Opinions and Thoughts on Sewing Machines.

Any of you who sew, I'd like your thoughts & ideas on the sewing machines out there nowadays. Years ago I used to make all my own clothes & did alterations for people. My Mom & Dad bought me a White sewing machine as a wedding gift. I wore that one out after several years & Mom traded me hers for mine (she bought the same machine for herself when she bought me mine). I don't do as much sewing anymore (because I work full-time & it's cheaper to buy clothes on sale than to make them!) but I think the main reason is I've worn out this machine too. It's too far gone for an overhaul. I'm looking at buying a new machine. Don't need all the fancy stuff like the embroidery stitches etc. but I'd like it to be heavy duty enough to hem a pair of blue jeans properly & make things like curtains & hem bedspreads etc. And I'd like that invisible overcast stitch for the hems & seams that used to be only available on the commercial machines years ago. I want something that doesn't need repaired all the time. I'm used to a cabinet model but I'd settle for a good solid portable one. I don't know if they even make cabinet models anymore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a brother that I got at Walmart. I am a sewing baby, as I haven't done a whole lot with it, but it seems to work well.
I have had a basic Singer for 20 years. I have sewed every kind of fabric...demin, sheers, and fun fur (borg) with it. I have had it tuned up only a few times over the years. Works great and easy to use.

My mom's sewing machine is a Kenmore (Sears), it has to be over 35 years old, it has more features than mine. It runs great with all fabrics. One thing I don't like is that you need to go to Sears to get extra bobbins, needles and parts.

With the Singer I can find anything I need at most sewing/fabric stores.

You are smart to do research, the machines now are so expensive.

I have an old JC Penny model-- all metal parts, and is like the energizer bunny. Keeps on going. You have me wondering if they even make machines anymore. Prior to this one ( that's about 20 years old) I had a singer. I was 30 years old when I got it ( grandma's hand me down) and it ran for another 10 years... Not much help I know. My experience is old.
I had a Sears Kenmore for YEARS. When it finally was costing more to repair than a replacement, I got a brother. It's OK, and certainly does all the basic sewing I want to do. The one I have is XL-5700. Its a few steps up from the most basic models. And, I have a friend who got the very lowest cost brother and it was crappy - she returned it and got one like mine and never had issues after that.
I use mine for quilting (no time lately though), sewing on fleece, mending, making my agility chute...lol

My client's wife is a more serious sewer and she has a Janome and loves it. I know it was not cheap, but she got it for a pretty good deal, well under the regular price.

Have you found one yet?

No, just starting to look. I need to tie up some loose ends here at home 1st then I can get serious about looking for a new one. So keep the opinions coming. Tried Comumers' Report but Jim can't even find an article on sewing machines in the last several years.
