggy. Serves me right, Tiggy is a mad chaser. 8O There is also Tigger who likes to bounce and Tiggy fits that bill too. She often gets "the Tigster" or Tiggy wig.

I'll add my cat. I called him Danzi after a character in a book I read. It lasted about a week and he became Rowdy. Because he is! He knows exactly the point in the corridor with maximum resonant effect and sits on it and yowls. This means its breakfast time. Lisaoes's son and his girlfriend pet sat for us a couple of months ago. They had two things to say, 1. Tiggy is just like Babs. 2. Now we know why his name is Rowdy!
Okay lets start with Inchhigh, our miniature schnauzer. Named after Inchhigh Private Eye, kids cartoon. Samoen (Mony) named after our two prior dogs who passed, Sam and Moe. And Laci, who was the last in her litter to get adopted, Full name is Last But Not Least Laci.

OK! 8O

Stefany is our Llama (and pregnant!)
She came with the name and it suits her. My girls were having this insane fit when Todd and I were driving to Iowa to get her - they thought Stefany was "too 80's" and wanted to rename her...we were texting for miles and miles, arguing!

But I won, she stayed Stefany

Image
First sheepie because he had in his Pedigree name "Lord Motague" so we called him "Monty"

Next was a sassy sweet girl sheepie and the kids named her peppa. After Salt and Pepper" because of her colouring.

Next the kids wanted to name Kelsey "Salt" so we had a "Salt and Pepper" LOL. I named her after her grandfather who was "Ned Kelly" so it was sort of a feminine version. She often got Kel for short and when naughty "Kelsey"

Brie came from a kennel with french names and I like the French cheese "Brie" (Pronounced Bree) so hence her name, all soft and gooey and creamy. In her pedigree name is "Brigette Bardot" so her short name we call her BB.

Her kids keeping the tradition there going, Babette or babs for short, Syd was going to be "Marcell" but just after the litter was born and we under hubbys insistance we keep one with Dingle Dangles, his uncle passed away so "Syd" he was named after and his second name is "Francis" after "Ol Blue eyes himself" frank sinatra.

His pedigree name is still french after his mommas lines "Petit Fours" and Babs is "Silver Fleur" Babettes sister while here we called "Giselle" and the daddy of her loved it and kept it. Named after a french ballet.
I got baby books with English names, looked through them, made a list, and then we picked DUNCUN (or some such spelling).
We wanted a name that had two syllables and was not common.

Driving home from the breeders with DUNCUN we decided that it sounded to much like Dunkin Donuts and we really liked Edgar.
That name was also on our list. So our little boy became Edgar.

Image

For Aggie we wanted an old fashioned sounding name to go with Edgar's.

Image

When someone dumped a kitten on our property we ended up naming HER Jack. Jack has one bad eye and walks with a limp.
Everyone knows pirates have an eye patch so it seemed natural. She is such a sweet cat and seems like a dog so I had to
include her. :)

We love Mulligan's name. We were lucky enough to find Mulligan through New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue. The name he came with was Mulligan.

In the sport of golf a "Mulligan" is a do-over or a second chance.

Perfect.
Great topic-

Baley is named for my Dad. My Dad was one of my best friends--He suffered from heart problems from the age of 48 and ultimately had a heart transplant at 64 and lived 5 more years. He was truly my hero for so many reasons. My maiden name was Bales and many of my Dad's friends called him Baley at times.
Baley was born on his Birthday Nov. 3--when I was thinking about names I decided that it was just a great fit--and I knew my Dad would be 'honored' to have a sheepie named for him. All animals loved my father--even the cows followed him around the farm. He adored our first sheepie Duffy that we purchased when we were too poor to eat :D :D --but just had to have him. Daddy supplemented our groceries so we could pay off the dog! :hearts: :hearts:
So that is how Baley got his name!

