Is it OK to feed dogs people meat?

Ok so last night I made hamburgers for dinner. They are very lean, from the butcher shop. I had 2 left over and thought it would be a treat for the pups if I gave them some in there food. Then I got to wondering is this OK to do? I also have leftover pork, is that ok for pups to eat? No bones or anything like that? :lmt:
Thanks Traci

Gastronomically it's probably fine, but "table scraps" don't meet a dog's nutritional needs and can lead to weight gain and can also lead to some bad habits.

That said, a liiiiitle goes a long long way when using bits for training.
found this note by the phone table when i got home, looks like it was written by the dogs;

hehe, I wouldn't actually call them table scraps but I understand. Oliver is over one and I think I have only done this like twice because I new nobody would eat them as leftovers. I figure  d that it would be a nice little treat.
It's fine, but realize you have to cut back on their other food to keep the calorie count correct. Indulgences once in awhile are fine, bowels permitting. Some dogs rebel with a rear end problems.

Some people will feed only human grade food to their dogs, but they research what exactly a dog needs and it's not just meat.

Around here the dogs don't share their food with us, but fully expect us to share with them.
Oscar doesn't get any table scraps whatsoever, due to medical issues (autoimmune IBD). Our first sheepdog shared every single meal I ever ate, unless it was something harmful to dogs like grapes, raisins, onions, etc, or something high in fat that could cause pancreatitis. (Two bites for me, one for Quincy.) :D Quincy was in a down-stay next to me at every meal (such a hardship!), so he never bothered anyone else for food. I also never added anything to his dog food, so he never expected to see anything else in his bowl except his kibble - which he wolfed down at every meal.

However, if you are going to share once, don't be surprised when they start to ask for more. Dogs are opportunists, especially when it comes to access to food. If you give it once, they will look for it. Also, they might decide that kibble without "enhancements" is no longer going to cut it, and then you are stuck putting stuff in their dog food, or they won't eat it. (I've known people who started adding a little cheese or gravy, and then the dog wouldn't touch their food without it.)

To me, if the dog's digestive system can handle it, it really becomes more of a behavioral issue. Do you want the possibility of a dog begging, or requiring people food to eat his own kibble?

I'm so glad you meant table scraps and not actual "people meat".
I was thinking you had a new twist on getting rid of the bodies....

It's fine as long as it is not too fatty. Otherwise you run the risk of "Pancreatitis" (sp)

Mine get treats of table scraps all the time, "Roast Lamb" is a riot here between all three and I must say there ultimate spoil.

As long as no cooked bones in it or too much fat cant do any harm.

Mine had "Kangaroo" and loved it, I am sure it made them after "Jump" higher" 8)  They have also tried fish, venison, sausages (Not too fatty), bbq'ed meats and even licking the BBQ hot plate the next day, roast chook is up the top with one taking a whole roast chicken off the bench, bones and all, that was cooling for summer salad!!!turned out to be just vegetarian for us uprights that night after the chook went missing. You would think my dogs dont get enough to eat :lmt: and I was not impressed with a black greasy beard the next day after the licky lick session on the BBQ hot plate, we have learned since BBQ'ing to clean the BBQ before sheepies go out to play.

Look at left over vegies too, they love that as well, nothing with oinions in it or nothing too spicey but all in all table scraps are good and something different for them.

Mim lost her fillet steak to one cunning sheepie girl recently and no problems with madames expensive tastes, just one upset momma missing out of a yummy steak dinner. 8)
Maybe Aussie sheepies are mainly meat and veggie guys, but up in this house fruits rate high. Bananas are to die for or at least eat with reserve good manners. Jack fills out the other fruit bowl, avoiding only lemons. He swoons over melons of any type, oranges with apples are super special. He loves margaritas mainly for the lime!

Carbs, yes for all, with only MO backing off as she knows she and wheat don't get along.

Diary, yep. At least none are severely lactose intolerant and in one case, don't put yourself between the yogurt container and Jack.

I think the hardest thing to realize is "a human portion" of a few small pieces doesn't always equal to a dog's...

I have family members that CONSTANTLY talk about how they don't understand why their dog is overweight since they always exercise their dog and barely give him any food (amount vet told them). Then I watch them give table scraps ...pretty much whenever there is food being prepared or eaten. They think I'm wrong. What do I know... their dog is still fat. ;)
My dogs have to steal scraps.
My husband eats all the left overs. 8O
so aussie girls?
say it ain't so!!!!!!!!!!
you eat the roo's???????
:cow:  8O :twitch:
Good one, Mim

At our house, they definitely get people food. BUT - it's in moderation and only what the dog can handle. Right now we have a good bunch - no one's guts revolt in a bad way!

And our being split with now 7 dogs ensures they really don't get that much. Our bunch is pretty lean too, no extra weight except Miss Bunny 8) , and we will be working on that!

Remember - we are aiming for "human grade ingredients" when we BUY dog food..... :lmt:
Marinated roo. Yum, yum!! :D

It's lean and very healthy with more omega 3 fats than beef or lamb. And we eat the cute wooly lambs too. :P

With apologies to any vegetarians.

I am sure if we had roos here we would eat them. They are prob. like our deer is to us. Anyway Dawn you have a good point. About the human grade food. I never feed any bones with it just the meat. I have also found out my pups ( all of them) like apples. Just my little one likes carrots though. Haven't tried anything else. But I do find if weird they like bananas! geez I hate throwing bananas away that are a little on the mush side now I know what to do with them. Traci