Baxter
Image

When we purchased our first sheepie--back in the 70's the breeder kept one of the pups from that litter and named him Baxter--or that was his call name, I am not sure of the registered name. That Baxter was a true 'clown' a really happy fun loving dog. I kept up with Baxter for many years because he was Duffy's brother and I always thought his name fit him perfectly. When our Baxter came to our home he reminded me of the other Baxter. We originally had decided to name him Sherman--but after he was here a few days--I knew that Baxter was it! So we have Baley and Baxter! :hearts: :hearts:
How great to love your father so much that you named your sheepie after him. He sounded like a wonderful man.
My first sheepie I named Charly Lou. My dad always called me Charly (guess he wanted a boy, my sister was nicknamed George so I feel I got off lucky) Any way, I named her Charly because it was a special name to me. Lou just sort of fit with it.

Our Great Dane was named Duchess Marie, my daughter was big on The Aristocats at that time and it fit her.
Border Collie was a stray that someone dumped at my husbands work and he brought him home and said he had a "new little buddy" so thats how it got his name.
Cat was a stray that adopted us. He had these big cheeks (vet was even shocked) We name him Jamie Langenbrunner after the hockey player because he has strong jaw bones too.

all those are waiting at the bridge.

now we have yellow lab named Dallas Star after the hockey team (yes I am a big hockey fan)
chocolate lab name Mocha Latte - kids named for obvious reasons - I wanted to name her Texas Ranger but they said that was a boy name. :( I do get to call her Mighty Mo (which is for my favorite hockey player Mike Modano  )
and our sheepie Ryleigh Bella- my oldest daughter came up with it. and it works for her. her name when we got her was KayDee which she NEVER responded to, not surprised when she was left in the back yard. Didnt take her long to learn Ryleigh and it fits nice. :clappurple:

this all 3 of them playing in our first snow in Texas this year.
my first was Maggie for short, my mom wanted an OES and on the way home she started thinking of english names for her... Marget Thatcher was what we named her, Maggie for short.

The two we have now...
Haley - Our Charming Miss Haley is her full name, the name she came with was Duck Tail, because of her markings - some times i still call her that. I dont know where my mom came up with that one.
Spencer - Spencer Prince of the woods (cause we live in the woods), again not sure, the name on the breeder papers is Eye Patch, cause well he has an eye patch, so i like to call him the pirate! hahahaha
our none OES - TyChi - "The Ultimate" is what it means in chinese, spelled differently... but my boyfriend does Tae Chi and when we picked him up he had the yin yang sign in his neck with the brown and white.... so he is now TyChi
First sheepie...BRANDON was named after a soap opera character...
Image

But, there's also a Brandon in Manitoba and people kept asking if he was named after the place. We lost him to cancer at a young age.

Our next two were named to honour him, and we used Manitoba place names as first names...and we decided on scientist middle names, so we ended up with:

Image
Portage Pavlov (who, interestingly enough, drooled a LOT when you held up a treat)...named after Portage La Prairie, also a small town in MB.

and

Image

ThePas Darwin (a very evolved sheepie)... The Pas (pronounced The Paw) is in Northern MB, but there was an incident with a very loud mouthed good ole Texas feller who could NOT pronounce it that way, and my hubby came home laughing about how he kept saying it ThePas (rhymes with Keepus)...so that stuck.

Next came Evil Puppy, also known as:
Image

Hudson Galileo...Technically there's a Hudson Island in northern MB...it's not an actual town. He was so badly behaved as a puppy that he spent a great deal of his first year in his crate, pen, etc...much like the house arrest that Galileo himself endured.

And finally, Rudy was named by the lady at the OES Rescue of Florida. She says she saw a movie about someone named Rudy who just wanted a chance to play football (I think). She took such good care of him, and moved mountains for us, so we wanted to keep the name. It took some wrangling, but it turns out that in the wild, frozen north of Manitoba there is a small area named Ruddock...apparently it is home to some caribou and trees...and it's classified as an "unorganized area." It's a squeaker...but that gives us:

Image

Ruddock Einstein (Rudy for short). The Einstein part has not yet kicked in...but we choose to remain optimistic.
traciels28 wrote:

I don't know about that Tracie. I think Rudy has a handle on Einstein's special relativity theories, especially the highlighted portion. :D

Special relativity (SR, also known as the special theory of relativity or STR) is the physical theory of measurement in inertial frames of reference proposed in 1905 by Albert Einstein (after the considerable and independent contributions of Hendrik Lorentz, Henri Poincaré and others) in the paper "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies".[1] It generalizes Galileo's principle of relativity—that all uniform motion is relative, and that there is no absolute and well-defined state of rest (no privileged reference frames)—from mechanics to all the laws of physics, including both the laws of mechanics and of electrodynamics, whatever they may be.
Image
Merlin was originally called Cartman by his breeder which actually suits him better than Merlin. However, at the time I didn't watch SouthPark and I wanted a magic name as originally Merlin was going to appear on stage with me.

Panda was originally called Robin. I changed his name to Panda to honor his Chinese heritage (he was born in Hong Kong) and he also resembles a Panda with his eye patches.

Snoop dog...ummm what can I say my son named him ..although i dropped the 'dog" and call him Snoop.

Image

Gilligan...what can I say? I always wanted a dog named Gilligan. Quite catchy with Marianne and makes people chuckle when I introduce us. :D

HA!!!!! I don't think I ever made that connection!!!

Skiippppperrrrrrrrrr!
My oldest lass is almost 12 now and called Maggie. I got her from a couple in England and she was 2 years old. Her real name is Jess but the familys grandson nick named all their dogs from Scobbiedoo. Yep you guessed it I bought Shaggy. WELL......no way was I walking in the Park shouting Shaggy  she refused to answer to Jess, soooo I went through the Alpabet till we reached Maggie...her ears seemed to twitch every time I said it....So Maggie she became. :yay:
Our dogs are all music themed..

Walter- named after the guitarist of one of my favorite bands.
Marley- Dave named her after Bob Marley (she is *pre* move/book!)
Rudie- His full name is "Rude Dog" which is a play on "Rude boy", from the jamaican reggae scene. There are lots of reggae/ska songs that reference "rudie".
Mattie came with her name when we adopted her. From her old vet records it has always been her name.

I'm not very creative, Frankie is for Frankie Sinatra Ol blue eyes. We tried Newman out for Paul Newman we even said it like they did on Seinfeld. It just didn't fit. He definately was a Frankie.

Buzzy the cat also came with his name. I'd like to think it came from Toy story ( buzz light year)

Lisa Frankie and Mattie
Summers kennel name is Daisy proclaimer girl. But we didnt have a Summer to talk about that year so we called her Summer. Yorkies name is Chantilly Lace, just because I liked it, called Tilly for short. Guinea Pig is called Gilbert the Guinea Pig as he is very posh looking. 30 year old tortoise is called Kermit, kids were made on muppets, (tis a girl but never mind) :aww:
Our first OES was Merlin. I have always loved the legends of Merlin and the breeder told me his color was blue merle, so it seemed a natural choice. When we got Archie, we have him the formal name of Archimedes, Merlin's owl/familiar. Archie is what suited him, though as well as being easier to say. My husband named Sherman and somehow, that fits him. Sophie was settled on as a compromise--not sure who proposed it first, but I like the alliteration for the litter mates. I also like names that end in 'y' or 'ie' because they make you smile when you say them. Try it: you'll see what I mean. Your lips naturally make a smiling shape on the last syllable. This is a good thing, I think
I had always wanted an OES with a pompous old English name. I loved the name Chauncey, but also thought of character's in the Dicken's classic's....I also liked Paddington ( Paddy ), which will probably be our next OES.
I'm sure I'm not remembering all the dogs but:

Initially our dogs' names were tied to their breed "region": Maudie, Crumpet the OES, Basil the StB, Sonya the Siberian, Clancy the Irish Wolf.

Then came the move screams: Abbott, Shane (come back Shane) and of course Stella............

Rescues kept their name if they arrived with one: Oliva and Splash (Splash for a opposite color splash on her chest though her loose bladder just reinforced the name), MO was Simone and I couldn't do a french name for an OES so she remains just plain MO. Glacier was and remains Glacier. Paige was breeder named Society Paige for her gregarious nature.

Other misc names: Fox for his fox-like face. Harry was named by a young girl at the shelter after her mother said she could not adopt the dog......so I asked her to name him for me. Jack is the only one I've named in awhile.......as I was leading him out of the shelter he jumped straight up and pushed open the door. I thought, "This guy jumps like a Jack in the Box." Chad for the hanging chad election.
Bingley's name is from Pride and Prejudice. We wanted a name that went with the "Old English" - from the English countryside if possible. Mr. Bingley from Pride and Prejudice fit the bill precisely. We really wanted to go Mr. Darcy but figured in this day and age it sounded too girly!
We named our Standard Poodle Ned because my husband is English and I loved the name. His registered name is Prince Charming and we briefly considered Charm. Next came our rescue sheltie who came with the name Walker but soon was called Jamie in honour of my husband's father who is from Glasgow Scotland and we thought it went well with Ned. Lastly, our havanese who is called Slippers , not only because she has 4 white paws but also because she chewed numerous pairs of slippers in the first months we had her. Very comical to see a 3 lb puppy carrying my husbands huge slipper in her mouth and dragging it around the house every chance she got .

Previously we had a brown cocker named Teak and a golden retriever named Suede .
I named my oes Tedi because his breeder's children had named the puppies and his name was Teppo. Teppo is an old man's name in Finland so I wanted to change it a little bit and then it was Tedi. Tedi is pronounced like Teddy and it describes him perfectly. He is fluffy and adorable and looks like a teddy bear :) His registered name is Royal Grey's Big Shot but I don't think that describes him so well.. He's so down to earth and not really bossy but we'll see what comes out of him :D

My late bichon frisé we named Jasu. He was the most playful and smallest pup and his registered name was Raum Boy's Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown is Jaska Jokunen in Finnish so Jasu is shorter from Jaska. And that he was :)
My first oes ,my parents dog really as i was only 1, was called shep .He was called shep because he was from the famous Tilley Shepton Mallet kennels and my parents weren't to inventive with names  Shep went blind at 6 months old :(

Then I went onto rescues and they all came with names Duke,Cass and Toby .

My first pup was Mitch and i wanted to go with the theme of Bob Tail so Mitch was Robert Mitchum ,Bob Mitchum . :)

Then another rescue came and he was Bob Dylan.

Now I have Bob Marley. Then I run out of Bobs

So i picked Kenley as a name because it's an old English boys name meaning from the kings meadow and i thought it was a good name for a sheepie :)
WOW...excellent post

A lot of ours came with names so I will skip over those

Kismet was my first deaf sheepie when I was looking for a girl
Kismet means fate or destiny and she was mine..

Donaghey(aka Donner) is Celtic for Strong fighter and he needed a strong name since
he was so sick coming into rescue.

Monty..he looked like he had a monkey butt so somehow Monty came out of that :?

Duibhin is Celtic for "Little Black one" and his markings were so dark

Raigin Celtic for "Little King" and it was just cute!
(the two are brothers)

Pooh...somebody said he looked like a poodle so we called him "Poo" added the "H" for obvious reasons

Devyn...I forgot what that means but, I assume devil these days

Pancake...RON picked that one if he remembers that

Georgie Peaches as she came from Georgia the "Peach State"

Finnegan O' Grady to name him after our second OES father, his name was Grady and we wanted it to also
rhyme with Quin(who was named when we got him too)

I could list more from even farther back but, I will stop there!
Fun walk down memory lane!
Our first sheepie was named Lucy Blue. Her name Lucy was from the little girl in the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe since we loved the movie/book as kids and the kids have a british accent. I have a paw stamp and a sheepie stamp that I would sign cards with using the blue ink. I wanted to continue in this tradition so I knew I needed a color for the middle name for our new little girl. This brought me to the middle name of Rose so I could use a pink stamp.
Then, I really liked flower names and I went through and thought of different flowers. I came up with Dahlia. When I looked up the meaning of Dahlia, it means "Dweller of the valley." We live in Round Valley. Dahlia's are also one of the most unique flowers in the world with more variations then any other flower. Since Dahlia's markings are so unique, we knew that the name was perfect since no 2 sheepies are alike! To top if off, the breeder had named her "Rose" and when the breeder died, his sister took over to get the puppy to us, and her middle name is Rose.

It all just came together so well! So, she actually has 2 flower names!

So, on Christmas Eve, 2010, Dahlia Rose was born!

Now, of course, I bought a ton of Dahlia bulbs and have planted them this season in "her" garden!
Hang on, this is a big list!

Our dogs
Sean. This was our Cocker of 10+ years. When Jen and I decided to get married, we both wanted a dog. I wanted a sheepie but couldn’t find one. I told Jen that we had to have either a sheepie or a Cocker. Sean came available through the Vet that Jen used from her family’s pets so we adopted him. We adopted him at 2 years old and he was already good with Sean.

Bentley. We adopted him, our first sheepie at 4 ½ years old and he already knew Bentley well. His history is on my own website on The Dogs Page, (see signature below).

Zoey. When we adopted Zoey, our second sheepie, she was only 4 months old so she didn’t know her first name yet. When we picked out Zoey's name, it was the only one on the short list from the first Google search that we both liked with no hesitation. Her history is also on my own website on The Dogs Page, (see signature below).

Our cats
Max. He was a Blue Russian Siamese mix. Jen named him Maximilian and we simply called him Max. Shortly after reaching adult, he began to put on some weight. This wasn’t as bad as he was TAAAAAALLLLL and leggy. At his max, he tipped the scales at 23 pounds, fulfilling his namesake. I did start calling him Lunchbox after that big 23 was hit.

Scheisse. Since I was a kid, we’ve always had a pet named this. It all started when we had an Irish Setter puppy for several days without a name. My Mom realized that we, the three kids hadn’t picked a name, she sat us all in the kitchen and said we were allowed to leave until we picked a name for the little sh!t. My older sis was taking her fourth year of German in HS and they were learning slang at this point. Jan must have decided she had better things to do as after only a minute or so, she jumped up and said Cline Scheisse and walked out. My Mom asked her what that meant and Jan said it was German for little sh!t. It stuck. Only in a year or so, we had to change her name to Grosse Scheisse, big sh!t.

Keowee. He was a stray that a co-worker found on a main thoroughfare’s bridge, literally sitting between the yellow stripes in the middle. We named him after the bridge where he was picked up, Keowee Street.

Skizzie or Skitzo. A farm cat we got as a kitten that my son named. Don’t ask, I don’t know.

Reecie. She is an orange and brown tortoise shell colored cat that reminded Jen of a bowl of Reece’s Pieces.

Mousey Tongue. Mou, as we call her is a litter mate of Reecie. She looks like a Siamese in every way. I wanted to have fun with a name so I named her after the Chinese Emperor, Mao Tse-tung. Maybe not the best for historical record, but still, a fun name.

Attila and Othello. These were two kittens that I spotted coming into the local shelter as I was walking out. The shelter had a bad reputation for ‘disposing’ of animals quickly if they had no room. I could see that they had WAY too many kittens then so on my way out, I talked the couple bringing them in to let me take them home due to their future at the shelter. Attila was named after a Mike Peters cartoon character and Othello was just another period name that sounded cool.

Malakai and Mookie. These were two kittens a neighbor told me about at a farm where the owner wasn’t caring for the animals, so we rescued the ones we could find. Jen named Malakai. She just liked the name. I named Mookie. I love surf music and wanted to name him after a famous surf guitarist named Nokie Edwards, but I kept coming back to Mookie so it stuck.

Anastasia and Natasha. These are the only cats we’ve paid for. I got these as a Christmas gift to Jen. Three days before Christmas in 2009, Skizzie got hit by a car and Jen was crushed. This was the only cat she lied to me about to bring home. He had a GREAT personality and would give head-butts on command. I found a Persian breeder locally and we went to look at them a day before Christmas. She fell in love and I insisted on buying two as I hate bringing kittens in without a playmate their own age. Jen named both, using a Persian/Russian theme.

Unfortunatly, Max, Keowee, Skizzie and Othello are no longer with us. We put Max down at the age of 10. Keowee and Othello stopped coming home and I already talked about Skizzie.

As you can see, we have a hard time saying no to someone in need...

Annastacia is a wonderful name Vance. Jen has wonderful taste!

Previous Dogs
Endo, (End over end) She was my first dog. Rott/shep/lab mix. I didn't name her, she came with that name but boy did she live up to it...She has a really really special place in my heart. Not just because she was my first dog, she was a rescue, starved, abused, and hated everyone but me til the moment she died. She was crazy and mean but she loved me and I loved her. RIP

Juno- husky/pom mix. My fiance and I's first dog together. We looked on line for sled dog names and that one fit her. RIP

Current Dogs
Gideon- Hound mix. He came with that name.

Ritz- wolf hybrid. My fiance named him, he always wanted a dog named Ritz. I didn't want to name him that but it was the only thing that pup would come too. Ugh! lol

(Warning: Sad story)
Lily- OES. She probably has the most in depth name. Endo had just died and my step mom came over and brought me lilies to plant in my garden for her, so I would always have a beatiful reminder of her. A little while later she called and asked me if I was missing having a girl and if I would want anouther dog. It took me a little while to answer but it was yes, of course I miss having anouther girl in the house. She gave me my OES pup and when she asked me what I was going to name her, since my step mom gave her to me I couldn't think of any other name but Lily. So no matter what I will always have a Lily for my Endo.
When naming our new puppy, we wanted an English name to fit the breed. We decided on Millie-- it means "mild strength" and the name really suits her personality.
Which brings me to an interesting thought. How did we know so soon that this name would fit, or how did she become "Millie(mild strength)"?
Sunny came to us at a particularly difficult time. We had suffered a loss with our first pregnancy the year before, and for reasons I won't get into here, suffered a lot at the hands of a chaotic medical system and some terrible techs/nurses that delayed my physical recovery for about 7 extra months, therefore making it difficult to emotionally recover as well. After that time, when he thought that we were emotionally healthy enough, my husband said one day "let's get a dog"- something I've been begging him to agree to for years! We did all the research, talked to owners and made the decision to get an OES, contacted the few breeders in our province and then were ecstatic to find out that we were expecting again. Shortly after though, we lost the baby and were once again devastated. But we decided that we were alright to go ahead with bringing a puppy into our lives. So a few weeks later we brought a bundle of joyful black and white fur home. We struggled with a name for days, until one night I looked at her playing on the floor infront of us, and said to my husband "she's such a ray of sunshine. She's just a sunny patch in our lives right now". And we just knew it as soon as it came out of my mouth, that her name was Sunny, short for Sunshine, because that's what she brought into our lives at an otherwise very dark time. And the name has been nothing short of the perfect description to her disposition, her personality and the love and joy that she brings to us. We were delighted to find out that we were expecting again when Sunny was only 4 months old, and she's been a perfect big sister to our daughter who was born just 2 days after Sunny's 1st birthday! Sunny always gets a shared birthday party with all her extended relatives now :bdcake: And of course a party hat that she promptly bats off her head each year!!
We get a lot of people asking us why we named a female dog "Sonny" and have to explain that it's like the weather, "Sunny, with a chance of crazy" :excited: But's that's ok, we love her name and what it means to us.
Many of you know the story behind Brick's name but I'll repeat it, cuz I like to. :)

When my ex told me she wanted to get a dog, she said she wanted an Airedale.
I asked her if that was the dog with the brick-shaped head. She said yes. I knew NOTHING about them except that.

I was hesitant to get a dog. I had just done a lot of refinishing of my house and I didn't want everything torn up, but she was relentless.
I decided to keep an open mind. Of course she kept sending me cute pics of Airedales. Then she took me to a breeder near Utica and we pulled in there was the most adorable dog peering out around the corner of one of the barns. I was only use to seeing 'dales in show trim so to see one in a casual trim was a treat (Ithink they look better out of their show trim).

So from that point on, I guess we were getting a 'dale.

She would show me pics and tell me about which breeders had pups ready, etc.
I would do my best to find songs with the word "brick" in it because I thought it was funny.

Well, we finally got the pup and boy was he a character. When the breeder put the pups in the grassy area in front of us, this one pup chased all the others away. He kept all the others away from us while he stayed close to us, almost as if he chose us. We figured he chose us, how can we say no. So we took the crazy one.
All the way home from Memphis, TN to Syracuse, we threw names back and forth at each other, with each of us saying no to the others suggestion (kind of like Elaine from Seinfeld and her boyfriend trying to find a new name for him because his name was Joel Rifkin, just like the serial killer). I can't remember any that she threw out, but I remember suggesting Dale (pretty obvious) and Guiness (cuz 'dales are black & tan).
We made it home without a name. As a matter of fact, I don't remember him having a name for the first couple of days.

Finally my ex said, I want to name him Brick. I was like, "Brick? Realy? What kind of stupid name is that? Who names their dog Brick?"
But she insisted and his name became Brick.

It became obvious over a short period of time that Brick was the perfect name for this dog. He proved to be stubborn, thick-headed, and rarely listened. It seemed like any attempts at behavior correction went in one ear & out the other.
Later, as he grew and filled in, I had never laid my hands on a dog that was so muscular but still compact. When he would stand on hind legs looking out the door, he had an extreme V-shape to his body, like a human body builder. He was (and is) built like the proverbial brick s***house!
And he really did end up developing a nice brick shaped Airedale head to boot. :-)

So looking back, I could not imagine a more perfect name for this dog. A lot of folks that have contact with him tell me Brick is the perfect name for this dog.
I could not agree more. :D
The breeder already named the litter, she called bloo blue (as in blue ribbon as hes show quality markings.)
The name just stuck, so i just called him BLOO instead because i have always imagined i had a do friend.( id never owned a dog) so i named him after bloo on fosters home for imaginary friend, becasue he is my best friend that used to be my imagination. Also it was my favourite programme at one time when i was 10 lol :P

Sounds silly most people dont understand!! I normally just say because hes got a blue eye, as its too complicated to say all the above :)
But thats how BLOO came along ( besides saying bloo loo lol )like the bloo toilet cleaners)) :roses:
Pooh Bear got his name from......Winnie the Pooh. I got hooked on Winnie the Pooh because of new grandchildren. My son and daughter in law surprised me with an OES (wanted one ever since I was little). They walked in the door with this 8 week old puppy, I took one look at him and through the tears said he's a Pooh Bear.
Angus is a year old owner surrender that has kept his name. He looks like an Angus and responds well to it (when he wants to!)
We put a name in a hat. Myself- wife & daughter kept on fighting for a name so we had to draw from a hat & the wife one. I wanted a pirate name

I wish I knew that there were sheepies in Austria! We were there on holiday and we kept looking for sheepies but didn't see any-many little dogs but maybe that is because we were mostly in Vienna and big cities have little dogs?
Hi!
In Vienna are two breeders:Barking Bobbys and Enchant. But I live in the very south of Austria.May be you visit us next time?

The farthest south we went was to Raiding, to see the birthplace of Franz Liszt. It was so very very beautiful around there, I would happily visit again. We rented a car and drove on the country roads, it was a magical place!
What a lovely thread and what wonderful names - some have made me smile as I've read the description of why this name was chosen.

Well here are mine:

Duke - named after John Wayne - Mothers choice
Sebastian - he was rescued and came to us at just under 3 years of age, so we kept the name and called him Sebby or Sebbie-kings for short. His kennel name was E Noble King
Cubbie-Roo - named because Cubbie was a small basket and a very Old English name
Reba - named after the singer
Chester - I just thought the name suited him and I didnt want anything that anyone else had in the show ring - a friend did suggest Eddie but I just didnt like it
Jade - she was originally JD - we rescued her and she had such an awful life before she came to us
Tia - because of her markings, some of my frinds think its because I love Tia Maria and coke
Lincoln - We wanted to follow the theme of English town names and Lincoln also has huge connections with the mystical way of life - which is something I follow. So Lincoln it is - a dear friend calls him Sir Lincoln
Esher - again we wanted to follow the theme of English towns - so we sat with two altases looking at the towns/countys that sounded girly and shouting them out. Result is Esher!

The cat is Tibby-Toos - shes a rescue and I had no idea whether she was a girl or a boy - she looked too pretty to be a boy, but decided on Tibby as it went for either.

Mel you forget to mention that you named Cloud as well (or Lord Cloud as he likes to be known) :)

It just suits him so well.

Celyn who we had before was from Wales. Celyn is welsh for Holly and as she was born at Christmas it just seemed right.

This is a great thread :clappurple: :clappurple:

Debs, I pondered whether to mention Cloud or not. Cloud is so named because his marking on his shawl looked like a cloud and he was born on full moon - so it seemed to fit. Lord Cloud suits him well!

I love Celyn's name.
:wag:
And today on the Isle of Man we have Hurricane Force Winds so he is a 'Cloud blowing in the Wind'

He loves it :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

My Labradoodle is named Layla. Wanted to call her Lila, but Layla rolled together better, and called her puppy for 3 weeks because I couldn't think of a name I liked. It fits her, she's a princess, very girly and sweet, it just fits her.

Image

Our sheepie that we just got, we were debating between Howie and Ramsey. Howie I always said I'd name a male dog, but the night we got him home, he was bumping into everything all excited so Ramsey just fit. Also found out it's English so that's even more appropriate!!

Having some hugs.

Love the photos and Howie's/Ramsey's markings. I just love black front paws - dont ask me why as I havent a clue. Let us know what you decide. I personally prefer Ramsey - its got that authority behind the name especially when yelling in the park.

btw when you are holding him dont hold him so that his front paws are stretched away from his chest as you are making his chest loose as everything is stretching.

Cant wait to hear what you decide to call him. I like the name Layla as well and it really does suit her - love her nose, its a very kissable one!!
Well Georgi was Lori's idea. We spent about 8 weeks fighting over a name. So Cleo put her name in the Hat & Lori also myself and Lori won.

Sherwood was named after Sherwood Forest & Lori was born in Sherwood also the breeder was a Mrs Sherwood so it seem to fit.

Thank you! Yeah, he reminds me of a tux, I didn't know that about the holding, but that was just for a picture, normally don't, but definitely noted! Ramsey it has stuck, as he still rams things and now he likes to ram into things to check them out, haha. And Layla's nose is very kissable, if you don't kiss it, she will make you, hahaa.
Let's see...

Our cats:

Edward is actually not named after sparkley vampires, but rather because we needed a posh sounding name for him. He's a snowshoe siamese, and is very stuck up. He was also quite tall before he turned into something that more resembles a butterball turkey, so we named him "Edward Longshanks".

Saatchi is our new cat, she's a dainty little thing. Her name from the shelter was "Versace" which I hated, but the girls wanted to keep. Gag. I shortened it to Saatchi after an advertising firm that I much admired during my fledgling graphic designer days.

Zilla, or Catzilla is named such because frankly, he's a Maine Coone, and weighed in at 20+ pounds when we rescued him from a tiny little kennel at the shelter. He came with the name Tai Lang, which again, I loathed. We couldn't figure out anything else, and we kept saying he was the godzilla of cats. So Zilla stuck.

The ferrets:

Seamus - We fought over a name for him for eons. Nothing fit. Until one day I said "what about Seamus" and everyone agreed. It's just... who he is.

Jack - My husband is a huge Jack Skellington fan, and our ferret is white, ornery, and has a great misunderstanding for all things not ferret.

The puppy? We were going to go with Amelia, but that has now been vetoed. It's looking like it could be Ava, but we won't know until we spend more time with her!

The BEST pet name (in my humble opinion) that we have had was a guinea pig named Elvis Parsley. Sadly, he died before his time, as all guinea pigs have in our house. We've given up on them as pets.

Ramsey - brilliant it so suits him and shall look forward to seeing him grow with Layla. You are welcome for the tip alot of people dont realise that holding puppies with their paws apart isnt good.
